Strengths and Weaknesses of the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix

Strengths

The main ability of this fruit is that it grants the user the power to transform into a big phoenix enveloped in blue flames, as well as a human-phoenix hybrid, at will. It is to be noted that with Marco’s usage of this power, the Human-Beast form has not been seen yet, instead only part of his arms and legs transform into bird wings and bird legs

As with all the Zoans, the transformation significantly improves the user’s overall physical capabilities, granting them the strength to sufficiently hold back two Ancient Zoan users at once. As a Bird Zoan, the user is also bestowed with the ability to fly quickly. The Phoenix form (both in part and full) comes with a set of sharp talons on the feet, which enables the user to deliver slashing damage via kicks.

Most importantly, the user is able to produce the “Blue Flames of Resurrection”, which is also referred to as, “Flames of Regeneration”. These blue flames automatically envelop the user when they transform, though it is not necessary to transform in order to produce these blue flames. Usually, the flames are more potent than conventional fire, even though they do not burn, spread, or emit heat as normal flames do.

The phoenix flames are extremely healing rather than burning, which allows the user to quickly recover from the wounds they are dealt with. By covering themselves in flames, the user can recover from any injuries including the lethal ones, just as a phoenix is believed to rise from its ashes. As a result, the user possesses incredible resilience, being able to endure severe punishment without even experiencing any discomfort of being slowed down. Marco had little or no reaction to the injuries inflicted on him, even if they were as severe as having one of his wings cut off, or his entire body pierced through gunfire, or even having parts of his head or neck blown off.

When the user is in complete phoenix form, the attacks may simply pass through them as though their body were one intangible flame, similar to a Logia user’s body, with the key difference being that the user just regenerates, maintaining a solid body under the Fire. The user can also heal by summoning flames without transforming into a hybrid or complete phoenix.

In contrast to Logia users, who are permanently damaged by anything that bypasses their elemental physiology, such as Haki or Seastone, the flames can heal even those injuries that are sustained while touching the material once contact with it has ended.

The phoenix flames are very effective in fighting for protection, and when the user uses their own body (especially their huge wings as a shield), they may be able to repel extremely powerful attacks. Moreover, while the flames are not inherently destructive as a natural fire, they do not lack potential for complete offensive use, as Marco has shown the ability to use his power to attack using his flames, rather than blunt force.

The phoenix flames have the ability to heal living beings as well. Even if the targets are in huge numbers, the user can manually spread out their fire by twirling their wings, though the healing power isn’t as effective as it is on the user itself. As long as the victim’s stamina allows it, the flames will stick to them after they’ve lit other people. This ability may also benefit for medical purposes.

Weaknesses

Even though it’s a powerful ability to heal, there is a limit to how much damage can be healed, as a long recovery is restricted, as the user is not immortal.

It should be noted that while in battle, Marco instantly heals fatal wounds upon receiving them, he frequently leaves relatively minor ones untreated, such as scrapes or bruises. Also, his rate of regeneration may depend on his own preparedness or the degree of his transformation.

The user’s stamina is limited in general, and it seems that using the flames for an extended period of time physically exhausts the person and could prevent them from using the flames again. Marco was temporarily out of commission, which witnesses attributed to his stamina being spent from battling two strong opponents for a prolonged length of time and having used his flames earlier on numerous people.

The healing power of the blue flames is not as potent when used on other people as it is on the user’s own body. They also depend on the recipient’s stamina and the fire ceases to work when it runs out.

Apart from these, the user is vulnerable to the standard Devil Fruit flaws.

Usage and Techniques of the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix

Marco’s skills have earned him the nickname, “Marco, the Phoenix”, and he has shown various skills with his transformation for aerial warfare. This Devil Fruit is shown to be incredibly adaptable due to its physical and legendary characteristics, playing not only aggressive or defensive roles in a battle but also supportive ones. Marco’s bird characteristics allow him to fly at great speeds while either using his human legs or to perform powerful kicks, knee strikes, or cutting talon attacks with his phoenix legs.

Marco can also use his wings to restrain enemies, even extremely powerful and fully transformed Ancient Zoan users. He can also direct his flames into attacks that deal concussive damage to opponents rather than burning damage.

Marco’s regeneration acts as a passive defense during battle. Even powerful opponents may mistakenly believe Marco is invulnerable because he can completely ignore most physical attacks, allowing melee and ranged attacks, even weapons, to pass through his body before his wounds close up and vanish without a trace. He has also been observed shielding his allies with his own body and flames before healing himself afterward.

On battlefields where there are numerous potential allies to be healed from wounds or infections, Marco’s flames have proven to be extremely helpful. His flame’s healing powers allowed him to serve as a doctor for years after the Whitebeard Pirates got disbanded. It also helped him to perform doctorship on Sphinx.

Marco has made practical use of flying to move quickly through battlefields and avoid enemies on the ground. During his apprenticeship, Marco served as a scout for the Whitebeard Pirates, exploring uncharted islands.

Like other Zoan users, Marco can freely switch between his full Beast Form and that of a human-phoenix hybrid. However, unlike most Zoan users so far, Marco is able to selectively transform only certain parts of his body without changing his overall appearance. Mostly, this involves changing only his arms and legs into phoenix wings and tails while leaving his head and torso unaltered.

Marco has demonstrated the following techniques using his Devil Fruit powers:

Fujiazami (Immortal Thistle)

When defending himself, Marco will transform into a phoenix and leap in front of the person he wants to protect. He creates a shield of fire out of his wings in front of him while in midair to deflect the incoming attack.

Hoo-in (Fenghuang Seal)

Marco prepares his phoenix talons in front of him while still in midair, and then strikes a target with a powerful two-legged kick. In the anime, this technique has been demonstrated using only one leg.

Nashi no Tsubute (Pineapple Stone)

This is a support type technique in which Marco turns his arms into phoenix wings and spins them around to spread his flames outward and ignite potential crowds of opponents in order to cure them.

Blue Bird (Blue-Flamed Goose)

This is a support-type move in which Marco turns his arms into phoenix wings and spins them around to spread his flames outward and ignite potential crowds of people in order to cure them.

Ongle (Crane Claw)

This is a similar technique to Hoo-in. Marco performs a single legged phoenix kick melee attack with four razor sharp claws that do slashing damage to the target. Ongle is French for “mail”. Given the kanji, the name of the attack might also be a play on how the fenghuang is described in modern accounts as a hybrid of several birds, including having legs like a crane.

Saisei no Hono (Flames of Regeneration)

This is a non-canon technique which is shown in the One Piece Video Game: Pirate Warriors 2 & 3. In this technique, Marco transforms into a phoenix and spreads his wings to create a shockwave that revives everything around him. This technique is named “Rebirth Flame” in the game’s English Release.

Tensi no Soen (Pale Flame of Transmigration)

This is a non-canon technique which is shown in the One Piece Video Game: Pirate Warriors 2 & 3. In this technique, Marco transforms into a phoenix, circles enemies to lift them into the air, and then plunges to the ground while flying incredibly high, sending a shockwave. This technique is named “Blue Transmigration Flame” in the game’s English Release.

Phoenix Goen (Phoenix Great Flame)

This is a non-canon technique which is shown in the One Piece Video Game: Pirate Warriors 2. In this technique, while flying, Marco fires a strong, blazing shockwave forward from his wings. This technique is named “Phoenix Inferno” in the game’s English Release.

Zoan-kei Genjushu (Animal System Mythical Beast Species)

This is a non-canon technique which is shown in the One Piece Video Game: Burning Blood. In this technique, Marco launches himself into the air, knocking an enemy into the air, then flying over to them and kicking them to the ground. This technique is named “Mythical Zoan” in the game’s English Release.

Genju Rengeki (Mythical Beast Chain Attack)

This is a non-canon technique which is shown in the One Piece Video Game: Burning Blood. In this technique, Marco flies toward an enemy and continues to hit them after doing so. This technique is named “Beast Chain” in the game’s English Release.

Ichibantai Taicho (First Division Commander)

This is a non-canon technique which is shown in the One Piece Video Game: Burning Blood. In this technique, Marco defends himself from opponents by engulfing himself in phoenix flames. If he is struck in close range, he spins around and sends the assailant flying. If he is struck by distant missiles, he flies into the enemy. This technique is named “1st Squad Commander” in the game’s English Release.
