History

Past

Bartolomeo and Desire were friends since they were kids and they planned on going to sea together and reaching the top. Later on, his dreams changed after he saw Luffy at Loguetown and he decided to help Luffy become the Pirate King. This made Desire set off to sea without him. Before all this, Bartolomeo was a mafia head who had 150 towns under him. After he saw Luffy at the Marineford War he decided to set sail.

Dressrosa Arc

Bartolomeo took part in the tournament at the Corrida Colosseum to compete for the Mera Mera no Mi. Bartolomeo defeated a Vice Admiral before he left to fight in the tournament. Back at the Colosseum, Luffy bumps into Bartolomeo, who is excited to meet his idol. Bellamy mentions that he is heading for the exit and if Luffy wants to follow him, he could find the exit.

Bartolomeo asks Luffy why he would give up winning the Mera Mera devil fruit to which Luffy replies that his friends are more important. Bartolomeo tells Luffy that he'll get the fruit for him and at that moment a man walks past Bartolomeo and says that the Mera Mera fruit can't go to Luffy. Luffy turns around to see the man is actually Sabo and that is when Bartolomeo and Sabo meet. Later on, Bartolomeo teamed up with Robin and the other gladiators to defeat the Donquixote Pirates. Before the Straw Hats leave, Bartolomeo pleads his allegiance to them.

Zou Arc

During a hail storm, Bartolomeo told his crew that they do not have a navigator as they usually called Gambia’s grandmother to help them with their problems but she used to give them useless advice and they needed to rely on the Straw Hats to protect them. After finding the Thousand Sunny, Bartolomeo and his crew said goodbye to Luffy and his crew.

Levely Arc

After Luffy’s Totto Land adventure, Bartolomeo acted like a journalist and interviewed him.

Wano Country Arc

When the Red Hair Pirates were discussing whether they should or should not make landfall to see Luffy, Shanks spoke with Lucky Roux about a recent problem in their area. Roux then remembered that Bartolomeo had burned their flags and replaced them with Luffy’s.

Personality

Bartolomeo can be vulgar and laid back which makes him unpopular among people. He can be provocative and also mocks his enemies, like the time he pretended to be afraid of Hack when he was going to attack him, only to defeat him with his devil fruit abilities. He can get angry easily but does not care what anyone else thinks of him, when he declared to Dagama that he does not really give a damn about what the audience thinks about him.

Bartolomeo does not like to hold a high opinion of people and can be bold and daring in his actions. He really cares about his crew and despite his destructive nature, he can restrain his murderous rage to a certain extent. He also respects the Straw Hats and is really dedicated to them which made him also become a pirate. Bartolomeo gets really annoyed when anyone mocks the Straw Hats and gets excited whenever he meets them. He also has honor as he saved Bellamy from Dellinger.

Bartolomeo’s abilities, strengths, and fighting style

Bartolomeo is really strong as he was able to defeat Vice Admiral Maynard. He has a great amount of durability as he was able to take in two explosions by Gladius. He is physically strong and is really skilled in hand-to-hand combat. He even made his own barrier which he enhanced according to Luffy’s abilities.

Bartolomeo’s special abilities

Devil Fruit

Bartolomeo ate the Bari Bari No Mi which is a Paramecia-type devil fruit that allows him to create a protective barrier by crossing his fingers. His barriers are indestructible which can actually damage fortresses. He can only make one barrier at a time. His barriers are very versatile and they can be used for the offense by launching them forward. He can also morph his barrier into solid things like stairs.

Weapons

Bartolomeo uses a dagger and also carries around a fake bomb which he uses for scare tactics. He also has access to real explosives.

Relationships

Crew

Bartolomeo, Gambia, and Maynard have a strong sense of loyalty to his crew. Bartolomeo's crew began as a small group of criminals who became friends as children in a remote location and evolved into a gang. They respect the Straw Hats and join him in toasting their journey to Zou.

Gambia

Since Gambia beat up Maynard for knocking out his shipmate, Bartolomeo appears to genuinely care about him.

Straw Hats

Bartolomeo has developed such immense respect for the Straw Hats that he would risk his own safety for them. When fighting Gladius, he took the shots that were for Luffy and later injured himself trying to protect Robin. When it appeared that Gladius had killed Robin, he openly cried in sorrow, but he was relieved that she was okay. Bartolomeo has also demonstrated a thorough understanding of Straw Hats. Even though the World Government tried to cover up their involvement in Arabasta, he somehow knew about it. Even though the newspapers claimed that the attack at Enies Lobby was random, he knew the real story of what happened there even though he didn't know Sogeking's true identity until he met Usopp. Bartolomeo gladly parted ways with Luffy's crew after giving them a lift to Zou.

Monkey D. Luffy

Bartolomeo admired Luffy since Loguetown when he boldly announced that he would become Pirate King while he was about to be executed and was later spared by a lightning bolt. Since that time, he has grown to be a huge fan of Luffy's and has kept up with all the news about him and his crew, up until the Marineford War, which motivated him to resign as the leader of the mafia he led and take up a life as a pirate. He even made the trip to Dressrosa just to get the Mera Mera no Mi to give to Luffy as a gift.

World Government

Bartolomeo is the enemy of the World Government since he is an infamous pirate and a mad rookie.

Marines

Bartolomeo hates the Marines because he is a pirate. He also struck back immediately, knocking the Marine officer when Gambia had been hurt by Vice-Admiral Maynard.

Donquixote Pirates

Bartolomeo protected Bellamy from Dellinger, and this is the reason the Donxiquote Pirates turned against him. The young pirate officer threatened him with revenge as a result of his interference, but he was unfazed by the threat. Bartolomeo decided to fight with Doflamingo's crew during the Birdcage game, and he ended up killing Gladius in the process.

Shanks

Despite Bartolomeo's admiration for Luffy, it appears that he is not aware of his relationship with Shanks. By burning the Red Hair Pirates' flag and continuing to cause chaos throughout their area, he declared war on them.

Bellamy

There is a unique friendship between Bartolomeo and Bellamy. When they were in the B Block bout, the two were initially rivals, and Bartolomeo appeared to enjoy throwing Bellamy to the ground. When the angry pirate officer told Dellinger to kill Bellamy, Bartolomeo stepped in to save him and protected him with his Devil Fruit powers until the officer left. Bartolomeo replied that they were "friends" because they were fighting on the same battlefield when Bellamy asked why he had saved him, and that he would defend him if necessary.

Sabo

When Bartolomeo said he wouldn't let Luffy have the Mera Mera no Mi, Sabo did not like it. As he was unaware of his relationship with Luffy, he was prepared to confront the latter but was relieved when Sabo revealed that he is Luffy's other brother. Bartolomeo then treated Sabo with great respect. Sabo felt Bartolomeo's passion for the Straw Hats is annoying despite his admiration for him as it partly originates from his desire to help Luffy. Bartolomeo refused to betray Doflamingo and helped the revolutionary instead when he put a price on Sabo's head after trapping everyone on Dressrosa in his survival game.

Cavendish

Cavendish initially posed a threat to Bartolomeo due to his participation in the competition for the Mera Mera no Mi and his desire to assassinate Luffy at the time. They defeat the Donquixote Family and they worked together in Doflamingo's Birdcage survival game. While they work well together to fight, as seen in their battle with Gladius, when Bartolomeo allows Cavendish to enter and exit his barrier so he can attack Gladius and escape his attacks, they frequently quarrel over their respective attitudes.

Trafalgar D. Law

Regardless of his relationship with Luffy, Bartolomeo treats Law with his usual hatred. He was open about throwing his reward poster away, and when Law requested for food, he wouldn't help until he said it was for Luffy.
