Neptune’s History

In his earlier years, King Neptune was a soldier who sought revenge for his fallen comrades, which led to the deaths and capture of many humans. During his prime, he became close friends with Whitebeard.

After becoming the king of Fish-Man Island, Neptune welcomed the Roger Pirates and showed them the Poneglyphs at the Sea Forest.

While his wife, Otohime, was alive, she urged the people of Fish-Man Island to unite with humans. Neptune supported her efforts and instructed the Minister of the Left to protect her.

When Fisher Tiger had a meeting with Neptune and Otohime after an adventure, Neptune asked about what he had seen. Tiger's response was simply "humans." News of Fisher Tiger's attack in Mary Geoise reached the palace, and Otohime told Neptune about the battle cry she heard from his heart.

After Fisher Tiger's death, Neptune received a letter from Jinbe explaining the true story. Neptune believed that Tiger had no other choice. Otohime understood what Tiger's heart was saying during his last visit.

Jinbe later visited the palace and discussed his invitation to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea with Neptune. Jinbe believed it would strengthen the bond between species and support Otohime's cause, and Neptune agreed, hoping it would bring cheer to his wife.

One day, a World Noble named Mjosgard arrived on Fish-Man Island in a damaged ship, causing an uproar among the Fish-Men. They spared him and treated his wounds. When Otohime, Neptune's wife, wanted to go to the surface with Mjosgard to show that it was safe, Neptune objected but eventually agreed, as he understood the importance of proving the surface's safety to their people. He waited for a week to keep his children's spirits up.

Otohime returned safely and collected signatures from the citizens, which filled Neptune and his children with joy. However, their happiness was short-lived as Hody Jones assassinated Otohime in broad daylight.

Hody framed a human pirate for the crime, causing everyone on Fish-Man Island to believe that a human was responsible. Neptune, filled with rage toward the human, locked himself in the Hard-Shell Tower to control his anger. As he grieved his wife's death, Neptune struggled between his duty as a king to honor Otohime's dream of peace with humans and his desire for revenge as a husband.

Before Otohime's funeral, Neptune's children told him about love letters sent to Shirahoshi, one of their daughters. Neptune read one of these letters, a marriage proposal from Vander Decken IX. He instructed his children not to attend the funeral due to potential threats.

Neptune did attend Otohime's funeral in the Sea Forest and watched Fukaboshi's speech through a visual broadcast. When Vander Decken IX threatened Shirahoshi's life, Neptune's anger boiled over, and he had his three sons form an army to capture him.

Fish-Man Island Arc

When Shirahoshi's pet shark, Megalo, went missing and Shirahoshi was inconsolable, Neptune didn't know how to help. Eventually, the shark returned to the palace, and Neptune looked forward to meeting the ones who had freed Megalo, the Straw Hat Pirates. When he learned that Monkey D. Luffy was at Pappag's mansion, Neptune personally traveled there to meet him. He invited Luffy and his crew to his palace.

The Straw Hats, Camie, and Pappag rode on Megalo, with Neptune riding on Hoe. Neptune explained that Megalo was his daughter's beloved pet, and he thanked them for rescuing it. Luffy said it was a coincidence, but he was happy to help. Neptune had sent his sons to get the Straw Hats, but when they didn't return, he went himself.

Neptune was excited about the banquet's menu and wanted it to start soon. He mentioned that one of the Straw Hats, Zoro, was already at the palace, but he had started drinking and wouldn't wait for the others. Neptune thought Zoro's name was "Zori" but got corrected. He informed the Straw Hats that his soldiers would find the rest of their crew and bring them to the castle.

Nami asked Neptune why Fish-Man Island was so bright even though it was 10,000 meters below the surface of the ocean. Neptune explained that Fish-Man Island was built on the sea floor, where there was light. The roots of a tree called the Sunlight Tree Eve reached down to the sea floor and transferred light to the island.

As they approached the palace's entrance, Neptune rang the doorbell, and someone inside said they would open the gate. In the corridor beyond the gate, Neptune excitedly shouted, "Let's go!" and announced his name as a battle cry. Luffy commented on the cool palace, and Neptune replied that it was his castle and told everyone to enjoy themselves.

Inside the castle, two men scolded Neptune for going out on his own. Neptune promised to be more careful in the future. The Straw Hats watched as the king was chastised, realizing he was being treated like a child. Neptune explained that he had brought the people who saved Megalo from the Kraken and asked about his daughter, Shirahoshi.

The men informed him that something had upset her again recently. Neptune got angry, blaming them for not providing proper protection for her. One of the men apologized and promised to do better next time. The two men were the Minister of the Right and the Minister of the Left. The Minister of the Right apologized for scolding the king in front of the guests and said they had an important message from Fukaboshi.

Upon hearing about the mysterious disappearances of mermaids from Mermaid Cove and Madam Shyarly's ominous prediction, the palace guards and staff decided to take action against the Straw Hat Pirates. Some guards were overpowered by Nami, Usopp, and Brook.

The Minister of the Left pleaded with Neptune to use his power against the pirates, but Neptune didn't want to act solely based on a prediction. He tried to subdue the pirates, using his trident to attack, but Zoro intercepted him and easily blocked his attack.

Later, Neptune and his ministers, along with the castle guards, were found chained up. Neptune admitted that he couldn't fight effectively due to a strained back and aging. He apologized for not being prepared. When Neptune's sons returned, they couldn't enter the castle as the entrance was the only way in. Zoro then spoke with Fukaboshi through Den Den Mushi, and Neptune informed Fukaboshi that they were dealing with the pirate worth Beli120,000,000.

Neptune heard sounds coming from Shirahoshi's tower and realized his daughter was in danger. He asked if there were guards by her room, and he was told they were all tied up with him. Neptune ordered the Straw Hat Pirates to ensure Shirahoshi's safety. When the guards protested, Neptune said that dire situations require sacrifices.

He angrily instructed the Straw Hats to go to the northeast part of the palace where the tower was located. When Zoro questioned why they should take orders from a hostage, Neptune became even angrier and warned them that if anything happened to his daughter while he was incapacitated, he would pursue the pirates relentlessly.

Brook and the Minister of the Right went to Shirahoshi's room and discovered that she was missing, having already left with Luffy and Megalo. When they informed Neptune about this, he looked stunned and started crying out, demanding that the Straw Hats return Shirahoshi. Usopp explained that they didn't kidnap the princess, and Brook mentioned that he only saw Luffy and Megalo leaving Shirahoshi's room.

Neptune correctly guessed that Shirahoshi had been hidden inside Megalo, even though others found the idea absurd, and the palace guards laughed at it. When Hody Jones and Vander Decken IX arrived at the palace, King Neptune accused Decken of kidnapping the princess. Decken realized that Shirahoshi had left the palace and hurried after her. Neptune tearfully begged the Straw Hats to stop Decken and offered them anything.

Hody Jones then attacked, causing the palace to flood. Neptune protected some of his soldiers by taking hits. Zoro cut his chains, declaring the hostage deal void since they had been injured. Before everyone was submerged, Usopp and Brook freed the palace guards, and Zoro told Neptune to take his crewmates to safety.

Neptune ordered his guards to let Hody Jones take the palace, saying they needed to regroup with Fukaboshi to prepare for another battle with the New Fish-Man Pirates. Zoro, after wounding Hody, went with Neptune, Usopp, and Brook to find an escape route.

Neptune created a vortex to clear a path, and the ministers and palace guards escaped. However, Neptune's back gave out, putting him, Zoro, Usopp, and Brook in a dangerous situation. Hoe arrived to save them, but Hody, energized by an Energy Steroid, stopped Neptune with one hand, and they were all captured by the New Fish-Man Pirates.

Neptune remained chained as Hody Jones addressed the citizens of Fish-Man Island through a visual broadcast, explaining his plan to rule the kingdom and announcing Neptune's imminent execution at Gyoncorde Plaza in three hours.

As Hody transported Neptune to the plaza riding Sea Beasts, the citizens cried out to their king, but he was powerless to respond. When Hody suffered an overdose of Energy Steroids, Neptune pointed out the dangers of relying on the drug excessively.

He was later tied up at the execution site in Gyoncorde Plaza, saddened by the defeat of his soldiers. When his sons arrived to rescue him, he cautioned them to be careful, as all the pirates had taken Energy Steroids.

The princes fought valiantly against the officers but were ultimately defeated when the officers also took Energy Steroids. They were then chained alongside the king. Fukaboshi apologized for their failure, but Neptune assured him that the strength of the New Fish-Man Pirates was built on lies.

After Jinbe, Shirahoshi, and Megalo were captured and brought to the plaza, Hody gathered all his subordinates. However, Madam Shyarly interrupted him and predicted that Straw Hat Luffy, not Hody, would be the one to destroy Fish-Man Island.

In a fit of anger, Hody struck Shyarly and boasted about his power. He then revealed that he was the true assassin of Otohime. This revelation shocked Neptune, his sons, Jinbe, the citizens, and the lower-rank subordinates. Hody explained that the human pirate was merely a scapegoat. Neptune was furious, but Hody injured him with a Water Shot to the chest.

Hody went on to gloat about killing Otohime right in front of Shirahoshi, but she revealed that she had known the truth all along. Megalo had witnessed it and informed her in secret. She kept it to herself, honoring her mother's wish of holding no hatred for the killer. Hody ridiculed Shirahoshi for her kindness, calling it foolishness.

Hody continued to try to prove his point by torturing Neptune and his royal sons, critically injuring them. He was on the verge of taking Neptune's life when Luffy, hidden inside Megalo, suddenly appeared and kicked Hody away. Hoe arrived and carried Neptune and the princes to safety, while the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates made an unexpected appearance in the plaza.

Later, Neptune was seen with his sons and Hoe as the massive ship Noah approached the island. He panicked, knowing that Noah should not be moved until a certain day arrives. Neptune explained the significance of Noah and emphasized that it must not be damaged.

The Minister of the Left and some soldiers found Neptune and asked him to evacuate. Neptune, however, chose to wait for the return of the princes. After the Straw Hats defeated the leaders of the New Fish-Man Pirates, everyone watched as Luffy attempted to destroy Noah. Neptune apologized to Joy Boy for not being able to keep the promise, but the Sea Kings appeared and prevented Noah from falling, saving the promise.

Later, Neptune headed to Gyoncorde Plaza with the Minister of the Left. He was informed that the kidnapped mermaids were found inside the Ryugu Palace and that the treasures in the treasure room were missing. Neptune decided to ignore the theft of the treasures and had his men inform the people of Fish-Man Island about the discovery of the kidnapped mermaids.

He also dropped the charges against the Straw Hat Pirates. Neptune then reunited with the princes and Shirahoshi in the plaza. When Jinbe offered to donate his blood to save Luffy, Neptune did not object and mentioned that the law prohibiting it was merely another "curse."

Following the defeat of the New Fish-Man Pirates, Neptune decided to release the human pirates who had been enslaved by Hody. He saw no reason to keep them imprisoned. However, he ordered that the remaining New Fish-Man Pirates live under the surveillance of his army, where they would perform penal servitude. Neptune also announced the closure of the Fish-Man District.

Neptune inquired about the whereabouts of the Straw Hat Pirates and was surprised to learn they had left. He used a Baby Den Den Mushi to call them and invited them to a banquet at the palace.

During the banquet, Nico Robin asked Neptune to step outside for a private conversation. She revealed that she had read the Poneglyph in the Sea Forest and asked him about Joy Boy. Neptune, trusting Robin, shared that Joy Boy was a historical figure from the Void Century who had broken a promise with Fish-Man Island.

This apology message on the Poneglyph was meant for the Mermaid Princess of that era. Neptune admitted that someone was destined to fulfill this promise on Joy Boy's behalf. Robin questioned if Joy Boy, who attempted to use Noah, could control Sea Kings, to which Neptune replied negatively.

He explained that it was the Mermaid Princess from that era who possessed this power, and the fact that Shirahoshi had awakened the same ability was concerning. Robin revealed the existence of another Poneglyph she had discovered in Skypiea two years ago and asked if the Mermaid Princess from Joy Boy's time had a specific name, as Shirahoshi shared the same name and power. Neptune was shocked to realize that his daughter's other name was Poseidon, one of the ancient weapons.

He expressed concerns about the potential consequences if this information about his daughter's power were to become public, as various forces around the world would seek to exploit it. After discovering the treasure thief Caribou, Nami asked Neptune why he wasn't pursuing him.

Neptune considered the treasures less valuable, especially after the Straw Hat Pirates had saved the lives of the Fish-Man Island citizens, and he allowed the Straw Hats to take the treasures if they could catch the thief. Neptune and his sons, along with Jinbe, the ministers, and some royal soldiers, went to check on the former leaders of the New Fish-Man Pirates who were imprisoned in the tower.

They discovered that Hody and his companions had aged significantly and become frail. It became evident that Hody had stolen the contents of the Tamatebako box before leaving the Neptune Army. Neptune expressed pity for Hody's delusional state and mentioned that he would reconsider Hody's punishment.

Neptune then had a private conversation with Jinbe regarding the status of the Sun Pirates, who were now under Big Mom's jurisdiction. Jinbe revealed that they had relative freedom under her rule, protecting Fish-Man Island through her name.

Neptune acknowledged Jinbe's efforts and mentioned that, with the addition of 70,000 soldiers from the Fish-Man District, they had an alternative flag to replace Big Mom's protection. They decided to align with the Straw Hat Pirates if they lost Big Mom's favor.

Later, the Minister of the Right informed Neptune that the Tamatebako treasure box contained a bomb set to explode when opened, a security measure implemented after its contents were stolen ten years ago. The box had been given to Big Mom, along with all the other treasures, by Luffy. Neptune and the Minister of the Right were concerned about the possibility of Big Mom opening the box.

As the Straw Hat Pirates departed from Fish-Man Island, Neptune, and his family bid them farewell, expressing their hope that the bomb inside the Tamatebako would be rendered harmless due to the damp environment. He reminded his sons not to forget the debt they owed to the Straw Hats.

Zou Arc

During the Zou Arc, Neptune and his sons tried to persuade Shirahoshi to accompany them as the time for Levely approached.

Levely Arc

As news of Luffy's adventures in Totto Land spread worldwide, Neptune read about it in the newspaper. He learned that Jinbe had joined Luffy's crew after his actions against Big Mom. In response, Neptune planned to declare Fish-Man Island under the protection of the Straw Hat Pirates. Shirahoshi decided to accompany her family to the Levely, and they prepared to depart.

At the Red Port, Neptune and his family met Monkey D. Garp, who escorted them to the bondola. Along the way, Neptune intervened in a quarrel between Garp and Sterry. After parting with Garp, Neptune and his family rode the bondola to Mary Geoise, where they marveled at the sun and sky.

In Mary Geoise, Neptune engaged in conversations with other royals in the socializing plaza. When Charlos attempted to take Shirahoshi by force, Neptune prepared to confront Charlos and the CP0, even if it meant giving up on Otohime's dream. However, Mjosgard intervened, striking Charlos and demanding Shirahoshi's release.

After the incident, Neptune acknowledged that there are good humans and that Mjosgard's actions had saved Otohime's dream. He later attended the Levely discussions with other kings and queens. During the fourth day of discussions, he became aware of King Cobra's absence due to sickness.

Wano Country Arc

Following the Levely, Neptune and his family returned to Fish-Man Island with Garp. Garp informed Neptune about an incident involving Arabasta that occurred after leaving Mary Geoise.

Neptune’s Personality

Neptune is known for being straightforward and sometimes a bit blunt. He often invites people, like the Straw Hat Pirates, in a straightforward manner. He has a habit of shouting his name randomly, followed by his pet whale's "Hoe." Sometimes he mispronounces names and often ends his sentences with the word "jamon."

While he can be easy-going and absent-minded, Neptune becomes serious when necessary. He was willing to capture the Straw Hat Pirates when they were falsely accused of kidnapping mermaids, although he didn't think it was fair to arrest them based on a prediction.

Neptune in One Piece.

Neptune is very caring and protective, especially when it comes to his daughter Shirahoshi. He takes extreme security measures to keep her safe from threats like Vander Decken IX. He gets emotional and worried when Shirahoshi is upset or in danger, and he's even willing to entrust her safety to others when he thinks it's necessary, despite his natural protective instincts.

Neptune can be perceptive at times, like when he correctly guessed that Luffy hid Shirahoshi inside Megalo. However, he can also jump to conclusions quickly, as seen when he stopped suspecting Luffy after Vander Decken IX appeared and accused Decken of kidnapping Shirahoshi.

He has a complex mix of emotions. He expressed a strong desire for revenge when his wife was killed, even if her killer was unarmed. Yet, he struggled with this desire, realizing it went against Otohime's teachings of forgiveness. He wanted to break the cycle of hate between humans and fish-men. Neptune believes in the power of time to heal wounds and end hatred.

Neptune is well-informed about the Void Century, poneglyphs, and their significance. He is aware that his daughter, Shirahoshi, possesses the power of the ancient weapon Poseidon, and he's both concerned and fearful of her power. He was also surprised and slightly apprehensive when Nico Robin asked him about the history and Joy Boy.

Neptune’s Appearance

Neptune is a formidable and imposing figure, embodying the essence of a coelacanth merman. Despite being seventy years old, he possesses a commanding presence. His most distinctive features include a strikingly red nose and small, intense eyes. Neptune's age-defying, long, and thick orange curly hair cascades down his head, continuing into an impressive beard.

Both his chest and arms are covered with a thick layer of hair. On each of his bare arms, he proudly displays matching black tattoos. These tattoos take the form of spirals with wavy protrusions.

Neptune's regal attire further sets him apart. He adorns a resplendent gold crown, reminiscent of a tulip and embedded with dazzling jewels. Golden bracelets grace each of his wrists, highlighting his royal status. In his strong grip, he wields a magnificent gold trident, its design intricate and elaborate.

For formal occasions, such as Otohime's funeral, Neptune dons a grand suit. During his family's arrival at the Red Port for the Levely, he opts for a dark-colored coat.

Neptune’s Abilities

As the king of the Ryugu Kingdom, Neptune holds authority over the entire kingdom, and his mere presence outside the palace can cause panic among the people.

Neptune has an unusual ability for a merman, allowing him to communicate with whales. This is not a common skill among mermen, who usually communicate with regular fish. He can use this ability to call his pet whale, Hoe, when needed.

In his prime, Neptune was a powerful warrior, respected as the "Great Knight of the Sea." However, his strength has diminished with age. He once strained his back during a battle with Roronoa Zoro, which put him at a disadvantage.

This back injury later left him defenseless against the New Fish-Man Pirates when the pain became too much to bear. Despite his age, Neptune possesses immense physical strength and durability. He wields a massive trident and can use a technique called "Merman Combat" to manipulate water and launch water-based attacks.

Neptune's weapon of choice is the gigantic trident he carries, which matches his size. He is presumed to be proficient in using it. While he was once a formidable fighter, he was later overpowered by Zoro, who managed to subdue Neptune and restrain him in chains without suffering any visible injuries. This happened because Neptune was caught off guard and his back was already injured.

Neptune’s Relationships

Family

Neptune is incredibly protective of his family. He formed an army of his sons to track down a pirate who was harassing his daughter, Shirahoshi. He still loves and considers himself married to his late wife, Otohime, even a decade after her passing. Neptune's beloved whale, Hoe, is also considered a part of his family.

As the king of the Ryugu Kingdom, Neptune cares deeply for his subjects. Despite facing criticism from his ministers, he doesn't hold any resentment. He is willing to make sacrifices to protect his people, even putting his own life on the line. The citizens of the Ryugu Kingdom reciprocate this affection by being willing to endure hardships to ensure Neptune's safety.

Roger Pirates

Neptune had a strong and trusting relationship with the Roger Pirates. He trusted them enough to reveal the Poneglyphs at the Sea Forest, a testament to the depth of their friendship. The Roger Pirates shared a close bond with Neptune, engaging in friendly banter, including jokes about the state of Fish-Man Island and his future daughter.

Whitebeard (Edward Newgate)

Neptune had a long-standing and deep friendship with the Emperor Whitebeard. They shared a history of helping each other, with Neptune supporting Whitebeard during his younger days. Their close bond was a key reason why Whitebeard protected Fish-Man Island. They were known to have shared drinks and had a strong friendship, although the exact details of how they became friends are unknown.

Straw Hat Pirates

Neptune in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Initially, Neptune respected the Straw Hats for saving his daughter's pet, Megalo, and invited them to a banquet as a gesture of gratitude. However, a conflict arose due to Shyarly's prediction, leading Neptune and his guards to attempt to capture the pirates for the island's safety. The Straw Hats, in turn, resisted and inadvertently captured Ryugu Palace, further straining their relationship.

Their differences were set aside when Hody Jones initiated a coup d'état, and the Straw Hats played a pivotal role in saving Neptune, his family, and his kingdom. This led to a bond of friendship between Neptune and the Straw Hat Pirates. Neptune cleared them of all crimes and allowed them access to the treasures in the treasure room. He even expressed a desire to borrow their flag for the safety of Fish-Man Island, should it lose Big Mom's protection.

Neptune's contrition over not notifying the Straw Hats about the explosive Tamatebako box further solidified their relationship. The box, when opened by Big Mom, helped the Straw Hats escape a dire situation, making Neptune's unintentional assistance crucial to their survival.

Jinbe

Neptune and Jinbe have a strong and enduring friendship. Neptune has known Jinbe since his time in the royal army, and he was grateful to Jinbe for joining the Seven Warlords of the Sea to support Otohime's quest for peace between fish-men and humans.

Even after Jinbe forfeited his title as a Warlord, Neptune still respects and values their friendship. He allows Jinbe to visit the island anytime he wishes and encourages him to consider joining Monkey D. Luffy's crew, the Straw Hat Pirates.

Monkey D. Garp

Neptune and Garp became acquainted when Garp escorted the Neptune Family to the Levely. Their connection deepened because Garp is Monkey D. Luffy's grandfather. The family connection between Luffy and Garp provides a common ground for Neptune and Garp to get along. While their relationship is not extensively explored in the provided information, it appears to be based on mutual respect and family ties.

Vander Decken IX

Neptune in One Piece.

Neptune's relationship with Vander Decken IX is primarily marked by Neptune's anger and protective instincts. Decken relentlessly harassed Shirahoshi with threatening marriage proposals, which earned him Neptune's wrath. In response, Neptune had his sons form an army to track down Decken and put an end to his harassment.

When Shirahoshi was believed to have been kidnapped, Neptune quickly accused Decken of the act, driven by his protective concern for his daughter. After Decken and Hody Jones were defeated, Neptune promptly imprisoned Decken, putting an end to the threat against Shirahoshi.

Hody Jones

Neptune in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Hody Jones is one of Neptune's main enemies and represents a significant source of conflict. Hody's extreme belief in vengeance against humanity and his intent to create a world where humans are enslaved make him a formidable adversary.

Hody's disloyal actions, including launching a coup d'etat against Neptune, fueled Neptune's disdain for the Fish-Man's selfishness as the new king. Their enmity escalated when Hody revealed that he was the one responsible for killing Neptune's wife, Otohime, a decade ago, sparking a violent hatred in the king.

However, Neptune's perspective changed after Shirahoshi explained her reasons for not revealing the truth about Otohime's death. He decided to let go of his intense hatred for Hody and opted to imprison him rather than have him executed for his crimes.
