She and her companion were the Baroque Works frontier agents assigned to eliminate Laboon. They were more skilled than the three other pairs and had previous experience as both agents and bounty hunters.

Vivi was so confident in her fighting skills that she openly attempted to attack Roronoa Zoro before realizing the apparent difference in their physical abilities.
