Bentham in One Piece

Bentham of the Wild, better known by his alias, “Mr. 2,” is an okama and the new queen of Newkama Land situated in the Impel Down prison. He was a former Baroque Works Officer before the organization's defeat.

Hailing from the East Blue, Bentham is one of the major antagonists during the Arabasta arc. Initially an enemy to Luffy and Straw Hat Pirates, Bentham became a major ally to Luffy during the Impel Down arc as he helped Luffy escape prison to help rescue Ace.

Bentham’s Personality

Bentham has a flamboyant attitude and enjoys singing, dancing, and spinning. He is an assassin, but to him, friendship comes before anything else. He is exceedingly selfless and righteous and very pleased with himself for it. He will frequently use the justification that leaving his friends behind is against "the okama way" to justify such behaviour.

As a Baroque Works Officer, he was the only superior without a female partner of equal rank. Given his abilities and way of life as a self-described okama and the fact that he has never truly worn women's clothing aside from the makeup smeared over his face, he may believe he is both male and female.

He always ends a statement with the Japanese syllable "wa yo," which denotes a feminine (if aggressive) speech pattern. His catchphrase is "Jodan janai wa yo!" which translates to "It's not a joke!" or "Not joking around!" When he asks others what four is, he also says "Un Deux Trois" (one, two, three in French). His favourite term, in his opinion, is ambiguous.

Bentham’s Appearance

Bentham is pretty tall and a crossdresser with flashy, swan-themed ballet clothing. He commonly wears a blue mediaeval dress and a pink overcoat. He frequently wears a lot of makeup and has a unique broad grin that persists even when he alters his appearance. Being exposed, his bare legs have hair, and his physique is rather muscular underneath these garments.

Bentham can impersonate any individual due to his Devil Fruit powers. He occasionally tricked people by transforming into someone else with the person's exact outfit and looks, convincing the onlookers that he is actually the person he impersonates.

When initially imprisoned, he wore the usual prisoner outfit in Impel Down. Two years later, when he becomes the new Queen of Newkama Land, he is shown with a somewhat altered version of his ballet clothing, including details like more enormous wings and a furry collar.

Bentham’s Abilities

Bentham, one of the top-ranking members of the criminal organisation before Baroque Works fell, probably had many "Billions" (the lesser-ranking agents of Baroque Works Officers) under his direction.

As an okama, he has many skills at his disposal. Even though he enjoys singing and dancing and is an expert martial artist, his actual threat does not stem from his skill in battle. His ability to deceive and manipulate his enemies using his Devil Fruit Powers and his acting prowess to get what he wants from them accounts for most of his threat level.

Physical Abilities

Bentham has remarkable superhuman physical power due to his rigorous, thorough training in Okama Kenpo. He can perform a wide range of acrobatic flips, twirls, somersaults, and cartwheels, including ballerina rotation at high speed for enhanced speed to enhance the force of his kicks, and is incredibly agile, easily matching Sanji.

Thanks to his incredible acrobatic ability, he is incredibly evasive and can quickly block or avoid attacks. When combined with others' abilties, Bentham's attacks can be far superior and lethal.

He possesses tremendous stamina and endurance. Bentham continued to sing and dance enthusiastically while being held in the Level 3 prison of Impel Down, completely unaffected by the sweltering heat. In Level 5, Bentham could drag Luffy for a significant amount of time despite remaining bare-chested and braving the bitter cold.

Despite suffering severe injuries and being exposed to bitter cold during the battle, he had enough power to repel a big Wolf Unit alone. Bentham also prevailed over Magellan, who had earlier easily defeated Luffy.

Deception and Trickery

He may have a flamboyant and playful attitude, but he also possesses a remarkable talent for cunning, deception, and impersonation. Because of this, he is a challenging opponent to deal with because he can just as readily elude capture as he can bring devastating confusion to the side he opposes.

He mimicked Nefertari Cobra, infiltrated the seemingly safe Alubarna royal court, and used disgraceful comments to further agitate and divide the poor villagers beyond the palace gates. Once released from his cell, he also used his shrewd tactical insight to get past the legendary Impel Down's ultra-strict security measures.

During the Impel Down arc, Bentham disguised himself in many forms to help Luffy escape from the prison and free Ace, like impersonating Nami to trick Hannyabal, transforming into Magellan to order prison operators to open the Gates of Justice, etc.

Devil Fruit

Bentham consumed the Mane Mane no Mi Devil Fruit, a Paramecia variety that allows him to physically resemble anyone whose face he has touched with his right hand. By touching his face with his right hand, he transforms into a different person, and by touching it with his left hand, he returns to his original state. He is a master of disguise and deception, thanks to this talent.

He can exactly imitate his target's full physical make-up, including their voice and stature, in addition to just their voice. Additionally, he can combine and contrast the traits of many faces in his collection to create entirely new looks.

In battle, he uses his ability to change into someone his enemy would never harm, like a close friend. However, he must change back into his regular shape before attacking because his fighting style necessitates an extent of power and flexibility that most other individuals lack.

Okama Kenpo

Bentham is a charismatic martial artist and a master of Okama Kenpo, a distinctive, dance-based martial art. In this form, Ballet dance is combined with powerful, acrobatic kicks, punches, and occasionally both.

He can use a variety of solid kicks in Okama Kenpo for offence and acrobatic dance-like moves for evasion. One of his strongest attacks, it can defeat or stop even the most formidable foes.

Weapons

Bentham can cut them off in the middle of their necks and put them on his toe shoes. The steel beaks on the swans make Bentham's kicks stronger than rifle rounds when he has them on his feet, and they also have a greater field of effect because the swans' necks lengthen with each kick.

He can detach and throw his sharp boomerang-shaped (likely fake) mascara Matsuge, which shoots out in an arc to hit his foes before returning to his face.

Bentham’s Relationships

Baroque Works

Bentham was quite friendly with almost every member of the Baroque Works. Sometimes, male Officers were annoyed due to his attitude and poetic demeanour. Even so, he got along well with most of them. He held command over the Billions, whom he had strict authority over. However, he didn’t tolerate anyone attacking them even if they are part of the organization.

Monkey D. Luffy

Bentham and Luffy became close friends after Bentham expressed regret for getting them into trouble in Arabasta. He later joined Luffy in Impel Down after escaping his prison and rejoining him, and they battled to reach Ace. Mr. 2 was a huge help to Luffy throughout their reunion as he navigated the different dangers of the prison.

Ultimately, Mr. 2 backed Luffy and several other prisoners by giving his life to pave the path for their release. Although it was later found that he was still alive, Luffy is unaware of his friend's health.

Straw Hat Pirates

After assisting the Straw Hats in escaping Hina in Arabasta and again in Impel Down, Bentham is a close buddy of the crew. Strangely, he refers to the members of Luffy's crew by an essential component of their looks, followed by the honorific "-chan" (e.g., Luffy: Straw-Chan (Mugi-chan), Usopp: Nose-Chan, etc.). This adoration is reciprocated by Luffy, who addresses him as "Bon-chan".

Sanji

The relationship between Sanji and Bentham is complicated. Even though he calls the cook "pretty boy" when speaking nicely, he sparred violently with Sanji. Later, Bentham's friendship with Sanji was entirely one-sided since when he called the Straw Hats on a Den Den Mushi, Sanji immediately hung up.

However, Sanji was viewed as one of the four Straw Hats who wept over his sacrifice. For that reason, people had a more favourable opinion of Bentham.

Galdino

The okama's acts at Impel Down deeply upset Mr. 3, who initially thought of Mr. 2 Bon Kurei as a foolish annoyance. Mr. 3 believed his activities in Marineford helped exact revenge on his "fallen friend," as he termed it.

Emporio Ivankov

Ivankov is revered by Bentham for being the best okama and saving his and Luffy's lives. Iva was impressed by Luffy and Bon Kurei's close relationship. She was one of the many captives who sobbed when they learned that Bon Kurei had given his life to open the Gates of Justice for them.

Magellan

Bentham has earned the anger of Magellan, the former warden, for staying behind during the escape to allow the other escapees to escape and imitating his face to trick the other staff. Bentham was asked if he had any parting statements as Magellan got ready to lash out at him.

Bentham answered with pride, claiming he didn't regret making the sacrifice. Bentham was not killed by Magellan, who still resents his failure.
