What is the One Piece?

Gol D. Roger, the King of the Pirates, revealed the existence of the One Piece in his final words before his execution. One Piece is the term used to refer to all the treasures collected by Roger. On the execution stand, Roger declared that his treasure was free to be claimed by anyone who is able to reach it. This marked the beginning of The Great Pirate Era.

It is stated that Gol D. Roger and his pirate crew, known as Roger Pirates, traveled to an unknown island at the end of the Grand Line. Roger had heard tales of a treasure of unimaginable value left on that island by a man known as Joy Boy, at some point in the Void Century. When he learned that the World Government prohibits anyone to travel to or explore this unknown island, he believed that the stories of these legendary tales must be true, and thus decided to find it.

When he and his crew discovered the treasure, they described it as a “tale full of laughs”. Till now, Roger and his crew are the only known individuals who have seen this treasure. This unknown treasure combined with Roger’s treasure became known as the legendary One Piece. Based on this, Roger named this unnamed island, “Laugh Tale.”

It has been a long time since the execution of the King of the Pirates and no one was able to find the One Piece or confirm its existence. There were many speculations that it did not exist and that it was just a last-ditch effort of a dying man to gain attention. It all changed after the battle of Marineford. Whitebeard stated that One Piece is real in his final words. He also stated that there is a great war coming and the world will be shaken to its core when the One Piece is found.

As of now, what exactly the One Piece was is still shrouded in mystery. At one point, there were speculations that the One Piece might not be physical and was more of a lesson of knowledge and enlightenment. Fortunately, these speculations were rendered moot when Eiichiro Oda, the writer and illustrator of the One Piece series, stated it is a physical treasure. Still, the true nature of this legendary treasure is unknown and fans have to wait for the time being, till our favorite pirate crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, finish their journey and claim the One Piece.
