At some point, Johnny and Yosaku, two individuals with a history of bounty hunting, were sitting in a bar. They noticed that a notorious bandit named Billy, who had a bounty of Beli 5,000,000, and his gang were also at the bar. Johnny suggested they avoid any trouble, but Zoro, a skilled fighter who happened to enter the bar, declared he would pay for his meal by claiming a bounty.
This prompted Billy to attack Zoro. Johnny and Yosaku were surprised by Zoro's abilities and wondered if he was the famous pirate hunter they'd heard about, but Yosaku was skeptical.
As Zoro defeated Billy and claimed his bounty, Johnny decided they couldn't let someone else take their target. He confronted Zoro, stating they had first rights since they'd spotted him initially. Zoro explained he was striving to become the world's greatest swordsman and that bounty hunting was just a means to earn money for food. He allowed Johnny and Yosaku to take Billy's bounty and left.
After securing the bounty, Johnny questioned Yosaku about why he became a bounty hunter. Johnny revealed that their village was attacked by bandits when they were young, and he aspired to be like the bounty hunters who protected them. Encountering Zoro reminded him of the reasons behind his choice.
Shortly after, they heard a commotion from the town and learned that a gang led by Dick was causing trouble. They arrived at the scene where Dick's gang was looting, and alongside the townspeople, watched in concern. When a child bravely confronted Dick, Johnny's anger flared, and he wanted to take action, but Yosaku tried to restrain him.
When the child confronted Dick, Johnny saw a reflection of his younger self in the brave kid. This sentiment motivated Johnny to take action. He charged at Dick, identifying himself as a bounty hunter. In response, Dick offered to give them money to leave, but Johnny and Yosaku declined, emphasizing their commitment to justice.
Dick initially laughed at them but stopped when they mentioned they had turned in a criminal worth Beli 5,000,000 that very morning. He then revealed that he was Billy's sworn brother and became angry.
However, Yosaku and Johnny were swiftly defeated by Dick. They clarified that they were the ones who claimed Billy's bounty but someone else had actually defeated the bandit. Despite Dick mocking them, they attempted to attack him but were easily overpowered. Dick prepared to finish them off with his bazooka, but they were saved when Harry intervened. Dick decided to leave, but Yosaku and Johnny swore they would either defeat him or die trying.
Unfortunately, Dick's gang attacked them and inflicted severe injuries, leaving them unable to stand. Dick's henchmen were about to finish them off when Zoro arrived.
Zoro asked to borrow their swords to reclaim their target, and at that moment, Johnny and Yosaku realized that Zoro was the pirate hunter. Zoro then effortlessly defeated Dick's henchmen, and Johnny and Yosaku were astonished by his strength. They asked Zoro if they could team up, and he agreed. This marked the beginning of their alliance.
While on the Going Merry, Usopp and Monkey D. Luffy decided to practice firing the ship's cannon. They accidentally blew up a nearby island where Yosaku was resting, injuring him. Johnny reacted by boarding the Going Merry and attacking the ship.
However, Luffy intervened and prevented Johnny from causing further harm. During this encounter, Johnny learned that Roronoa Zoro, the swordsman he knew from their time as pirate bounty hunters, had joined a pirate crew, which was a surprising revelation.
After the incident, Johnny brought the injured Yosaku aboard the Going Merry. Nami diagnosed Yosaku with scurvy and treated him, showing her medical skills. Realizing that the Straw Hat Pirates needed a cook to avoid a similar situation in the future, Johnny decided to repay the favor. He directed the Straw Hat Pirates to the Baratie, a floating restaurant where they might find a suitable cook.
As they approached the Baratie, a Marine ship was also heading there. Johnny and Yosaku were concerned about being mistaken for pirates, but they were recognized by Marine officer Fullbody, who identified them as small-time bounty hunters. Offended by the remark, Johnny and Yosaku attacked Fullbody but were quickly defeated.
While at the Baratie, Nami pretended to befriend Johnny and Yosaku, but she eventually tricked them by stealing their treasure and boat. She lured them into letting their guard down by pretending to change her clothes and asking them to turn around. Once they turned around, she pushed them off the Going Merry and made her escape with their ship.
In response to Nami's betrayal, Luffy ordered Johnny, Yosaku, Zoro, and Usopp to chase after her. They were shocked to witness Zoro's defeat at the hands of the powerful swordsman Dracule Mihawk. Although they considered intervening to help Zoro, Luffy insisted that they continue their pursuit of Nami.
With Zoro injured, Johnny and Yosaku pulled him out of the water, and they set out to catch up with Nami aboard their own boat. This left Luffy behind to protect the Baratie.
Once Johnny and Yosaku figured out that the Going Merry was heading towards Arlong Park, they remembered Nami's suspicious behavior and connected it to Arlong. This made them realize that Nami had a connection with Arlong. Yosaku left for the Baratie to inform Luffy about Nami's destination, while Johnny, Usopp, and Zoro continued to the island.
They saw fish-men on the island and decided to abandon their ship. They tied up Zoro to prevent him from rushing into danger because of his injuries. However, Johnny ran off when he spotted another fish-man in Gosa Village, leaving Usopp on his own.
Later, Johnny saw Nami pretending to kill Usopp and believed her, thinking she had actually killed him. Yosaku and Johnny overheard Nojiko telling Nami's story and decided to go after the Arlong Pirates to make up for misjudging Nami. But they were easily defeated. They decided to wait for Luffy to arrive and didn't allow anyone else to enter Arlong Park to avoid causing trouble for the people of Cocoyasi Village.
During the battles between the Straw Hat pirates and the Arlong Pirates, they gave Zoro their swords to replace the ones broken by Mihawk. This helped Zoro defeat Hatchan. After Arlong's defeat, they thanked the Straw Hat crew for their help but continued their lives as bounty hunters.
Johnny and Yosaku faced constant failures as bounty hunters. So, they decided to become fishermen in Cocoyasi Village.
In a later story, they are seen fishing from a boat near Cocoyasi Village, living their new lives as fishermen.
Johnny is a happy-go-lucky guy, similar to his friend Yosaku. He's generally the more serious and sometimes the more honorable of the two, but he can act silly when he's with Yosaku. Johnny is a bit dimwitted and often gets things wrong, like mistaking "Hawk-Eyes" for "Drunk-Eyes" at the Baratie or not knowing how to cure Yosaku when he's sick.
He tends to talk about close fights he's had with much stronger opponents, like Luffy or Arlong, which can make him seem a bit arrogant. However, he's also very brave, like when he tried to attack the powerful Mihawk when he was fighting Zoro. Johnny also stands up for his beliefs and is willing to fight for them, as seen when he fought against Dick the Mountain Whale.
On the flip side, Johnny has a cowardly side, as he tied up Zoro to prevent him from charging into Arlong Park and was willing to leave him behind to escape with Usopp. But when pushed, he can be brave enough to oppose Arlong and his crew, even though he knows it could lead to trouble for the villagers.
Despite his bravado, Johnny and Yosaku couldn't defeat the Arlong Pirates, so the Straw Hat Pirates had to handle it themselves. Johnny also has a habit of saying that he only lost fights by a very small margin, which might be a source of pride for him.
Johnny is of average height with a light tan complexion. He's a constant wearer of sunglasses and sports a distinctive black tattoo on his left cheek, which reads "sea." His black hair is kept short, and he's rarely seen without his trusty sword.
Johnny's eyebrows seem to be perpetually pointed downwards, giving him a scowling appearance, even when he's smiling. His typical attire consists of a blue hooded jacket over a purple undershirt, tan pants, sturdy boots, and a wristwatch on his left arm. Notably, his arms have become more muscular after the timeskip.
Johnny is a swordsman, like a samurai, but he isn’t very strong compared to many others. When he tried to take on the Arlong Pirates with Yosaku, they were easily overpowered.
It's not clear if Johnny has any special sword techniques. The only time Johnny showed real bravery was when he attacked the Straw Hat pirate ship, the Going Merry, because Luffy and Usopp were attacking a big rock he was on. Johnny didn't stand a chance against Luffy, but he did some damage to the ship. They later fixed it, and the fight stopped when Zoro recognized Johnny.
Johnny isn’t very experienced with sea travel, as shown when Yosaku got sick with scurvy. However, he does know a lot about the world, like information about the Seven Warlords of the Sea and the Arlong Pirates. He can be a bit clueless at times, like when he said "Hawk-Eyes" had been reported at the Baratie, when it was actually "Drunk-Eyes."
Johnny's weapon is one of the two Nakiri Swords, a kind of sword called a dadao. It has a red handle and a circular handguard. The blade of the sword gets wider as it goes away from the handle. He doesn't seem to have a proper sheath for it, so he hangs it on his waist with a piece of cloth.
The two of them were part of the same bounty-hunting team alongside Zoro before their team disbanded. Despite their parting, their bond remained strong. Yosaku, much like Johnny, is friendly and appreciative of help, and this shared personality trait likely contributed to their close relationship.
Their loyalty to each other is evident in their unwavering support for Zoro, even after Zoro's defeat by Dracule Mihawk. Johnny and Yosaku are like brothers, and their camaraderie is a central aspect of their characters in the series.
Zoro's strength and skills as a swordsman undoubtedly earn him the admiration of Johnny, but their relationship goes beyond that. The exact reasons for Johnny's profound respect for Zoro are not explicitly revealed in the series, but it's clear that there is a strong bond between them.
Even after Zoro's defeat by Dracule Mihawk, Johnny and Yosaku did not hesitate to protect and support him, showcasing their loyalty and their belief in Zoro's abilities.
When Nami cures Yosaku of scurvy, Johnny quickly befriends the Straw Hat Pirates. Their respect for Zoro extends to the entire crew, as they address them with honorifics like "Aniki" (brother) or "Nami-aneki" (sister), indicating the strong sense of fraternity they feel toward Zoro and his associates.
