Metal Lee was born and brought up in Konohagakure alongside Rock Lee's friend's children Shikadai Nara, Inojin Yamanaka, and others. At the Konoha Ninja Academy entrance ceremony, he saw Boruto Uzumaki crashing the train on the stone face of Seventh Hokage (Naruto Uzumaki).
Metal Lee, during shurikenjutsu practice, was throwing shuriken on the right target, but panicked when Shikadai and Inojin praised him and threw the shuriken way off the target. Later he, with other students, was given the punishment to repair the stone face of Seventh Hokage. He tried to impress others with his skill to repair made blunders, which led to damaging the stone face even more.
Shikadai then observed his difficulty and suggested Metal get over it. His remarks deeply disturbed Metal, who left sadly. The next morning, Metal was shrouded in a dark mist. He quickly attacked Shikadai and simultaneously asked if he should fight back, increasing Metal's fury. They were able to free Metal Lee from the possession of a mysterious shadow that only Boruto could see. Shikadai said sorry for his comment, which he said to Metal Lee. Metal forgives him, and then they become closer friends.
Shino Aburame allowed the class to work on non-shinobi tasks like normal people and split them into teams. Metal asked Inojin to join him and choose the fire department. When Metal Lee tried to help the fire department put water through the hose on fire, he got nervous and splashed the water around the area rather than pointing it on just the fire area.
Later, when the masked man kept on hurting people by possessing them with a mysterious possession shadow, Shikadai Nara and Boruto Uzumaki came up with a plan. But when the masked guy appeared, Metal Lee tried to chase him when he was running away although he failed to catch him.
After some weeks, Shino changed the team pairing, and Metal Lee was paired with Boruto and Mitsuki. In the flag-capturing event, Shikadai told Metal Lee that everyone was watching, and because of that Metal Lee got nervous, and then Chocho Akichimich smashed him down. Later Metal Lee helped Denki learn how to climb on the tree using chakra control.
Metal Lee took the Genin exam and passed the written test. In the second round, they had to take the bell from Kakashi Hatake and touch the chest buzzer the other Academy teacher wore. But in the end, they could not get a bell from Kakashi Hatake. Still, Kakashi passed them all because they all showed teamwork and courage. After becoming a genin Metal Lee was placed in team 5 alongside Iwabee and Denki.
Team 25 was assigned to assist the other genin teams to stop the Byakuya Gang, who were robbing the citizens around Konohagakure. However, with help from a chunin or other more senior shinobi, the genin were allowed to combat the Byakuya Gang.
Team 5 had an encounter with Byakuya Gang but were immediately on the back foot, and they had to retreat, but in an encounter, Metal's arm got injured. Later, Metal Lee with his team entered the chunin exam and while Team 5 easily cleared the first round of exams, they fought against team Shinki in the second round and were beaten.
Rock Lee decided to teach Metal the Eight Gates as Metal struggled with his anxiety. But he delayed the training and told Metal that he can't master the Eight Gates if he only relies on pointless luck charms for confidence. Then Metal met Might Guy, who could see Metal's internal conflict. Metal began to doubt his belief in his trinkets after learning how Guy handled his sadness over his injury and continued to move ahead.
Rock Lee challenged Metal to a match, stating that there would be a big audience present and that if Metal failed to land at least one strike, he would never receive instruction for the Eight Gates. Metal, against his father, took off all of his ornaments and battled through the jeers and looks of the audience, which in fact improved his performance.
Finally, Metal opened the first Gate, enabling him to hit Rock successfully and secure victory. Metal eventually discovered self-worth as both Guy and Rock were proud of him for overcoming his difficulties. They all three hugged together and cried.
Yurito was in a panic when Metal and his squad bumped into him while on patrol during the lockdown. As the chief of Medical Security, Yurito would have sent someone else to report such an act. Thus, Udon saw through his claim that someone had attacked a recovering guard and they rushed to obtain help.
When Yurito realized he had been exposed, he kidnapped Denki but the genin escaped with a flash bomb. Udon became aware that he was under genjutsu as the team's genin attempted to subdue Yurito. A C1 Explosive Clay burst out of the man's flak jacket as he realized what was happening, killing Yurito immediately.
Metal spent Parent and Child Day with his father, Rock. Inojin, Shikadai, and their respective fathers were also with him. Later, he and Rock entered a challenge to see who could eat the most. But Metal's fear of being observed soon led him to throw up, disqualifying the squad. After getting well, Metal and his father continued their training for the rest of the day.
After Deepa defeated Team 7, Metal and his squad went to see how Boruto was doing in the hospital. Metal was particularly concerned about his friend’s safety, but they were shocked to see how both were at ease and joyful. While the rest of the group was happy, Iwabee started to worry that their buddies had lost their will to be shinobi.
Metal and his comrades were shocked to discover Boruto and Sarada had secretly left the hospital when they went to check on them. Iwabee came to the new assumption that Mitsuki's treatment was why Boruto and Sarada sought revenge, but Sakura Haruno told them that they went on a secret mission under Konohamaru Sarutobi.
Team 5 went to see Boruto after discovering that he had been admitted to the hospital following a match against Shojoji. They encountered a patient named Natt at the hospital, causing problems for the personnel. After learning that they were shinobi, Natto asked them to acquire Orochimaru's autograph on his Extreme: Shinobi Picture Scrolls trading card. They originally said no, but after hearing about Natto's upcoming surgery, which he dreaded, they accepted.
A Konoha jonin, standing in for Yamato in, was watching Orochimaru and told them to be very careful after learning his location from the Hokage's office records. They accidentally came across Suigetsu and tried to battle him, but they were quickly overpowered. While doubting their motives, Orochimaru broke up the battle and autographed the card. Natto got the card back from Team 5, who acknowledged that they were afraid to do it but that one had to be brave, which motivated him to undergo surgery.
Naruto Uzumaki once again announced the Re-Chunin exam as the last time Momoshiki Otustuki and Kinshiki Otsutsuki attacked the village during the exam, and the exam was canceled. Metal Lee, with Denki and Iwabee, passed the first round, but in the second round, Metal Lee lost due to his social anxiety.
Denki was able to reach the final round of the Chunin exam. To help Denki prepare for the final round of the chunin exam, Metal Lee went to the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team's facilities to test the combat suit he created. Denki defeated Metal while he was having practice season with his new suit. Later Metal Lee celebrated Denki and Wasabi Izuno's promotion at the Thunder burger shop.
Denki informed Metal and Iwabee of their first B-rank task, delivering brand-new robotic puppets to aid in gold mining at Dot Island in the Land of Water since they were growing bored with their monotonous missions. Metal assisted with the puppets' assembly after Denki instructed him to do so.
Two bandits made their presence known to the miners, stole some gold, and then imprisoned them inside the mine. Denki dug a route with the puppets to prevent a collapse, allowing them to flee. Team 5 battled the bandits while using them to find the stolen gold.
Iwabee used his Earth Release to prevent their Water Release attack, giving Denki time to modify the puppets and seize their boat. Iwabee disabled the boat's engine and Metal and took on the robbers together. The mining boss congratulated them, and Denki reminded his staff that they still had work to do since the puppet developers had shown up.
The Konoha research team was also taken prisoner when the Funato Clan raided the island later. Team 5 was forced to retreat and wait for a chance to act. As a precaution, Metal set up explosive traps. Eventually, Sarada and Mitsuki, who were on a mission to aid Team 5, discovered Team 5. As they caught up with one another, they devised a plan to free the captives, with Team 5 in charge of securing a ship for their departure.
Metal assisted Denki in keeping Funato soldiers off the ship while he gained possession of it. He and Iwabee celebrated their accomplishment on the assignment, which turned out to be risky.
Iwabee warned them of a powerful Chakra Cannon from the adversaries' fortress ship on the way back to their meeting place with Kagura and the others. Kagura's team turned the Chakra Cannon back on the fortress after they narrowly avoided the initial shot at their spacecraft. Team 5 was startled to see members of the New Seven Ninja Swordsmen after picking up Kagura and the others.
Before their return to Kirigakure, Sarada reassured them that they were technically allies. Taiki's death was discovered the following morning. Kyoho, who was found trying to wipe Kabutowari's blood but had previously had a rage but had no recollection of it, came under suspicion. He asserted his innocence.
Metal Lee asked Hebiichigo's views before teaming up with him to search the ship. She convinced him that Kyoho wouldn't intentionally kill a bystander. He argued that he would have felt the same in her shoes and vowed to establish Kyoh's innocence.
When a witness came forward with incriminating evidence, Kawaki spotted inconsistencies. Suspicious of how quickly word of the murder had spread, he then set up a trap by pretending Kyoho had died in order to reveal the real culprit. After revealing himself, Kobasoza was pursued to the engine room, where he committed suicide to harm the engine.
Kajiki, a renowned shipbuilder, eventually found them. Kajiki, unable to fix the engine, pulled the ship back to his port for proper repairs. Metal volunteered to assist with the repairs there. Later that evening, the Funato Clan raided the island and used leeches to capture numerous people. Hebiichigo was saved when Metal started knocking them out. The Funato attack had been stopped by daybreak.
They learned the sea-fight was a diversion to launch a sneak strike at Kirigakure while the majority of its men were away after deciphering a coded message found on the Funato. On the Funato's route, Kagura led them to his childhood home, intending to protect the community and stop their forces.
Metal contributed to the destruction of two bridges, forcing Funato into a vulnerable position and tearing his suit. Hebiichigo offered to fix it but was confused by his optimistic attitude.
Hebiichigo left the following day and Metal spotted it while hiding from Funato spies. He discovered her leaving the community and urged her to stay, stressing that doing so would turn her into a wanted person. She knocked Metal out because she didn't think she would make it through the fight. He returned to the village after waking up and reported Hebiichigo's desert.
Team 5 was dispatched to the ravine to protect the town after setting up traps, but they quickly returned when a snake Mitsuki sent warned them that there were problems. They arrived in time to use a landslide to deflect Funamushi's onslaught. Hebiichigo's defection had made him unhappy, so his joy at her return to defend them was bittersweet.
Everyone retreated to the village, where the noncombatants were evacuated and the water sources were blocked to prevent Funamushi's jutsu. When the Funato arrived, Metal partnered with Hebiichigo by creating a wire floor with her on which he could attack the Funato from above. As Funamushi drained the blood of his own men to use his jutsu, other Funato trapped Metal with water in the path of the jutsu.
When Kagura was weakened by cutting through Funamushi's attack, he was held hostage by Funamushi, so they all dropped their weapons. They watched in shock as he stabbed Kagura in the chest. Furious with Funamushi, they all fought back. He initially fought them off with his water release but Boruto activated his Kāma (Karma) and landed a Rasengan, causing Funato to retreat.
Kagura's wound was too severe, and he died after asking everyone to protect the village. After Kagura's funeral, everyone agreed to follow Sarada's instructions. The latter decided to wait for the village, as Funamushi would indeed return to take revenge, and decided to fulfill Kagura's last wish.
After they all came back, they found out that there was a food shortage as the food storage had been destroyed, so Team 5 searched for food and tracked down any Funato movements going on. Everyone had to limit supplies because they could not gather very much. In order to give the shinobi a greater chance of protecting them, the villagers refused to eat, but the shinobi decided to let them eat instead.
When Metal checked on Hebiichigo, she told him about her upbringing in a trash bucket and how she came to be a shinobi. He made her aware of her skill for sewing when she thought her only talent was killing.
The kids that went with Denki and Iwabee on their trip later returned by themselves, admitting that the Funato had kidnapped them. Despite the doubts of Kawaki and Buntan, Metal was certain that his teammates were still alive. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that he had grown more nervous about the upcoming battle with Hebiichigo since he wanted to win to see his teammates again.
In response, Hebiichigo stated that she had only ever fought for herself in a fight, which was the only reason she had survived this far. The Funato launched a second, stronger attack the following day with fewer warriors.
When it started to rain, Funamushi used his Water Release: Raging Jellyfish to cause chaos all over the place. When Metal protected Hebiichigo as she immobilized his water jellyfish with Nuibari, everyone else was preoccupied with Funamushi, and Boruto was sure that landing a close-range blow would end the fight.
Before Boruto defeated him and Buntan killed him, he could escape and execute a lethal attack on Hebiichigo. Metal regretted not protecting her when she passed away, but she expressed gratitude for his care.
With Team 7's assistance, Metal continued to look for Denki and Iwabee two days later, but they were unable to find them; instead, they found an injured Funato soldier who they brought back to interrogation. The following day, Denki and Iwabee came back by themselves and explained their unlikely idea as to why Funamushi didn't kill them or use them as part of the negotiations.
That evening, after Team 7 returned from assisting Boruto in fighting off an attack from Gokai and Kobuna seeking to exact revenge on Funamushi, Metal persisted in his fight against the Funato over the loss of Hebiichigo. When the soldier explained that Ikada was Seiren's younger brother, he was shocked.
Metal was torn between wishing to avenge Hebiichigo and wishing to help his friends. Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki wished to get to Chojuro to end the war. When the swordsmen attacked them, Iwabee and Denki protected Team 7, allowing them to escape.
Metal learned from a fisherman that Team 7 boarded the main Funato warship and informed his teammates, Buntan and Kyohō. The group sped off to aid Team 7 and arrived in time to watch Boruto sacrifice himself to the Funato. Ikada had a change of heart and ended the war after seeing Boruto's sacrifice. Metal Lee and others returned to Konoha after ending the war.
