Helmeppo's life took a dramatic turn when Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, and Koby arrived in Shells Town. He had been living a privileged and carefree life thanks to his father's position as the captain of the 153rd Branch of the Marines. Helmeppo used his father's authority to mistreat both his fellow Marines and the townspeople.
One day, Helmeppo's pet wolf, Soro, attacked a young girl named Rika. Roronoa Zoro, a traveling bounty hunter, intervened and killed the wolf to save Rika. Enraged, Helmeppo had Zoro arrested and confiscated his swords, promising a full pardon if Zoro could survive a month of detention without food.
After nine days, seeing that Zoro had not broken, Helmeppo, with his father's approval, decided to execute Zoro as a warning to the townspeople. This act of cruelty drew the attention of Luffy, who had come to Shells Town looking for Zoro. Luffy punched Helmeppo after witnessing his mistreatment of Zoro and Rika.
Humiliated and furious, Helmeppo sought retribution from his father, Captain Morgan. To his surprise, Morgan responded by striking him and prioritizing the execution of Rika. When Luffy captured Helmeppo and used him as a guide and shield against pursuing Marines, Helmeppo fainted.
Later, Helmeppo woke up to find Luffy, Koby, and Zoro openly defying the 153rd Branch and his father, Captain Morgan. Despite his desperation, Helmeppo's attempt to take Koby hostage with a pistol failed when Luffy punched him unconscious.
After Captain Morgan was arrested, Helmeppo's life took a different turn. Although he was allowed to stay at the 153rd Branch, he was assigned the role of a chore-boy, a stark contrast to his previous privileged lifestyle. Helmeppo was not pleased with this change and resented having to work alongside the eager recruit Koby. He spent much of his free time attempting to curse Luffy with voodoo dolls as an expression of his frustration.
Their next task involved chore duty on a ship that was transferring the prisoner, Captain Morgan. While cleaning the ship's weapons, Helmeppo worried about his father potentially receiving the death penalty. However, things took a chaotic turn when Vice Admiral Garp arrived to take custody of Morgan. During the chaos, Morgan managed to slash Garp and take Helmeppo hostage. They escaped on a small boat.
It was during this escape that Helmeppo made a significant decision. He abandoned his father and swam back to the Marine ship. Alongside Koby and the other Marines, he apologized to Vice Admiral Garp for the disturbance and referred to themselves as worthless. In response, Garp decided to take Helmeppo and Koby with him to Marine Headquarters for training.
Helmeppo and Koby were seen walking alongside Vice Admiral Garp, showing some of the physical changes they underwent during their training.
After the Straw Hat Pirates returned from their raid on Enies Lobby, Helmeppo and Koby confronted two of the crew members, Zoro and Luffy, respectively, in Water 7. However, their attempts to capture them were in vain, as both Marines were easily defeated.
Luffy and Zoro initially had trouble remembering who Helmeppo was until he reminded them. They briefly recalled him as the annoying, spoiled brat from their earlier encounter, much to Helmeppo's dismay.
Helmeppo was later shocked to hear from Vice Admiral Garp that the infamous Revolutionary Monkey D. Dragon was his son and Luffy's father. This revelation left him wondering about the complexity of the family with so many notorious individuals in it.
When Vice Admiral Garp returned to his ship, Helmeppo and Koby stayed behind to reminisce with Luffy. They declined Luffy's invitation to eat together, as the Marines and pirates could not be too friendly due to their opposing affiliations. Before parting ways, they promised to meet Luffy again in the New World and expressed their determination to get stronger in the meantime.
As the Marines chased the Straw Hat Pirates while they sailed away from Water 7, Helmeppo tried unsuccessfully to calm Vice Admiral Garp after Luffy taunted him. When the Thousand Sunny managed to escape, Helmeppo had to hold Koby back from celebrating too enthusiastically.
During the war against the Whitebeard Pirates and the Marines at Marineford, Helmeppo, along with Monkey D. Garp and Koby, reported to Marine Headquarters to participate in the battle. Just three hours before Portgas D. Ace's execution, they listened to Fleet Admiral Sengoku's speech about Ace's past, including the revelation that Ace was Gol D. Roger's son. Helmeppo and Koby concluded that Ace and Luffy were not real brothers.
As the battle raged on, Helmeppo and Koby witnessed the chaos of Marineford, including the ruthless actions of Admiral Akainu. They also saw Luffy and his allies fall from the sky in an unconventional arrival.
When Fleet Admiral Sengoku revealed that Luffy was Dragon's son, both Helmeppo and Koby were shocked by the disclosure of such sensitive information.
As Koby collapsed from the overwhelming emotions and voices in his head disappearing, Helmeppo tried to help him regain his composure. However, their efforts to stop the fighting were in vain, and Koby ultimately confronted Admiral Akainu, demanding that the violence cease. Shanks arrived just in time to prevent Akainu from killing Koby, who lost consciousness in the process.
After the events at Marineford, Koby was taken to the Marine Headquarters medical center, and Helmeppo stayed at his bedside. Koby was clearly traumatized by the events, and Doctor Fishbonen explained that what Koby was feeling was Haki.
Doctor Fishbonen informed them that all Vice Admirals are able to use Haki, and Garp should be able to help Koby. Helmeppo expressed envy at Koby's apparent advancement in skill, though Koby claimed to have not known about the ability in the first place.
Helmeppo appeared on a Marine battleship alongside Koby and Garp, where they learned about the existence of Zephyr and his past.
Helmeppo and Koby thwarted a pirate attack on the Dressrosa-Prodence Kingdom convoy to the Levely. They successfully defended the convoy and rescued a prisoner from the pirates.
Helmeppo and Koby arrived at Delta Island to capture the pirates and faced several opponents. They later offered to fight Douglas Bullet during a Buster Call on the island but were forced to withdraw by Hina.
Helmeppo attended a concert on Elegia organized by Uta.
Helmeppo accompanied Koby and the Marines to Amazon Lily to arrest Boa Hancock after the abolishment of the Seven Warlords of the Sea system. He was turned to stone by Hancock's Mero Mero no Mi powers but returned to normal after Silvers Rayleigh ended the conflict.
After Koby was kidnapped by Marshall D. Teach, Helmeppo traveled to G-14 in the New World. He and Hibari begged Marine HQ Rear Admiral and fellow SWORD member Prince Grus to join them in rescuing Koby from Hachinosu. Garp arrived and informed Helmeppo that he planned to launch an attack on Hachinosu to rescue Koby.
Helmeppo's personality undergoes significant development throughout the series. Initially introduced as a spoiled and obnoxious individual, he abuses his father's position of power to exploit and threaten others. He is quick to resort to intimidation tactics, often using the threat of arrest and execution to achieve his goals.
However, beneath his haughty exterior, there are hints of sentimentality, and he occasionally displays small acts of mercy. After losing his privileged lifestyle due to his father's fall from grace, Helmeppo's character starts to evolve. He becomes a chore boy, forced to work alongside Koby, initially rejecting Koby's friendly overtures.
Helmeppo's loyalty to his father is evident when he tearfully witnesses his father's execution. However, as he comes to realize that his father is as brutal and ruthless as the pirates he despises, Helmeppo undergoes a transformation. He disowns his father, effectively cutting the last ties to his old self.
As the series progresses, Helmeppo matures further, leaving behind his spoiled and entitled behavior. He becomes braver and less of a brat, eventually forming a close friendship with Koby. By the time of the Water 7 arc, he reflects on his past actions and recognizes the stark contrast between his former self and who he has become. This self-awareness demonstrates his growth and development.
In contrast to Koby's more aggressive nature, Helmeppo tends to be more levelheaded when analyzing situations. He possesses a sense of formality, which becomes more pronounced after the time skip.
Helmeppo is depicted as a lanky and average-sized young man with light blonde hair. During this phase, he sports a distinctive mushroom-shaped hairstyle and flashy leisure suits. He has a cleft chin, and it's worth noting that he wears a rubber-band ring on his left hand as part of his original look.
After his father's fall from power and his demotion to a standard Marine chore-boy, Helmeppo's appearance becomes more subdued. He abandons his eccentric hairstyle and leisure suits for the standard Marine uniform.
Under the intense training of Vice-Admiral Garp, Helmeppo becomes notably taller and more muscular. At this stage, he adopts a broad ponytail hairstyle and wears a white shirt, a pale green vest over it, purple slacks, black gloves, and an unusual black visor over his eyes.
As Helmeppo advances in rank to Chief Petty Officer, he adopts a new attire consistent with his position. However, when he reaches the rank of Lieutenant Commander he wears a brimmed white hat and a junior Marine officer's overcoat.
Unlike many other Marines of similar rank who wear their coats with their arms outside, Helmeppo wears his conventionally, with his arms within the sleeves.
Helmeppo's physical abilities have significantly improved over time. Initially, he was a weakling who relied on his father's influence. However, after undergoing rigorous training under Garp, he developed great physical prowess. He could jump exceptionally high, as demonstrated when he intercepted Zoro.
Following the two-year timeskip, Helmeppo advanced in power to become a lieutenant commander and could effortlessly overpower an entire pirate crew by himself.
In terms of swordsmanship, Helmeppo is quite skilled. He engaged in a brief duel with Zoro, forcing Zoro on the defensive for a short time before ultimately losing. After the timeskip, his swordsmanship improved further, allowing him to cause substantial damage to a pirate submarine while underwater.
He also displayed precision by hitting a high-speed cannonball overhead, although it resulted in a significant explosion. Helmeppo carries a pair of kukri as his preferred weapons. Initially, he showed interest in collecting various weapons but lacked the ability to use them effectively, except for a single pistol.
As a full-fledged Marine, he adopted the kukri as his weapons of choice, keeping them on his belt. Despite his improvements, he still proved to be no match for Zoro in combat. Following the timeskip, Helmeppo upgraded to a larger pair of kukri. Additionally, he appears to have acquired the Rokushiki technique, specifically Soru, a high-speed movement technique.
Furthermore, Helmeppo has hinted at his ability to use Kenbunshoku Haki, although he acknowledges that Koby's proficiency in Haki surpasses his own, especially evident when Koby detected an underwater attack on the ships of the Prodence and Dressrosa Kingdoms that Helmeppo could not sense.
Helmeppo believed that he had a strong and favorable relationship with his father, Captain Morgan. He took advantage of his father's position as a tyrannical Marine Captain to act as he pleased, assuming that his father would support and protect him.
However, this perception was shattered when Helmeppo attempted to order his father to deal with Luffy, who had punched him. Instead of complying, Captain Morgan physically attacked his son, revealing that he had no fatherly affection for him. This incident made it clear that Captain Morgan saw Helmeppo as a worthless son.
After Captain Morgan was stripped of his rank and incarcerated, he managed to escape and took his son, Helmeppo, hostage. During this ordeal, Helmeppo disowned his father, signifying a turning point in their relationship. This marked the beginning of Helmeppo's transformation from a spoiled brat to a more mature and responsible individual.
Garp serves as a mentor to Helmeppo and Koby, providing them with guidance and discipline. Garp's tough-love approach includes physical correction when necessary. Helmeppo appreciates Garp's involvement in the rescue mission to save Koby and respects him as a mentor.
Helmeppo's initial encounter with Koby was marked by hostility when he held Koby at gunpoint to stall Luffy. However, their relationship evolved as they both became chore boys following Captain Morgan's defeat. Helmeppo, after undergoing personal growth and disowning his father, developed a genuine friendship with Koby.
They began working together, and Helmeppo displayed genuine concern for Koby's well-being, especially when Koby was kidnapped by Marshall D. Teach. This deepened their friendship, and Helmeppo was emotionally shaken by Koby's kidnapping, emphasizing the strength of their bond.
Helmeppo's initial interactions with the Straw Hat Pirates, particularly Roronoa Zoro and Monkey D. Luffy, were marked by fear and resentment. He feared them for their defiance of his authority and resented them for toppling his father, Captain Morgan, from power.
However, as time passed, Helmeppo underwent personal growth and came to recognize the importance of Zoro and Luffy in his maturation. During a brief reunion with the Straw Hat Pirates at Water 7, he attempted to reconcile with them, although the crew largely dismissed him while acknowledging Koby's development.
Helmeppo had a pet wolf named Soro, which he was fond of and allowed to roam freely in Shells Town. When Zoro killed the wolf, Helmeppo had him arrested, but he did not seem to grieve much over the wolf's death and never directly mentioned it in his interactions with Zoro.
During Captain Morgan's reign, Rika, like most of Shells Town, abhorred Helmeppo and even cheered when Luffy punched him. Helmeppo did not hesitate to verbally and physically bully Rika during this time, although he was notably disturbed by the idea of killing her.
After Captain Morgan's downfall and Helmeppo's transformation, Rika seemed to warm up to him, possibly due to Koby's friendship with him. When both Helmeppo and Koby were permanently transferred to Marine Headquarters, Rika was upset to the point of tears, indicating a change in their relationship.
