Hakuto was born and raised on the island of Tomoshibi. When he grew older, Ace assisted him in safeguarding the island against attacking pirates. Ace proposed to Whitebeard to claim the island as his domain so that Hakuto might join the crew and travel with him to sea after the two disposed of the pirates and became friends. Ace torched a flame on the island's tower to signify that it was under their protection after Whitebeard agreed.
After losing the Payback War, Hakuto parted ways with the crew but eventually returned to continue Ace's legacy and defend his island on his own.
At some point, the Straw Hat Pirates used Coup de Burst to get away from the Marines and onto Tomoshibi Island. When Luffy arrived on the island alone, he overheard Hakuto discussing Ace and the battle against the invading pirates. The pirates fled when they learned Luffy was helping them and hopped in to assist. Once the group caught up to Luffy, Hakuto recognized him and apologized for Ace's death while revealing that he was formerly a member of the Whitebeard Pirates. He did his best, and Luffy pardoned him.
Hakuto and the other inhabitants of the island hosted a feast to greet their visitors. Franky and Chopper returned to shore to check on the Thousand Sunny, while Luffy and Hakuto became close because of Ace. Hakuto told Luffy about his relationship with Ace and the Payback War events. He informed the young captain that the tower's fire was proof that Ace had protected the island.
The BIG Pirates attacked Luffy and Hakuto during the celebration break. Noir attacked his blind area before biting Brook and Usopp as Hakuto rushed them. Neiro made the crew obese using his Devil Fruit powers to immobilize them, but Franky later showed up and stopped him from doing the same to Hakuto. Hakuto rushed out to defend Ace's fire as Franky and Chopper assisted the rest of the crew in losing weight after he performed Coup de Boo to force the BIG Pirates to flee.
Hakuto arrived at Ace's flame in time to stop the BIG Pirates, but after drawing his sword, he was shot by Bad One Gracie. When Luffy helped him, he shocked Neiro by quickly burning off the extra fat. Neiro and Noir were pushed back by Luffy, and Gracie called in Germa 66 to help. Zoro and Sanji both vanquished Neiro and Noir as the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates arrived to battle them.
When Luffy approached Gracie, he used his newly awakened Devil Fruit powers to surround Tomoshibi Island with cannons and fire on the crew and Hakuto. Ace's flame was extinguished by him, but Luffy and Hakuto endured. Ace's spirit rekindled the flames as Luffy vowed to defend the island. As Ace's flame and Hakuto's sword started to glow blue, Luffy used them to set his hands on fire and defeat Gracie with the Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk.
Luffy defeated the enemy and promised to protect the island from now on. Hakuto bowed deeply in appreciation as Luffy reunited with his crew. They hosted a party, and Blackbeard was summoned aboard a Den Den Mushi by Jesus Burgess, who had traveled to the island to observe the BIG Pirates. Sabo and Koala arrived at the tower after pursuing Burgess from Dressrosa after Germa 66 left. Before leaving, Sabo cried for Ace as they turned to face the fire.
Geographically, Tomoshibi Island resembles the layout of the WaterWorld stage at Universal Studios Japan. A large tower with a flame ignited by Portgas D. Ace stands in the island's middle.
