When does Zoro use Haki?

Although there are signs that he may have used Haki much earlier, Zoro officially used Haki for the first time in episode 719 of the One Piece anime with the title, A Decisive Battle in Midair - Zoro's New Special Secret Technique Blasts!

Roronoa Zoro is the first person to join Monkey D. Luffy’s pirate crew, known as the Straw Hat Pirates. Zoro aspires to be the greatest swordsman in the world and is a man of great talent and great potential. Now, as Haki is described as the manifestation of one’s spirit, it is believed that Zoro has been using Haki unknowingly long before it was introduced in the series.

Although it is not confirmed yet, there have been signs indicating that it might be true. One of these instances is when Zoro dodged a knife while sleeping, thrown at him from a faraway location. This is normally an ability one gains after mastering Observation Haki. In episode 613 of the One Piece anime, Zoro intimated Monet as she was about to finish off Tashigi, a navy captain. Now, while Zoro approached Monet, she stopped dead in her tracks as she was paralyzed by fear and unable to move. Even though it is not confirmed, it is usually the effect of Conqueror Haki on its targets.

Although these events hold some water, these are still not confirmed. So, we cannot state that these were incidents in which Zoro used Haki. Thus the first time Zoro used Haki officially is in his final battle against Pica, one of the three top officers of the Donquixote Pirates. He used Haki for the first time in episode 719 of the anime and chapter 778 of the One Piece manga.

Summary of the Episode

Usopp, Kinemon, and Kanjuro cry in terror as Pica stands over the King's Plateau in his enormous stone body. The other combatants on the island realize that Pica is planning to slaughter those on the plateau along with King Riku. While Roronoa Zoro walks up to Columbus and reminds him of how he earlier flung a person like a bombshell before grinning, Elizabello II, who has geared up for his King Punch, asks how long he will make him wait.

When Pica instructs Riku Doldo III to be ready, the Marines fire him in the face with cannonballs, stopping him in his tracks. Pica, however, is unaffected and continues to stomp on the ground close to the Marines, sending a powerful shockwave that destroys everything in its path.

Tank Lepanto commands all in attendance to leave the plateau after being directed by Riku to do so. The residents on the plateau flee in horror as Pica approaches them, and Tank and Viola beg Riku to join them. However, Riku orders them to go as well before declaring that he is Pica's target and that it is in everyone's best interest to flee while he is being attacked.

While this is going on, Orlumbus grabs Zoro and lifts him into the air. Sai asks them what they are going to do. Orlumbus then questions Zoro about if he is sure about using a technique that isn't intended to throw people safely. Zoro responds that they don't have time for anything else.

As Orlumbus gets ready, Zoro snappishly remarks that Pica is only going after people who are not willing to fight when he threatens to demolish the King's Plateau alongside Riku. This is when the population encircles Riku and declares they won't flee and will stand tall beside their king. Pica stopped in his tracks as he believed that Rick is not a king and is not fit to rule over anyone.

Before making fun of Riku's failure to protect Dressrosa due to his lack of military prowess and inability to vanquish his enemies, Pica wonders whether he has regained his former popularity as he once had. He begins dropping his punch to the King's Plateau promising to destroy Riku alongside his ideals, Orlumbus launches Zoro with his Teitoku Killer Bowling technique, one of his signature moves.

Zoro draws his third sword from its sheath, drenches his hands in Busoshoku Haki, popularly known as Armament Haki, and flies through the air toward Pica, unleashing his Three Sword Style. Riku, in the meantime, declares that Pica is correct and that he would never again claim the throne before announcing that he did his best to be a good man.

While spinning the two blades in his hands, Zoro continues to fly through the air, narrating that a planet made up of nine mountains and eight oceans contains nothing he cannot cut. When Pica challenges Riku's claim, Riku responds that he would sooner die than kill someone in order to reign and that a nation based on slaughter has no future.

Pica then mocks Riku for his beliefs, saying they are the reason why the good perish rather than change the course of history. Zoro, using the Three Sword Style Ogi: Ichidai Sanzen Daisen Sekai, also known as Three Sword Style Secret Skill: Great Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds, stops Pica's onslaught by slicing his stone body in half horizontally, shocking all the bystanders. Zoro notices that Pica fled into the upper half of his body and slices that half in two vertically as soon as he sees his eyes reappear.

Before chopping off the arm of the left side where Pica is hiding, Zoro observes that Pica's body will not be able to split into numerous pieces of the stone as the two halves break apart, not touching the ground beneath.

Zoro notices that the stone hand's fingers are twitching and notes that Pica cannot escape into the ground while in midair before chopping off the stone hand's fingers and ordering Pica to come out. When Pica doesn't answer, Zoro slices the remaining arm into five pieces and asks him how long he intends to remain hidden.

This causes Pica to emerge from one of the pieces and demand to know if Zoro feels he has already won. Pica claims that he will not lose if his entire body is covered with Busoshoku Haki (Armament Haki ) before asserting that Zoro will lose if he is knocked off from this position. Zoro responds by saying that this will only occur if Pica's Haki is more powerful than his Haki.

Zoro asks Pica if he knows what people name individuals like him before remembering his fight with Dracule Mihawk, the greatest swordsman in the world, on the Baratie (Zeff’s restaurant in North Blue) as Pica states that his Haki is unquestionably stronger.

Zoro spins his blades into a triangle and says he doesn't have time for someone like Pica to hold him up before diving toward him as Pica attacks. Pica's helmet splits open as he coughs up blood as Zoro slices him with Sanzen Sekai, confirming his claim that he can cut anything, and tells him to quit harming innocent people.

Usopp, also known as God Usopp, declares that they are going to die regardless as the debris from Pica's damaged stone corpse starts to fall on the plateau as stunned Elizabello remarks that Zoro has saved his friend, King Riku. Elizabello, however, uses his King Punch to blow the debris away before becoming irritated with Zoro for forcing him to use it for cleaning duty while Zoro praises him for a job well done.
