Pappag’s History

Approximately eight years prior to the series' beginning, Pappag and Camie were part of a gathering of individuals who offered their signatures in support of Queen Otohime's petition.

Hatchan's Sea-Floor Stroll

Pappag was first introduced when a sea boar spat him and a mermaid named Camie out. They soon became friends with Hatchan. However, Hatchan later traded Camie and Pappag to the Macro Fish-Man Pirates for a map.

Pappag felt betrayed by Hatchan and wanted Camie back. Hatchan eventually rescued Camie, and after that, Camie and Pappag helped Hatchan set up a takoyaki stand.

Sabaody Archipelago Arc

While traveling on the ocean, Pappag and Camie got separated from Hatchan and ended up being swallowed by a sea king. Monkey D. Luffy, who was sailing nearby, saved them when he struck the sea king and sent them flying onto the Thousand Sunny.

Pappag scolded Camie for selling takoyaki to thank their saviors instead of giving it to them for free.

When Camie found out that Hatchan was captured by the Flying Fish Riders, Pappag and the others went to the Riders' base to rescue him. But they realized it might be a trap, and some of their allies hesitated to help Hatchan when they found out who he was.

When the Straw Hats found out that Hatchan was from the Arlong Pirates, they initially didn't want to save him. Pappag scolded them for not caring, and feeling abandoned, Pappag and Camie tried to rescue Hatchan themselves but ended up in trouble with the Flying Fish Riders.

Eventually, the Straw Hats decided to help save Pappag, Camie, and Hatchan with Luffy's assistance. They were rescued from the Flying Fish Riders.

Pappag and Camie were reunited with Hatchan, and after a battle with Duval was resolved, they rewarded the Straw Hats with the takoyaki they promised.

They then guided the Straw Hats to the Sabaody Archipelago, where the crew needed to coat their ship for their journey to Fish-Man Island. Pappag, Camie, and Hatchan joined the Straw Hats in this adventure and toured the archipelago using bon chari for transportation. While having fun, they also witnessed a darker side of Sabaody when a slave named Dias tried to escape from World Noble masters and got injured in the process.

As they continued their journey to find the mechanic Rayleigh, they entered the shadier parts of the archipelago. They met Hatchan's old acquaintance, Shakuyaku, who told them that Rayleigh wasn't at her bar but could be found elsewhere on the archipelago. Shakky also warned them about nine dangerous pirates with bounties over 100,000,000 that they should be cautious of.

They decided to check Sabaody Park, where they thought Rayleigh might be. Instead of focusing on their search, they got caught up in the park's attractions and fun. While enjoying themselves, Camie was kidnapped by Peterman and his Hound Pets gang, who planned to sell her into slavery.

Pappag blamed himself for not protecting Camie, but Luffy assured him they would find her. With Duval's help, they located Camie at an auction house in Grove 1. They planned to buy her at the auction quietly, but a World Noble named Saint Charlos immediately bid a huge amount of money for her.

Camie was sold to Saint Charlos, and Pappag started to panic. Just as Camie was sold, Luffy and Zoro burst into the auction house to rescue her. In the chaos, Pappag saw Hatchan being shot by Charlos when his fish-man identity was revealed.

Amidst the confusion, Luffy punched Charlos in the face for what he did to Hatchan, causing panic in the auction house. Zoro cut open Camie's fish tank, but her collar was still attached.

Shalria, Charlos' sister, tried to shoot Camie, but Rayleigh intervened and knocked her out. Rayleigh, the coating mechanic, and a giant who was supposed to be sold in the auction arrived to save Pappag, Camie, and the others.

With the mechanic's help, Rayleigh removed Camie's collar safely. They escaped the auction house and went to Shakky's bar. The Straw Hats and Rayleigh bid farewell to Pappag, Camie, Hatchan, and Shakky as they left the bar. Camie worried about the Straw Hats' safety, but Pappag, Hatchan, and Shakky reassured her that they would survive if they had the strength and determination.

Post-War Arc

Pappag was later seen on the Thousand Sunny with Camie and Hatchan. They discussed the places on Fish-Man Island that the Straw Hats should visit. Pappag remembered his promise to introduce Brook to the Mermaid Princess.

During the Timeskip

During the timeskip, Pappag became a famous designer of the Criminal brand of clothing and lived in the upscale Gyoverly Hills section of Fish-Man Island. While he and Camie didn't live together, they stayed in touch, and Camie occasionally delivered clams to him.

Fish-Man Island Arc

After the Straw Hats arrived at Fish-Man Island, Pappag met Brook at the Mermaid Cafe. He was overjoyed to see them again and invited Luffy, Usopp, and Camie to his estate. They traveled on a fish taxi to get there.

While Luffy and Usopp explored Fish-Man Island, Pappag told Brook about Vander Decken IX, the descendant of the legendary Vander Decken. He explained that Decken IX had been harassing the Mermaid Princess with threatening marriage proposals.

Pappag also shared information with Luffy about the different patterns of offspring from a fish-man and a mermaid. They encountered a candy factory with Big Mom's jolly roger on it, and Pappag mentioned that Big Mom was now the protector of Fish-Man Island.

Finally, they reached Pappag's house. fter the Straw Hats learned that there was a Crimin clothing store on the first floor of Pappag's estate, they were surprised to find out that Pappag was the president and famous designer of the "Criminal Brand Company." Pappag had plans to open shops all over the world.

When Nami complained about the high prices in the store, Pappag offered the Straw Hats anything they wanted for free. They happily emptied the store, much to Pappag's dismay. As they left the store, they heard a commotion outside and found that King Neptune had arrived to meet them. Pappag and Camie were shocked by his presence in the lower waters and were astonished when King Neptune invited the Straw Hats to his palace.

They rode on Megalo to the palace, where Pappag scolded Luffy and Nami for not showing proper respect to King Neptune. When Brook asked about Pappag's claim of being best friends with the Mermaid Princess, Pappag hushed him and gave an evasive response.

Inside the palace, they were amazed by its grandeur. After Luffy wandered off in search of food, Pappag worried about what he might be doing in the sacred land.

However, things took a serious turn when they received word about the mysterious disappearances of mermaids from Mermaid Cove and Madame Shyarly's ominous prediction. The palace guards took action against the Straw Hats, and a battle ensued. Pappag was surprised to see Usopp becoming more reliable during the fight.

During the chaos of Hody's attack on Fish-Man Island, Pappag stayed with Zoro and the others at the Ryugu Palace. He was the only one among them who wasn't captured. When Brook tried to communicate with Pappag in his spirit form, Pappag ran away in fear, mistaking him for an evil spirit. However, he later realized it was Brook and helped Zoro, Usopp, and Brook escape by locating and retrieving Zoro's swords, which allowed Zoro to break out of the cage they were trapped in.

Pappag and the group met Sanji at the palace entrance and made their way to Gyoncorde Plaza. During the preparations for the upcoming battle, Pappag was seen in the Soldier Dock with Nami, Usopp, and Chopper. He suggested they leave the area because it was too crowded, but Usopp told him to get off the Soldier Dock. Pappag then mentioned his fear of going outside.

After the Brachio Tank V emerged from the Thousand Sunny, Pappag was seen in the cockpit with Nami and Usopp, questioning why a shipwright would build weapons like that instead of ships.

After the battle for Fish-Man Island came to a close, Pappag was spotted standing on top of the Thousand Sunny. He then joined the banquet at Ryugu Palace and even danced with the Medaka Mermaid Quintuplets. Later on, he accompanied the Straw Hats when they went to check on Shirahoshi.

When the Minister of the Right inquired about the tower that had been cut in half, Pappag attempted to tell him it was Zoro's doing, but he received a slap from Zoro who advised him to let the minister blame it on the thief.

Once the festivities concluded, Pappag, along with Camie and Hatchan, bid farewell to the Straw Hat Pirates.

During the Pirates Festival, Pappag was actively involved in promoting Hatchan's takoyaki stand, using a bullhorn to draw attention to it and attract customers.

Pappag’s Personality

Pappag is a unique and somewhat quirky character with a distinct personality. He can communicate fluently in human language, which is an unusual trait for a starfish. This is because he initially believed himself to be human when he was young, and by the time he realized he wasn't, he had already learned to speak like one. This linguistic ability allows him to interact with humans and other characters effectively.

He possesses musical talent and can play the guitar and sing skillfully. Despite his starfish appearance, he doesn't let it limit his ability to engage with the world.

Pappag exhibits a sensitive side, often becoming temporarily depressed when he is ignored or not taken seriously, especially when trying to explain certain things. This sensitivity hints at a more emotional aspect of his personality.

He is also shown to be somewhat judgmental or appalled by the Straw Hats' casual and irreverent way of addressing King Neptune, suggesting that he values respect and decorum in certain situations.

However, Pappag has a mischievous side as well. He lied about being friends with Princess Shirahoshi, possibly for his own amusement or to create a certain impression.

Pappag’s Appearance

Pappag, as seen in the digitalized One Piece manga.

Pappag is an orange starfish with distinctive features. His body appears to be stitched along its outline. His face is positioned in the center of his body, and he sports a hat reminiscent of a tam hat or rastacap.

In the game "Ocean's Dream! - Oceans of Dreams," Pappag's hat has an incorrect color scheme, which might be a deviation from his usual appearance.

Following the two-year timeskip, Pappag undergoes a change in his attire. He starts wearing sunglasses with the Criminal brand logo on the rims, adding a touch of style to his overall appearance. Additionally, he sports a small bow tie, which further contributes to his unique look.

Pappag’s Abilities

Pappag is a multi-talented entrepreneur known for creating, owning, and managing his own fashion brand. He exercises complete control over his inventory stock, allowing him the authority to offer discounts or even give away entire clothing store supplies at his discretion.

His brand enjoys considerable popularity and recognition, making him a prominent figure in the world of fashion. Some Fish-Man Islanders even speculated that King Neptune's invitation to the Straw Hat Pirates was linked to their association with Pappag.

Interestingly, despite the typical absence of a voice box in starfish, Pappag has somehow found a way to convey his voice effectively. He is fluent in the human language and possesses the ability to not only speak but also sing, showcasing his unique and impressive vocal talents.
