A few years ago, Yosaku and Johnny were in a bar when they noticed a man with a bounty of Beli 5,000,000. Yosaku wanted to go after him, but Johnny thought it was not worth their time. However, when Zoro entered the bar and mentioned claiming a bounty, Billy, the man with the bounty, attacked Zoro.
Yosaku and Johnny were surprised and checked the wanted posters to see if Zoro was a criminal. They wondered if he could be the famous pirate hunter, but Yosaku noticed that Zoro only used one sword, not three like the pirate hunter.
Yosaku and Johnny decided to confront Zoro about stealing their bounty, but Zoro explained that he claimed bounties to feed himself on his journey to become the greatest swordsman. Yosaku initially laughed at this goal, but Zoro was determined. He let Yosaku and Johnny keep the bounty and prepared to leave.
After claiming Billy's bounty, Yosaku celebrated, but Johnny seemed down. Johnny asked Yosaku why he became a bounty hunter, and Yosaku explained it was to earn a living. Yosaku revealed that he admired the bounty hunters who protected his village from bandits. Johnny realized he had similar aspirations as a child.
Shortly after the encounter with Zoro, Yosaku and Johnny heard commotion in town caused by a gang led by a man named Dick. They went to see what was happening and witnessed Dick and his gang pillaging the area. Johnny wanted to help a kid who was fighting Dick, but Yosaku was initially hesitant. Johnny, however, was determined to be a champion of justice.
When Johnny confronted Dick and mentioned his desire to be a champion of justice, Yosaku was surprised. Dick laughed at their declaration, but Yosaku and Johnny revealed that they had recently claimed a bounty worth Beli 5,000,000, which belonged to Billy, Dick's sworn brother. This infuriated Dick.
Yosaku and Johnny attempted to fight Dick but were easily defeated. They explained that they were only the ones who had claimed the bounty, and someone else had actually defeated Billy. Dick's taunts angered them, and they vowed to take him down or die trying. However, they were attacked by Dick's gang, badly bruised, and unable to get up.
Just as Dick's henchmen prepared to finish them off, they were saved by Zoro. Zoro asked to borrow their swords to claim the bounty, and Yosaku and Johnny realized that Zoro was the pirate hunter they had heard of. Zoro easily defeated Dick's henchmen, leaving Yosaku and Johnny in awe. They asked Zoro if they could join forces, and he accepted, forming a partnership.
Yosaku and Johnny encounter the Straw Hat Pirates when they accidentally shoot at the island where Yosaku and Johnny are resting. Yosaku suffers from scurvy, and Nami diagnoses and treats him. This incident helps the Straw Hats realize the importance of having a cook on their crew to prevent food-related illnesses. Yosaku's illness was due to eating rotten fruit.
Yosaku and Johnny guide the Straw Hats to the Baratie, a floating restaurant, to find a cook for their crew.
During the Baratie arc, Johnny and Yosaku stay on the Going Merry to rest. Nami shows interest in their wanted posters. However, Nami tricks them and steals their treasure and boat. She pretends to change her clothes and asks them to turn around, but when they do, she pushes them off the Going Merry and takes the ship. Johnny and Yosaku then tell the Straw Hats what happened.
They witness Dracule Mihawk's arrival at the Baratie and see Zoro easily defeated by him. Johnny and Yosaku leave with Usopp and the injured Zoro to pursue Nami.
Yosaku later returns to the Baratie in the mouth of a wild panda shark shortly after the Krieg Pirates leave. He informs them that Nami is heading to a dangerous place and they need help from Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hats. After Sanji agrees to join Luffy's crew, they depart for Arlong Park.
While en route to Arlong Park, Yosaku explains the backstory of Jinbe, a former Warlord of the Sea, and his connection to Arlong. He clarifies that Jinbe allowed Arlong to go to the East Blue in exchange for becoming a Warlord.
This decision led to Arlong's tyranny in East Blue, including the establishment of Arlong Park, their destination. Yosaku and Johnny deduce that Nami is heading to Arlong Park due to the ship's direction and her fixation on Arlong's wanted poster.
Luffy and Sanji use Momoo, a creature they defeated, to tow themselves to Arlong Park quickly. However, Yosaku and Johnny become fearful when they realize that the Straw Hats intend to confront Arlong to rescue Nami. They decide to retreat for their safety.
Upon learning about Nami's tragic past and why she joined Arlong's crew, Yosaku and Johnny change their minds and attempt to challenge Arlong's crew. They are defeated but encourage the villagers not to sacrifice their lives needlessly.
During the battle against Arlong, Yosaku and Johnny lend Zoro their swords to replace the ones broken by Mihawk at the Baratie, enabling Zoro to defeat Hatchan. After Arlong's defeat, they express gratitude to the Straw Hat crew for their help but continue their bounty-hunting careers.
Johnny and Yosaku faced constant failures as bounty hunters. So, they decided to become fishermen in Cocoyasi Village.
In a later story, Johnny and Yosaku are seen fishing from a boat near Cocoyasi Village, living their new lives as fishermen.
Yosaku is an emotional and sensitive person who can be deeply moved by stories of hardship. He may even cry when hearing about struggles. He desires attention during conversations and can become frustrated when he feels ignored. While he has some general knowledge about the world, he may lack finer details and can sometimes be responsible for misunderstandings.
Similar to Johnny, he tends to avoid dangerous situations, but this fear can be forgotten when distracted by food or emotionally touching stories. When motivated, he can be brave and stand up against threats, as seen in his confrontation with Arlong's crew to protect villagers. Yosaku and Johnny both have a prideful quirk, claiming they only lose fights by a very narrow margin.
Yosaku typically sports a black shirt, a green coat, and distinctive red headgear. He's often seen wearing plaid yellow boxer shorts over his unshaven legs and dark shoes. Yosaku, like his partner, also carries a sword and occasionally holds a cigarette.
In the post-timeskip period, Yosaku has shed his coat, appearing shirtless. This reveals a prominent kanji tattoo on his back that reads "Big Catch." His physique has notably become more muscular.
Yosaku is a swordsman and uses one of the two Nakiri Swords, which is a sword with a red handle and a circular guard. The blade becomes wider as it extends from the hilt.
However, they are not particularly strong. For instance, when they tried to take on the Arlong Pirates by themselves, they were easily defeated.
They are not very experienced with sea travel, as Yosaku fell ill with scurvy during their journey. However, they do have some knowledge about the world, including information about the Seven Warlords of the Sea and the Arlong Pirates.
Yosaku was able to recognize Momoo, a Grand Line monster, when it confronted their boat, showing some level of experience. They are not perfect, though, and have made mistakes, such as incorrectly reporting the name of "Hawk-Eyes."
The two of them were part of the same bounty-hunting team alongside Zoro before their team disbanded. Despite their parting, their bond remained strong. Yosaku, much like Johnny, is friendly and appreciative of help, and this shared personality trait likely contributed to their close relationship.
Their loyalty to each other is evident in their unwavering support for Zoro, even after Zoro's defeat by Dracule Mihawk. Yosaku and Yosaku are like brothers, and their camaraderie is a central aspect of their characters in the series.
Zoro's strength and skills as a swordsman undoubtedly earn him the admiration of Yosaku, but their relationship goes beyond that. The exact reasons for Yosaku's profound respect for Zoro are not explicitly revealed in the series, but it's clear that there is a strong bond between them.
Even after Zoro's defeat by Dracule Mihawk, Yosaku and Johnny did not hesitate to protect and support him, showcasing their loyalty and their belief in Zoro's abilities.
When Nami cures Yosaku of scurvy, he quickly befriends the Straw Hat Pirates. Their respect for Zoro extends to the entire crew, as they address them with honorifics like "Aniki" (brother) or "Nami-aneki" (sister), indicating the strong sense of fraternity they feel toward Zoro and his associates.
