Krieg’s History

Krieg started as a prisoner, but he became a pirate by taking control of a Marine ship. He did this by pretending to be a Marine and killing the ship's leader. He also used sneaky tactics like pretending to be a Marine or using a white flag to trick others.

Krieg was very determined to win, and he built a big crew of pirates in the East Blue. He even called himself "Pirate Admiral Don Krieg."

He went to the Grand Line, hoping to find the One Piece treasure and become the Pirate King. But he met a powerful enemy named Dracule Mihawk, who destroyed Krieg's fleet. Only one of his ships survived, but it was in bad shape. Krieg had to go back to the East Blue in defeat.

To protect his crew, Krieg's right-hand man, Gin, pretended to be the Pirate Admiral to distract the Marines and save the rest of the crew. Gin eventually reunited with Krieg and suggested they go to a place called the Baratie.

Two days later, Krieg and his crew arrived at the Baratie, a floating restaurant. People there were scared because Krieg had a bad reputation. But when they saw Krieg's sad condition and how hungry he was, they were surprised. Krieg and Gin begged for food, even offering to pay for it, but the restaurant staff refused. Krieg even bowed and begged, and this made Gin cry.

After Sanji brought food to Krieg and the crew at the Baratie, Krieg surprised everyone by attacking Sanji as soon as he finished eating. He also injured his loyal crew member, Gin, which shocked everyone present.

Krieg then demanded that the Baratie, the floating restaurant, become his new pirate ship. He also insisted on getting food for his hungry crew. The chefs at the restaurant, however, refused to comply with his demands. Krieg became increasingly angry, emphasizing that no one had ever dared to defy his orders before.

Patty, one of the restaurant's chefs, tried to make peace by offering Krieg dessert. However, this turned out to be a trick, as Patty suddenly brought out a cannon and attacked Krieg with a dish called "Shokuatari Meatball." Krieg didn't like the dessert and retaliated by revealing an arsenal of weapons and attacking the restaurant's chefs.

During the chaos, Krieg began to talk about Zeff the Red Leg, a legendary pirate who had supposedly died in an accident. However, it was revealed that Zeff had only lost a leg, which forced him to retire from piracy and become a chef at the Baratie. Krieg wanted a logbook that Zeff had from his past adventures in the dangerous Grand Line. Zeff, however, refused to lend it to him because of his sentimental attachment to the memories it contained.

So, Krieg and his crew caused turmoil at the Baratie restaurant, both because they wanted to claim it as their new pirate ship and because Krieg sought something valuable from Zeff's past as a pirate chef.

After Krieg's failed attempt to take over the Baratie restaurant, he left to feed his hungry crew. He warned the chefs at the restaurant that they could either run away or face death.

Once back on his ship, Krieg shared his plan with his crew. He wanted to steal the Baratie restaurant's ship and go back to the Grand Line. However, his crew wasn't enthusiastic about returning to such a dangerous place. To motivate them, Krieg shot a crew member who criticized his decision, which quickly changed their minds.

The Krieg Pirates then resumed their attack on the Baratie. But suddenly, their ship was cut in half by the powerful Dracule Mihawk, who had followed them to the East Blue after defeating them in the Grand Line.

Krieg still wanted to take over the Baratie's ship and get Zeff's logbook, which contained information about the Grand Line's powers and how to fight them. The chefs were ready to defend their restaurant and set up a wooden platform to fight on, so they wouldn't damage the restaurant.

During this chaos, Krieg sneakily attacked Monkey D. Luffy, who was watching Sanji fight against Pearl. Krieg's attack inadvertently caused Pearl to hurt himself. To stop Pearl from destroying the Baratie's ship, Krieg threw something at Sanji and Pearl, but Luffy deflected it. However, this object ended up destroying Krieg's own ship's mast, which knocked out Pearl.

But the Krieg Pirates weren't done yet. While the battle raged, one of Krieg's crew members, Gin, threatened the life of Zeff with a gun.

Krieg asked Luffy who was stronger between the two of them, and Luffy confidently said he was the stronger one. In response, Krieg threatened Luffy with a powerful weapon called poison gas MH5. When Luffy tried to deflect it, he realized it was a trick - it was a shuriken bomb. Luffy admitted he was tricked but insisted he was still the strongest.

Krieg got angry and decided to personally deal with Luffy. He used bombs and spears to attack Luffy, and some of the spears injured Luffy's foot, almost causing him to fall into the ocean. Krieg emphasized that in a fight, strategy was important, unlike Luffy who just attacked without a plan.

Meanwhile, Krieg ordered his crew member, Gin, to kill Sanji, but Gin refused because Sanji had helped him before. This disappointed Krieg because he trusted Gin the most. Gin then asked for the Baratie to be spared, which angered Krieg.

Krieg decided to unleash the MH5 poison gas as a last resort. He demanded that Gin remove his mask, considering him no longer part of the crew. As this happened, Luffy tried to stop Krieg but couldn't. Eventually, Gin threw away his mask and Luffy received it.

The poison gas was released, and the chefs from the Baratie escaped by diving underwater, while Krieg's crew used their masks to protect themselves. After five minutes, the gas dispersed, and it was revealed that Gin had given Luffy his mask. Krieg insulted Gin and said he deserved to die by his own hands as his commander.

Luffy was furious and promised to defeat Krieg. He launched an attack on Krieg, who insulted Luffy by comparing him to a foolish monkey. Luffy replied by saying he was a monkey who never gave up.

Krieg attacked Luffy with a barrage of spears from his weapon, but Luffy fearlessly charged through the attack, determined to reach Krieg. To defend himself, Krieg revealed a robe covered in dangerous spikes. Despite injuring his hand on the spikes, Luffy continued his attack and knocked Krieg to the ground.

Krieg then unveiled his final weapon, a massive spear with an explosive tip. The battle caused a lot of destruction, leaving little space to move. Luffy, undeterred, focused on breaking the explosive end of the spear.

Luffy succeeded in knocking Krieg down again. One of Krieg's crewmates suggested that Luffy might be stronger than Krieg, but Krieg silenced him. Krieg combined his shoulder plates to create a powerful "Giant Battle Spear" and slammed it into the ground, causing an explosion.

Luffy was sent flying over the ocean but managed to stretch himself toward a floating platform to avoid falling into the water. However, due to his injuries and the unstable platform, he eventually fell to his knees. Krieg continued his attack, and Luffy had to dodge desperately.

At a critical moment, Luffy managed to grab hold of the lance just before it could strike him. Krieg was enraged and attacked Luffy with his lance, forcing Luffy to let go. He then rammed the lance into Luffy, creating an explosion that sent Luffy flying. Krieg boasted that he was stronger than Luffy.

However, Luffy surprised Krieg by using his foot to break the tip of the spear. Luffy explained that he had hit the tip five times and that with the wide area they were in, he could still win.

Krieg continued to attack Luffy, wanting to execute him for daring to challenge the "Most Powerful Captain" in East Blue. Luffy dodged Krieg's attacks and even hung onto a mast. Krieg sliced the mast, but it didn't hurt Luffy. Luffy threw the mast at Krieg, who destroyed it with fire. Luffy used his special attacks, but Krieg's armor protected him. However, Luffy finally breaks Krieg's armor with a powerful attack called "Gomu Gomu no Bazooka," shattering it into pieces.

Krieg, despite losing his spirit, tried to trap Luffy in an iron net in mid-air, with the ocean below. This would have made Luffy sink and drown, but Luffy had a plan. He used his hands and feet for one last attack. Krieg ordered his crew to shoot at Luffy, but Sanji intervened to protect Luffy. Luffy successfully used a move called "Gomu Gomu no Ozuchi" to smash Krieg's head into the dock, causing him to lose consciousness.

After losing the battle, Krieg briefly stood up in a berserk state, but Gin, his loyal crew member, punched him in the stomach. Gin then left the Baratie with Krieg and the rest of the crew.

Krieg’s Personality

Krieg embodies the characteristics of a ruthless and oppressive military leader. His personality is marked by cruelty, deceit, and arrogance. He has an unwavering belief in his own superiority and is convinced that his massive armada and extensive arsenal of weapons can conquer any adversary. Even when faced with obvious defeat, Krieg refuses to acknowledge his mistakes and instead resorts to unscrupulous tactics, convinced that there must be a trick to overcoming his opponents.

His overconfidence stems from a history of constant victories and an unhealthy reliance on his superior firepower. This arrogance makes him quick to anger, especially when his orders are not followed precisely, leading him to often mistreat his own crew members. Krieg's temperamental nature is a contributing factor to his failed attempt to conquer the Grand Line, as he believed that sheer numbers and weaponry were sufficient for success. His fleet was nearly annihilated by Dracule Mihawk, a powerful swordsman.

Krieg's nickname, "Foul Play," accurately reflects his philosophy of prioritizing victory above all else, even if it means resorting to dishonorable tactics. He dismisses qualities like pride and sympathy as weaknesses and is willing to kill his own crew members who display such emotions, showing a complete disregard for their loyalty. He lacks any sentimental attachment to his crew or ships, readily planning to rebuild his fleet with other pirate crews in the East Blue after losing his previous one.

Furthermore, Krieg's moral compass is questionable, as he attempted to forcibly take over the Baratie restaurant after the chefs generously offered food to his starving crew. He is intolerant of failure and loss, reacting irrationally even when faced with critical injuries, as seen when he demanded a rematch against Luffy.

Krieg's leadership style is rooted in fear, and he rules his crew with an iron fist, demanding absolute obedience to his often unreasonable orders. While some members respect him out of fear, like Gin, others, such as Pearl, share his belief that cunning and trickery are essential for survival in the pirating world.

Krieg’s Appearance

Don Krieg is a large and muscular man with a commanding presence. His most notable feature is his purple-gray hair, which is paired with distinct sideburns. During his encounter with the Straw Hat Pirates, his hair was clipped short and concealed by a thick layer of gauze, possibly due to injuries sustained on the Grand Line. His wanted poster indicates that he once wore his hair long and wild.

Still from the anime.

Krieg's attire is adorned with fur-lined elements, adding to his overall imposing and regal look. The centerpiece of his appearance is his golden armor, which serves as both his primary offense and defense against opponents.

The armor consists of a full-torso carapace, massive shoulder plates adorned with his Jolly Roger symbol, and arm guards. These elements give him a formidable appearance, and the armor itself is loaded with various weapons. Underneath the armor, he wears a brown shirt and covers his hands with fur-lined gloves.

To protect himself from his own deadly MH5 gas, Krieg has a golden gas mask concealed somewhere within his armor. This gas mask is a vital part of his battle attire and allows him to unleash this deadly weapon without risking harm to himself.

On more casual occasions, Krieg hides his armor and massive physique behind regal attire. This ensemble typically includes a fur-lined coat, which can double as a cape when he reveals his armor, worn over a yellow vest adorned with black spots-like motifs. Around his thick neck, he sports a substantial golden chain.

Interestingly, even when preparing for battle and removing most of his clothing, Krieg retains his pants and shoes, as his armor does not cover anything below the waist.

Krieg’s Abilities

Don Krieg was considered the most powerful pirate in the East Blue in terms of military strength. Despite having a lower bounty than Arlong, he commanded a formidable fleet of 50 ships and over 5,000 pirates. His active pillaging and large fleet forced the Marines to view him as a greater threat in the East Blue. However, Luffy commented that Krieg's fleet relied on sheer numbers rather than true power.

Krieg in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Krieg possessed massive physical strength, claiming to be the strongest man in the world (an exaggeration, of course). He could break a man's arm with his grip, withstand cannonballs without flinching, and easily lift and throw heavy objects like the Sabagashira I and the one-ton Great Battle Spear while wearing his golden wootz armor.

As a tactician and strategist, Krieg was sound in his approach. He understood the material value of his subordinates and required them to be in perfect health. He used decoys and disguises to avoid unnecessary battles, such as disguising his flagship as a Marine vessel or dressing up his first mate as himself to distract pursuers. His dishonest and unethical behavior demonstrated his strategic aptitude. Krieg also had knowledge of Devil Fruits and their weaknesses, as he planned to throw Luffy into the water upon witnessing his stretching abilities.

Krieg's most potent weapon was his talent for trickery and deception, earning him the nickname "Foul Play." He would often pretend to beg for mercy, only to strike when his opponents lowered their guard. His fighting style heavily relied on a vast arsenal of hidden weapons and the element of surprise. He rarely named his attacks out loud, instead relying on the shock and awe of his arsenal to overwhelm his adversaries.

Don Krieg's arsenal is extensive and formidable, making him a deadly opponent in combat. His most prominent feature is his golden wootz steel armor, which is bright gold in color and reputedly nearly indestructible. This armor allows him to withstand point-blank bazooka shots without any damage and provides him with remarkable flexibility and mobility. Many of his weapons are integrated into this armor, including:

  • Gun-Barrels: Krieg's armor features ten gun-barrels, with two beneath each shoulder plate and three beneath each waist-flap. He can fire all these barrels in a single motion, enabling him to rapidly gun down numerous enemies.

  • Shoulder-Plate Bludgeons: He can remove the shoulder plates and use them as bludgeoning weapons to enhance his punches.

  • Projectile Launchers: The left shoulder plate contains several projectile launchers, including a dozen rim-mounted ones that fire belt-fed spears in a Gatling gun-like fashion. The central launcher fires Krieg's infamous MH5 shell.

  • Segmented Arm-Guards: These are made of plainer steel and can be raised over Krieg's face for protection. The right arm guard features a small flamethrower with considerable range, while the left arm guard can deploy a weighted metal net to entangle enemies.

  • Poison-Gas Bomb MH5: This is Krieg's most feared weapon. It's an explosive shell containing a highly potent chemical toxin. The impact releases a deadly poison gas that causes immediate organ failure and internal bleeding in those who breathe it. Krieg and his crew carry gas masks as protection.

  • Daisenso (Battle Spear): Krieg's ultimate melee weapon, formed by locking his shoulder plates together. It has a long reach and the spearhead explodes upon impact with any solid surface, causing varying degrees of damage based on the force of impact.

  • Diamond Fists: Beneath his gloves, Krieg wears metal gauntlets with diamonds on each knuckle. Combined with his natural strength, these can shatter objects with ease.

  • Kenzan Mantle (Sword Mountain Mantle): A secondary cape covered with fist-sized metal spikes, it is used for defense in close combat.

  • Pistols: Krieg carries at least two double-barreled pistols, which, when used with his armor's gun array, allow for a rapid rate of fire.

  • Huge Spiked Flail: During his battle with Luffy, he wielded a massive spiked flail on a chain, although he abandoned it after Luffy deflected it.

  • Marble-Sized Bombs: Krieg possesses marble-sized bombs that create powerful explosions when thrown, destabilizing the battlefield.

Krieg’s Relationships

Crew

Don Krieg's relationship with his crew is characterized by fear, control, and harsh discipline. He views his crew as essential for achieving his goals but does not genuinely care for their well-being. Instead, he rules through intimidation, and any form of disobedience or hesitation is met with severe consequences, often leading to death.

Krieg takes immense pride in his role as the captain and expects unwavering obedience from his crew members. He becomes furious when they fail to follow his orders without question, reinforcing his belief that they are obligated to serve him loyally.

Gin, Krieg's first mate, is an example of the crew's loyalty driven by fear. He carries out Krieg's orders, no matter how ruthless, without protest or hesitation. This loyalty is partly due to his intense fear of Krieg, prioritizing avoiding the captain's wrath over his own survival.

Pearl, another member of Krieg's crew, shares Krieg's ideology of foul play being essential for victory and survival. However, Pearl lacks Gin's sense of honor and operates more in line with Krieg's ruthless tactics. Krieg views Pearl as useful but expendable, as evidenced by his willingness to sacrifice himself and Sanji during their confrontation at the Baratie to protect his plans.

Enemies

Dracule Mihawk

Mihawk became an enemy of Krieg when he destroyed Krieg's entire fleet during Krieg's attempt to conquer the Grand Line. However, Mihawk did not consider Krieg a significant threat and claimed that he attacked the crew merely to pass the time. When Krieg attacked Mihawk out of anger, Mihawk effortlessly sliced Krieg's ship and departed without bothering to retaliate.

Marines

Krieg is considered an enemy of the Marines due to his status as a famous pirate with a bounty on his head. In the past, he escalated his pirate career by killing a marine captain and taking over his ship.

Baratie

Krieg initially posed as a customer in need of food when he encountered the Baratie, a floating restaurant. However, his true intentions were to steal the Baratie and use it as his new flagship. When Krieg revealed his plans, the chefs of the Baratie fought against his crew to protect their restaurant.

Straw Hat Pirates

Still from the anime.

Krieg became an enemy of the Straw Hat Pirates, especially Monkey D. Luffy, due to his desire to take over the Baratie and his ambition to become the Pirate King. Initially underestimating Luffy and his crew, Krieg mocked them for their seemingly harmless appearance.

However, after witnessing the abilities of "Pirate Hunter" Zoro and Luffy's Devil Fruit powers, Krieg realized the potential threat they posed. Despite being defeated by Luffy, Krieg was relentless and demanded to continue the battle until he was knocked down by Gin. Krieg also attacked Sanji when he regained his strength, despite Sanji's willingness to help him and his hungry crew, ordering Gin to kill Sanji.
