Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) in One Piece

Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) in One Piece

The captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, better known by his alias "Whitebeard," Edward Newgate, was hailed as the "Strongest Man in the World", and following the death of Gol D. Roger, he was known to be the "Man Closest to One Piece." Newgate a.k.a Whitebeard was an Emperor of the Sea before his death.

During his prime, Whitebeard competed with Gol D. Roger, and after Roger's death, he came to be regarded as the strongest man in the world. He also had the second-largest bounty of any pirate in history and the highest active bounty at the time of his death.

Newgate was an orphan from Sphinx Island before assembling his crew. He was a well-known member of the fabled Rocks Pirates as a sailor, and later in life, before dying in the Summit War of Marineford, he became one of the Four Emperors who dominated the New World.

Whitebeard’s Personality

Before he became Whitebeard and took command of his ship, Edward Newgate was a happy and carefree person. Due to his upbringing as an impoverished orphan, Newgate had a tremendous desire for a family, which he considered the greatest value one could possess. Although his fellow pirates found this wish strange and amusing, he was not ashamed of it.

Whitebeard’s confident smile.

He appeared overconfident and fearless because of his dominance over the sea, reputation, and threatening power. He initially gave the impression that there was no reason to be concerned about his choice and that he would ignore any advice offered. However, he was a lot more thoughtful than he first looked to be. His actions, which at first glance appeared to be the consequence of reckless, brash bravado, were motivated by essential factors.

Whitebeard was deeply conscious of his mortality and that he was nothing more than a single man. The young people held the key to the future, and he understood that their lives were far more significant than his own. As a result, he had no qualms about giving his life to ensure the security of the people he called his children. Whitebeard shared Gol D. Roger's viewpoint that a child shouldn't be held accountable for their parent's crimes. He also believed that a man might choose any course in life if he did not look back and regret it.

Despite his ferocious reputation, Whitebeard was a kind man who took in many people from various origins as foster children. Marco claimed that Newgate's fatherly behavior and genuine love for the Whitebeard Pirates were the primary factors in their dedicated commitment to their leader. In contrast to the tyrannical Kaidou and Charlotte Linlin, Whitebeard, one of the Four Emperors, used his position and authority for charitable reasons.

Whitebeard's crew.

Whitebeard was kind and merciful towards his crew, going to extraordinary lengths and incurring necessary expenses to save those in grave danger. Naturally protective of his family, Whitebeard did not tolerate the thought of a crewmate joining another crew, particularly a competitor crew. In fact, the idea of briefly removing himself from just one of them enraged him. Even if he did agree to do it, he did so grudgingly and with a lot of annoyance.

Depending on their nature and behavior, Whitebeard was quite selective when picking members for his crew. This sense mainly resulted from Whitebeard's time spent with the Rocks Pirates, whose members had a violent and edgy relationship, which had a bad effect on him. High moral standards were one of Whitebeard's defining characteristics; he never forgave a crewmate's death at the hands of another and held that a man could not survive without some sort of honor code.

Whitebeard seemed to take pleasure in discussing the past. He had many happy memories of his time as a pirate captain. Still, he was not proud of his prior affiliation with the Rocks Pirates because of the lack of camaraderie among the crew; as a result, he rarely mentioned those times.

Whitebeard enjoyed drinking, despite his ill health at the time, to the point that bringing and sharing a drink with him was considered enough of a respectful gesture to start a conversation. However, based on the nature of these chats, this only sometimes entailed his full participation.

He shared the same distinctive laugh as other One Piece characters, which was "Gu ra ra ra ra." His chuckle is reminiscent of the Devil Fruit he ate, the Gura Gura no Mi.

Whitebeard’s Appearance

With a height of 666 cm, Whitebeard was an unusually tall man. He was, nevertheless, proportionate, unlike other large-sized people. He was pretty muscular and had a long, plowed face with numerous wrinkles around his eyes due to his old age. His chest had many scars. When he used his quake-based abilities, his bicep muscles appeared to expand. He had a tattoo of his own Jolly Roger on his back, just like all his crew members did. While his eyes appear brown in the manga, they are yellow in the anime.

He covered his head with a black bandanna and dressed in a white captain's coat that hung loosely from his large shoulders and had his Jolly Roger insignia. He always went bare-chested, with a dark pirate sash around his waist and light, loose trousers tucked into his tall, black boots. Due to age-related health difficulties, Whitebeard frequently used oxygen while not engaged in combat and was attached to many medical sensor units.

When he was younger, his signature mustache wasn't there, and he sported a black bandanna and an open dark gray waistcoat. Later in life, he developed the noticeable crescent-shaped mustache that gave him the nickname "Whitebeard". When he was 52, he sported a black bandana with red and black stripes over his long, flowing blond hair and a white and yellow pirate cap with his jolly roger.

He wore a white sleeveless shirt with the word "Power" printed on it when he was younger. He was also wearing a white bandanna and shorts. He had scars and scrapes from his attacks that were bandaged.

Whitebeard’s Abilities

Whitebeard was one of the most formidable pirates in history. At his peak, he was one of the few capable of taking on Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, and engaged him in a drawn battle over days. Before Roger's death and the commencement of the Great Age of Pirates, he was already regarded as the "Strongest Man in the World" due to his extraordinary strength.

After Roger's death, Whitebeard became one of the Four Emperors, the four most ruthless pirates in history and lords of the New World. He was regarded as the "Closest Man to One Piece" and the sea's king who presided over the "throne" and the title of Pirate King among them. Whitebeard had the second-largest bounty in recorded history (after Roger's) and the biggest bounty, at around 5 billion among his rivals.

People from all over the sea were aware of Whitebeard's strength and appeared to think that he could end the world if he wished. Few people would be brave enough to oppose him or any one of his crew. After his death, the world descended into anarchy, with Whitebeard's regions no longer regarded as dangerous (despite his crew being alive) and the Marines being declared absolute winners.

Physical Strength & Tactical Skills

Whitebeard's physical strength, which surpasses even a giant, earned him the moniker "strongest man in the world". He could attack big opponents by jumping relatively high and moving at tremendous speeds despite his enormous size.

Whitebeard put's off Akainu's lava attack with his breath.

Whitebeard's old age and heavy drinking may have contributed to his severe health issues. He used to drink sake by the barrel while surrounded by nurses, using oxygen tubes, and being connected to medical tubes and life support systems when he wasn't engaged in battle. Despite his health problems, he was regarded as the world's most ruthless and formidable pirate.

Despite numerous life-threatening wounds, including having a portion of his head burned off, Whitebeard could continue fighting thanks to his incredible physical grit and pain tolerance. This further demonstrates his extraordinary stamina and endurance since he fought on despite taking a great deal of damage throughout the battle. Even when he was elderly, badly hurt, and deprived of his Devil Fruit and Haki abilities, he could take down mighty enemies.

Whitebeard dies standing after receiving multiple gun shot wounds.

Whitebeard suffered 465 injuries overall during the Summit War, including 267 sword wounds, 152 gunshot wounds, 46 cannonball wounds, and a piece of his head blown off. He also took two of Akainu's magma blasts and one of Kizaru's laser beams. The Blackbeard Pirates brutally attacked Whitebeard as well. In contrast to other characters, he managed to die standing even after suffering so much damage in his already weak condition.

In addition to his great strength, Whitebeard was a superb commander and a master of military strategy. Even amid fierce battles, he could quickly adapt to diverting circumstances.

Devil Fruit

Whitebeard consumed the Gura Gura no Mi, a Devil Fruit of the Paramecia variety that gave him the ability to cause tremors and produce tremendous shockwaves. Within the Paramecia class, this power is considered the strongest Devil Fruit ability.

Whitebeard breaks air using his Devil Fruit abilities.

He could send shockwaves across the air that were so intense they split the air itself. These shockwaves allowed him to kill a single victim with horrifying efficiency, including Giants, or instantly defeat many opponents across a vast area. Because of the enormous sheer force of his shockwaves, he could also use them defensively to effortlessly repel incoming blasts. Aside from that, his physique could produce powerful vibrations that were powerful enough to break ice.

He could tilt, rupture, and shake the actual landscape. Given the correct conditions, he could use his quake powers to hit the general region, causing significant earthquakes and enormous tsunamis. His earthquakes would significantly disrupt the local environment, destroying structures, leaving deep craters in the ground, and forcing ground debris upward into new rock formations. He could even "grab" the surroundings and tilt them.

Whitebeard's attack changes entire landscape in and around Marineford.

Whitebeard could concentrate his seismic bubbles around his hands and feet, enhancing his physical attacks. His melee assaults would become more devastating due to the modest yet potent shockwave released when these quake bubbles clashed with something. He could also use seismic bubbles to substantially increase the catastrophic power of his polearm by having its blade in one. Soon after Whitebeard's demise, Blackbeard used unexplained tactics to take his power.

Haki & Weapons

Whitebeard was one of the few people who had the mastery over all three types of Haki. His Haki abilities decreased at old age compared to when he was at his prime. Still, even with worsened health conditions and old age, he was feared across the world as being the strongest man, capable of destroying the world.

Whitebeard held Murakumogiri, one of the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, a colossal naginata. Even in his old age, he had incredible sword skills. Murakumogiri allowed him to defeat a significant number of strong opponents. His childhood spear was made of a simple knife connected to a pole, and it was much smaller and less skillfully crafted.

Whitebeard’s Relationships

Crew

Whitebeard's crew

Every single member of Whitebeard's crew, as well as the crews he led, were his "sons." His faithful devotion to his crew and subordinate crews dates back to before he ever had a crew when he said that the one thing he desired more than anything was a family. The crew affectionately referred to him as "Pops" or "Old Man".

Marco: Marco was the closest thing Whitebeard had to a right-hand man in his entire crew. Like the rest of his crew, Marco was brought to tears by Whitebeard's death, and he followed his captain's last order to lead Luffy to safety.

Marco also started the Payback War against Blackbeard, rallying the remaining Whitebeard Pirates to hunt down the crew's traitor and the person mainly accountable for the deaths of Whitebeard and Ace, but he was unable to exact justice. Later, Marco traveled to Sphinx Island, where Whitebeard resided, and settled down as a local doctor.

Portgas D. Ace: Whitebeard learned of Portgas D. Ace when he was just starting as a pirate captain, fascinated and amazed by the youngster's quick rise to fame. When Ace and his crew were defeated, Whitebeard offered Ace the option to become a member of his family as his son.

Whitebeard's first encounter with Ace.

Ace finally grew to appreciate Whitebeard so much that he saw him as a true father figure. Ace's admiration for Whitebeard and his honor as a member of the Whitebeard Pirates both grew over time. After Ace died, Whitebeard decided it was time to unleash the total destructive power of his Devil Fruit, and he soon turned his attention to Akainu, Ace's killer.

Kozuki Oden: Oden's strength and craziness were clear to Whitebeard from their initial encounter and the subsequent fight. After Oden passed a gruelling endurance test, Whitebeard finally decided to accept him as a crew member and offered him the adventure of a lifetime. At first, he opposed it since he thought Oden was dangerous and incapable of surrendering to anyone.

Whitebeard's trust and bond grew dense with Oden over time, and he decided to make Oden the commander of Second Division. Oden's position as a commander was kept vacant for a long time until Ace proved to be the best fit.

Izou: Izou initially had an antagonistic relationship with Whitebeard because of the torture and degrading treatment Izou's master, Oden, had endured. When Oden was formally invited to join the Whitebeard Pirates, the tension lessened, and Izou stayed put for Oden's benefit. Izou preferred to remain with the Whitebeard Pirates when Oden joined the Roger Pirates because he finally became fond of his new crew and became a full-fledged member. His eventual promotion to commander of the crew's sixteenth division showed that Whitebeard respected him as a fighter and a leader.

Subordinate Crews

Subordinate Crews

The Whitebeard Pirates operated in the New World with numerous subordinate crews in addition to their own 1600-person crew. Each pirate captain was a notorious pirate who had established a reputation in the New World. There appeared to be at least 43 crews under Whitebeard.

Friends & Allies

Jinbe

Whitebeard was revered as a hero by many Fish-Men, especially Jinbe, for his duty as a guardian of Fish-Man Island. Jinbe frequently stated that he owed the Emperor a great degree of gratitude. Jinbe formally notified Sengoku of his retirement from the Warlords when he and the other Impel Down escapees landed in Marineford.

Monkey D. Luffy

After hearing about Luffy from Ace and Shanks, Whitebeard appeared to appreciate him somehow. Whitebeard had come to respect Luffy after witnessing his ferocious tenacity. He even ordered Marco, his top commander, to serve as Luffy's bodyguard throughout the battle since he "would not have forgiven him" if the boy had perished.

Whitebeard ordered all his men to completely support Luffy with all their strength as the fight continued. His respect for Luffy grew as he saw Luffy's true ability. Luffy also respected Whitebeard since he believed that anyone Ace admired was honorable. It is hinted that he thinks Luffy is the guy Gol D. Roger has been waiting for and that he would be the one to uncover One Piece in his last words to Blackbeard and Sengoku before dying.

King Neptune

King Neptune has known Whitebeard for a long time. Whitebeard shielded Fish-Man Island from slavery due to their relationship, which began when they first drank together. Though it is unknown how they met, it is known that they have been friends for a long time because Neptune was very helpful to Whitebeard when he was younger.

Territories

Many areas were under the protection of Whitebeard. The majority of them appeared to be on the verge of pirate raids. They were kept safe and secure because they were "owned" in his name. Thus, the residents were grateful to him for doing so; as a result, these territories were immediately susceptible following his death. While Foodvalten was taken by Brownbeard, Big Mom, at least one other emperor, took over Fish-Man Island.

The most important to Whitebeard among his recognized territories was his country, Sphinx. After creating a peaceful village for the villagers, Whitebeard committed most of his wealth to helping Sphinx.

Enemies

Gol D. Roger

Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard after battling each other.

Whitebeard had immense regard for Gol D. Roger despite their rivalry. They engaged in numerous duels throughout their lives. Shortly before he passed away, Roger visited Whitebeard on an island for what appeared to be a pleasant drinking session. Roger even offered to tell Whitebeard where Laugh Tale was located, and when the pirate asked him about D.'s Will, Roger gladly told him about it.

Crocodile

Crocodile once suffered a devastating defeat against Whitebeard in the New World, shortly after rising to the rank of one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. This set back Crocodile's aspirations to become Pirate King for a while.

Crocodile attempting to assassinate Whitebeard at Marineford.

Crocodile wanted to exact revenge on Whitebeard. At Marineford, he attempted to kill Whitebeard, but Luffy prevented him from doing so. Crocodile claimed that the Emperor hardly resembled the guy who had completely defeated him years earlier. He appeared disturbed about Whitebeard's power weakening with age. He still began fighting for Whitebeard's side at the conflict's conclusion because he preferred Marines not to come out on top.

Marines

Whitebeard had mutual regard for Sengoku and Monkey D. Garp. They were among the few people still living today who had firsthand knowledge of the seas during Roger's time.

Whitebeard standing against Marines to rescue Ace.

He didn't treat any of the younger Marines, not even the strong admirals, with much respect, calling them all "brats". But since Sakazuki killed Ace, Whitebeard was furious with him and severely hurt him.

Marshall D. Teach

One of Whitebeard's older crew members was Marshall D. Teach, commonly known as Blackbeard, who joined the crew at twelve. Whitebeard swiftly permitted Teach to join after hearing his claim that he was an orphan with nowhere else to go.

Whitebeard vs. Marshall D. Teach

Teach eventually became Whitebeard's biggest enemy for killing Thatch and facilitating Ace's capture and execution. Before his death, Whitebeard attempted to take his life, claiming that the only person he did not consider his son was Blackbeard. Whitebeard also called Blackbeard an arrogant fool who never deserved to be his crew member.

Whitebeard publicly stated that Blackbeard was unfit to succeed Roger just before he died. His last thought was guilt for allowing Teach to hurt his foster family. Blackbeard took control of Whitebeard's kingdoms after his death, assumed his position as one of the Four Emperors, and stole his Devil Fruit abilities.

Emperors

Shanks

Shanks and Whitebeard.

Even though they were enemies, Shanks greatly respected Whitebeard and was eager to help him by stopping Emperor Kaidou from getting to Whitebeard so that he could travel unchecked to Marineford. After Whitebeard died, Shanks saved his crew and their other supporting crews and laid Whitebeard and Ace to rest dignifiedly.

Kaidou

Whitebeard and Kaidou were formerly members of the Rocks Pirates. They split off after the incident in God Valley, formed their own crews, and eventually rose to the position of Emperor. Whitebeard was one of the few strong people Kaidou knew who could stand up to him. Because he knew Kaidou was a strong and fierce pirate, Whitebeard decided against attacking Wano Country to avenge Oden's death, knowing it would result in many losses.

Others

Edward Weevil

According to Edward Weevil, he is the biological child of Edward Newgate. It is unknown whether he is genuinely Whitebeard's biological son, as many people have doubts about this assertion. Weevil expresses a desire to kill Emperor Marshall D. Teach in retaliation for Whitebeard's death, showing that, at the very least, he genuinely believes that he is Whitebeard's son.

Shiki

Whitebeard with Shiki

They were formerly members of the Rocks Pirates. Whitebeard and Shiki appeared to get along well; Shiki regarded Whitebeard as a strong man capable of seizing Roger's control of the sea. Whitebeard, aware of the Golden Lion's tendency for plots, appeared to be mindful that Shiki had something planned despite being largely annoyed by his babblings at the time.

Buckingham Stussy

Edward Weevil's mother, Miss Buckingham Stussy, is Whitebeard's self-described lover. Her assertions regarding Weevil and her link to Whitebeard are currently unconfirmed. Thus it is impossible to know for sure. She was, however, a fellow crew member of Whitebeard some forty years ago.

Rocks Pirates

Rocks Pirates

For a brief period in his life, specifically up until the God Valley Incident, when the crew met its downfall, Whitebeard was a member of the Rocks Pirates. Whitebeard rarely mentioned his time as a member of his old crew, giving the impression that he did not think much of them. He dismissed Oden joining the Whitebeard Pirates by comparing him to the other Rocks Pirates. He cited the daimyo's wild, rebellious temperament as difficult to manage.
