Kuzan, also known as Aokiji, was the first Marine Admiral that was introduced in the series. Aokiji saved the lives of thousands of Marines during the Marineford War. He possesses the Hie Hie devil fruit which allows him to create, control, and transform ice. Aokiji's haki is also known to be very strong. He is famously known to have saved and reduced the casualty count that would have been caused during the Marineford War by a landslide.

Aokiji joined the Marines when he was 19 years old and was under Zephyr. Even though he had joined the Marines, he never held the World Government in high regard. When the Marines got to know that the Roger Pirates and Golden Lion Pirates were about to battle in the Edd War, Kuzan was present in Marineford and walked with Monkey D. Garp, Jaguar D. Saul and Tsuru. He told Garp that when he turned down yet another promotion, it was really cool.
Saul was able to get to the island's coast by accepting Olvia's request. However, the Marine ships found him and started firing. As he was carrying Robin, Saul set her down and started destroying several ships. As Robin attempted to head for the evacuation ship but was unsuccessful, she saw Saul being killed by Vice Admiral Kuzan while walking away in tears.
Robin met Kuzan when he ran to the raft that Saul had made. He told her that he was letting Robin go because he was interested in knowing why Saul saved her. Kuzan warned her that if she tried anything, he would be the first to go after Robin. Then Robin left on a boat using an ice route Kuzan had prepared for her. She broke down in tears as Ohara was destroyed, leaving her as the sole survivor. As he wanted to save Robin, Aokiji even froze Spandine’s ship and prevented him from pursuing Robin.
After being promoted to Admiral, Aokiji saw an island being attacked by a huge disturbance and when he looked around he saw the ruins of a large city and a small boy named Grount near it. He thought that Grount was responsible for the damage but then Grount revealed that his left was monstrous and he could not control it. When Grount unwillingly attacked Aokiji, he froze his left arm to free him from his suffering and knocked him out. He then took him to the Marines where he was given a metal attachment to control his left arm. Aokiji trained Grount with Bonham and Zappa but did not let him fight on the frontlines till he could master his power.
After the Long Ring Long Island Arc Aokiji met with Robin and threatened her that he would tell her whole crew about her dark past. She tried to attack him but he was unharmed, he then froze Robin with his powers and then tried to smash her frozen form but she was taken away by her crew. She managed to survive after having the ice melted by her crew putting hot water on her.
After the Straw Hats defeated the CP9 and rescued Nico Robin and even managed to escape the Buster call during the Enies Lobby Arc, Aokiji saw the entire aftermath of the situation. The crew has passed his ‘test’ and the results were far beyond his expectations. When his soldiers asked if they should pursue the Straw Hats, Aokiji declined and said that they had already suffered heavy damage and were already defeated.
During the Amazon Lily Arc, Aokiji was leading the marines to battle against Whitebeard and a duel between Whitebeard and Aokiji took place. Later in Impel Down when Ace gets freed, he attacked Luffy and Ace and they had a duel. In the end Aokiji tried to freeze the sea so that no one could escape and leave Marinford.
During the Marineford War, Aokiji helps the other Marine Admirals construct a haki-infused wall to dodge earthquake shockwave attacks that were launched by Whitebeard.
The infamous duel between Akainu and Aokiji took place on Punk Hazard. This duel took place because Aokiji was strictly against the decision that Akainu be promoted to become a Fleet Admiral due to his cruel and corrupt nature. This battle lasted for ten days and the aftermath of this fight had the island surrounded with fire on one side and icebergs on the other. After this fight Aokiji resigned from the Marines.
When the Corrida Colosseum tournaments took place, Burgess told Blackbeard about Aokiji and said that he couldn't be trusted. Blackbeard replied to him saying that the same can be said about Shiryu. It was later confirmed by the Five Elders that Aokiji had joined the Blackbeard Pirates.
It was said that Aokiji was there at Hachinosu after Koby was kidnapped by the Blackbeard Pirates and he even overheard what Blackbeard was going to do with Koby. After getting to know that Koby was a part of SWORD, he told Blackbeard the nature of SWORD.
Aokiji is known for his laid-back attitude and is expressionless. This is one of the reasons why some of the Mariners think that he is not actually an admiral and underestimate him. Despite this, if Aokiji thinks that a situation is worthy enough to be taken seriously, he will take it seriously.
Aokiji is known to be compassionate and it is seen to be projected onto pirates whose actions he deems acceptable. This shows that he can compromise with pirates. Aokiji is also very loyal to the World Government and he did his best to follow their orders, even if it went against his own ideals. He would sometimes show mercy to people even if it meant that he had to go against his orders. After seeing countless murders take place, Aokiji realized to what depths the World Government can go to complete their goals.
Aokiji is usually in a relaxed state while doing his duties. Even though he didn't want the position of Fleet Admiral, he was against the decision that Akainu got due to his ruthless and cruel nature. Aokiji resigned from the Marines when he lost the battle against Akainu. After he left the Marines, Aokiji realized how evil and corrupt the World Government truly is. He started wandering around and still cares about the people who are close to him.
Aokiji is very tall with a lean build. He is a slim and muscular man. He is almost 9 ft tall and has black curly hair with tanned skin. He wore the Marines uniform which is a white buttoned-up shirt with a standing collar over a long-sleeved navy blue shirt with white trousers and black shoes. He wears a yellow tie with a sleeping mask on his forehead. Sometimes he is seen wearing a green and purple mask too. When he was a child, Aokiji wore a light blue shirt with purple striped shorts. He used to carry an umbrella tied to his back, an alcohol bottle, and a backpack. His hair was even curlier at that time.
During the Ohara incident, Aokiji wore a blue bandana with the white Marine symbol on it with black sunglasses that covered his hair. He wore a white V-neck shirt with black trousers with a dark blue-green trench coat.
During the Punk Hazard Arc, Aokiji had burn scars on the right side of his neck down to his right shoulder to his torso. His right hand is also scarred and he lost a part of his left leg and wears a prosthetic one he made from his devil fruit power.
After he joined the Blackbeard Pirates, Aokiji wears a light-colored dress shirt with a cravat, dark pants with a dark trench coat with a fur collar draped around his shoulders.
Aokiji’s strategizing skills were top notch and he used to command whole fleets and used to even issue Buster Calls on any island which he thought could be a potential threat. He has really good leadership skills and charisma even though he was known to be casual. He is one of the strongest in the Marines and is known as the ‘Greatest Military Power’ that the World Government has. He was on par with Akainu during their duel on Punk Hazard and came out almost uninjured. He also has great navigation skills and can travel the whole Grand Line using his ice bicycle.
Aokiji is also known for his immense physical strength and showed his strength when he easily stopped Zoro and Sanji and took a hit from Luffy; it did not make him loosen his grip on the other two. He has high durability and is seen being unfazed by a Haki-infused attack being sent at him. He is also known for his speed and agility and can jump to extreme heights quite easily within seconds. His attack speed is also very great as he was able to intercept Whitebeard’s attack easily. He also has acute hearing and can detect any activity happening underwater from hundreds of meters away.
Aokiji ate the Hie Hie no Mi which is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that gives him the ability to Create, Control, and transform his body into ice at will. Even though Logia users don't get hit by the physical attacks as they are able to change into their elements, this is not the case with Aokiji; he is easily hit as ice is a solid element. Attacks that are not infused with Haki do not affect him at all. Aokiji is able to make different forms from ice and uses them to create weapons during his fights. He can also incapacitate his enemies by freezing them solid once he physically touches them and can also trap his opponents in huge spheres of ice to prevent them from escaping.
When he freezes his enemies, they are left in a very fragile state and could break and shatter by any type of contact but a person can be freed from being frozen if they are thawed carefully and properly. Aokiji can freeze a large area by just dipping his hands in water and this can last for long periods of time. He can even save himself from falling into water by freezing it before he can sink. This prevents him from drowning and also stops his enemies from escaping as well. His devil fruit ability is really impressive.
Aokiji is very skilled in using Haki.
Aokiji is seen using Busoshoku Haki during the Marineford war to dodge a powerful shockwave that was sent out by Whitebeard with the help of his fellow admirals.
Aokiji is a very skilled user of Kenbunshoku Haki.
Aokiji is seen using different types of weapons that he makes out of ice, like a sword.
Kuzan has known Garp since before he was an admiral, and is even owed for helping him once. He also respected Garp for constantly rejecting promotions because the latter was happy with the rank that had been given to him since Roger's time.
Jaguar D. Saul was close friends with Kuzan. He may seem to have let Robin go due to Saul during the destruction of Ohara. Out of respect for Saul's wishes, he feels obligated to keep an eye on Robin until she finds her place in the world. This friendship was not enough for Kuzan to spare Saul's life, although it is eventually revealed that Saul was alive, thus proving that Kuzan had actually shown mercy towards his friend.
Kuzan hates Sakazuki since he adheres to "Absolute Justice" to a murderous degree. This hatred has a long history, as Kuzan once called Sakazuki a fool for going overboard when he slaughtered innocent Ohara citizens to make sure that none of the archaeologists evaded the Buster Call when both of them were still vice admirals.
Smoker knows Kuzan because he talked about the message regarding Luffy that Smoker had sent to him but that Kuzan had decided not to deliver because he found it to be dumb. After saving the Vice Admiral from Donquixote Doflamingo in the Punk Hazard Arc, he even goes so far as to call him his friend.
Sengoku's recommendation of Kuzan for fleet admiral shows that he has enough confidence and respect for him to lead the Marines.
Aokiji was devoted to the World Government while he was serving with the Marines. Despite his best efforts, he occasionally discovered that his own values were contradictory to the government's values. He would occasionally show mercy and honor, something other World Government officials did not. Aokiji may have realized the extent to which the World Government will go in order to further its objectives after witnessing the needless killing of innocent people.
Kuzan has had encounters with many of the Warlords of the Sea. Kuzan appears to harbor hatred towards Crocodile because of what he did to Alabasta. Kuzan made a sarcastic apology to Jinbe for freezing the water to block their escape. He also prevented Smoker from being killed by Donquixote Doflamingo on Punk Hazard.
Kuzan shows some disappointment that Nico Robin chose to be a pirate. The relationship between Kuzan and Nico Robin is also made clear by the fact that Kuzan had to kill his close friend, former Vice Admiral Jaguar D. Saul, by freezing him to death after the latter refused to take part in the Ohara massacre when he was a vice admiral. As it turned out, Saul was also Robin's best friend at the time, and it was a very traumatic experience for Robin, who is now afraid of Kuzan. He told her that he was letting Robin go because he was interested in knowing why Saul saved her. Kuzan warned her that if she tried anything, he would be the first to go after Robin. He was relieved when he saw Robin find a place where she belongs i.e. with the Straw Hats.
Despite him being a pirate, Kuzan is seen to have respect for Luffy. On their first encounter, he acknowledged Luffy's leadership. Rather than risking the entire crew being wiped out, Luffy preferred to settle things with him in a one-on-one duel. Kuzan is impressed by Luffy's rapid rise to fame.
Kuzan's traveling companion is Camel, whom he met when he left the Marines. They are known to get along well.
Kuzan joined the Blackbeard Pirates after the time skip. It is not sure how the crew sees him. Like Jesus Burgess, they are hesitant to trust him due to his past as a Marine. Blackbeard doesn't really seem to care. He maintains a casual relationship with the crew.

In One Piece Premier Show 2011, Aokiji and the other admirals come to Marine Island where the Straw Hat Pirates try to rescue Nami and Robin. They leave after Bentham, disguised as a Marine, tells them that Charlos has been injured and needs to retreat. In One Piece Premier Show 2013, Kuzan comes to Paradise Island and stops Doflamingo from helping Lambor Bukini. He and Jinbe chase off Caribou and Coribou before Luffy defeats Bukini.
Aokiji appears in Super Kabuki II: One Piece during the retelling of the Marineford Arc.
Kuzan appears in the Nami and Marineford versions of the Hungry Days commercials.
