Sugar’s History

Sugar and her sister Monet came from a harsh and dreadful environment. At the ages of 9 and 17, respectively, Donquixote Doflamingo rescued them from this dire situation. They made a life-altering choice to leave behind their previous existence in favor of joining the Donquixote Family. It's worth noting that they became part of the crew after Trafalgar Law had already departed, as they were not seen alongside the family during Law's time with them.

At the age of ten, Sugar consumed the Hobi Hobi no Mi, a Devil Fruit that granted her eternal youth and halted her aging process. Roughly two years after obtaining this ability, which was approximately eight years before the Battle of Marineford, she participated in the Donquixote Pirates' invasion of the royal palace in Dressrosa.

During a critical moment when Doflamingo had captured Riku Doldo III and was holding him captive at the palace, Kyros arrived to confront Doflamingo and attempt a rescue. In her capacity, Sugar transformed Kyros into a toy, marking him as her first known victim. Strikingly, Kyros retained his free will as a toy due to Sugar's failure to establish a contract with him.

As time passed and Doflamingo solidified his control over Dressrosa, Sugar continued her sinister work. She transformed a multitude of the island's inhabitants into living toys. Among her victims were Dressrosa's soldiers, pirates, members of the Marine forces, government officials, royalty from other nations, individuals from the Revolutionary Army, and even animals.

Punk Hazard Arc

Sugar was sitting beside Doflamingo on one of his chairs outside the Dressrosa palace. During this time, she casually observed Baby 5's failed attempt to attack Doflamingo. She was munching on grapes as she watched and listened to Doflamingo's discussion with Vergo regarding the situation with Law.

Later, Sugar was actively searching for Doflamingo within the palace. She approached Lao G and Giolla, inquiring about Doflamingo's whereabouts. They suggested he might be in a room on the fourth floor, but Sugar quickly corrected them, stating that he was not in the room. Lao G sighed in response, noting Doflamingo's tendency to venture out on his own.

Dressrosa Arc

Following Doflamingo's false resignation from the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Sugar was actively monitoring the Den Den Mushis in the Dressrosa palace ring.

Later that day, Baby 5 inquired about Doflamingo's whereabouts. Sugar, however, claimed not to know his location at that time.

As the situation escalated, Sugar transformed the Corrida Colosseum tournament losers into toys. One by one, she used her Devil Fruit ability to turn them into living toys, thereby erasing their memories and identities.

While Franky attempted to infiltrate the Toy House, Sugar overheard the skirmish through a Den Den Mushi. Trebol assured her that the Straw Hats' primary objective was the SMILE factory and that she could simply turn them into toys if they managed to reach that far. Trebol also expressed absolute confidence that nobody was aware of her existence. However, this assumption proved to be incorrect, as Sugar had unwittingly become the target of Usopp, Robin, Kyros, and an army of dwarves.

When Cavendish was brought to the executive tower, Sugar used her powers to transform him into a toy, effectively bringing him under the control of the Donquixote Family. Meanwhile, Usopp and the dwarves were outside Sugar's room, planning to poison her using Tatababasco, disguised as a grape, which would render her unconscious.

Robin, disguised as one of Doflamingo's subordinates, entered Sugar's room and lured Trebol away from the tower. With Trebol temporarily absent, a group of dwarves stormed in, attempting to attack Sugar. However, Sugar swiftly transformed some of the dwarves into her toy servants, ordering them to eliminate the intruders.

While her toy minions battled the remaining dwarves, Sugar grabbed a Den Den Mushi and warned Trebol of the impending trap. In a surprising turn of events, Sugar was taken aback when Trebol hurled a ship into the tower, causing further chaos and disruption.

Following the failed attempt to incapacitate Sugar with a spice-filled grape, Robin used her Devil Fruit powers to try to subdue Sugar. However, Sugar managed to touch one of Robin's arms, thereby transforming her into a toy.

With Trebol and all the dwarves incapacitated, Sugar picked up the fake grape that was intended to poison her. She decided to use it on Usopp, forcing it into his mouth. After a brief moment, Usopp began screaming in excruciating pain, causing Sugar to echo his horrific scream, lose consciousness, and foam at the mouth in terror.

Sugar's loss of consciousness resulted in the breaking of her Devil Fruit's effects. Every living thing that she had turned into a toy over the past ten years reverted to its original form, effectively restoring all the lost memories associated with them. This sudden transformation led to widespread chaos throughout Dressrosa as families were reunited, former toys turned back into humans, and the Donquixote Family's control over the kingdom crumbled.

Subsequently, Sugar was seen unconscious at the royal palace, which had been relocated to the top of Flower Hill by Pica.

After some time, Sugar was revived thanks to Princess Mansherry's Devil Fruit ability. However, she developed a fear of long noses and objects resembling them. Sugar also harbored a strong desire for revenge against Usopp and had the intent to turn the people of Dressrosa into toys once more.

Sugar learned of Monkey D. Luffy and Law's presence at the Castle Garden and headed there to exact her revenge. She prepared to touch them and erase their existence. However, Usopp, from the old King's Plateau, used his Kenbunshoku Haki to lock onto Sugar and launched a "Long Range Bagworm" attack. The bagworm contained a recreation of Usopp's Tatababasco face created by Kanjuro. This high-speed attack caused Sugar to relive her earlier traumatic experience and once again lose consciousness, saving Luffy and Law from her powers.

She was subsequently placed in a timeout room alongside other defeated officers such as Lao G, Machvise, Dellinger, and Gladius. Giolla intended to use Mansherry's healing powers to revive them, but this plan was thwarted by Leo and Kabu, who defeated Giolla and rescued Mansherry. Following Doflamingo's defeat, Sugar and her fellow officers were arrested by the Marines.

Sugar’s Personality

Sugar is initially depicted as a loyal and cruel subordinate of Doflamingo, actively participating in the subjugation and enslavement of the citizens of Dressrosa by turning them into toys. Her cruelty is evident in her pride in her actions and her desire for revenge when the toys are returned to their original forms.

She takes pleasure in the power she wields, turning people into toys and leaving them forgotten by those who knew them.

However, despite her cruelty, there are glimpses of empathy in Sugar's character. She displays a sense of pity or sadness when observing the naive faith of the dwarves in Usoland, despite feeling betrayed by him. This indicates that she may have some capacity for empathy, albeit buried beneath her loyalty to Doflamingo.

Sugar also exhibits childish behavior at times, running around the palace in search of Doflamingo like an impatient child. She is not easily rattled by events around her and remains fairly indifferent, even in the face of conflicts involving her allies.

One notable aspect of her personality is her fear of long noses, which stems from a traumatic encounter with Usopp after he consumed a spicy grape. This fear makes her uncomfortable around anything resembling a long nose, and she even gets frightened when offered sausage by a long-nosed soldier.

Despite her child-like appearance, Sugar is highly self-assured and confident in her abilities. She takes offense when people underestimate her due to her appearance and readily demonstrates her power to prove her strength. She can be cunning and manipulative, using her innocent facade to lure people into traps.

Sugar’s Appearance

Sugar, as seen in the digitally colorized manga.

Sugar has the appearance of a young girl of around ten years old. She has aquamarine hair and dark blue eyes, which give her a youthful and innocent appearance. She often wears clothing that enhances this image.

During the takeover of Dressrosa, Sugar wore a light-colored dress and a cape with bear-like ears on the hood, further emphasizing her child-like appearance. However, this innocent facade conceals her true age and the powers of her Devil Fruit, which have halted her aging process.

In the underground world where she resides, Sugar wears a white dress adorned with light blue polka dots. She also dons a magenta hooded cape with bear-like ears, adding to her youthful image. She wears a monocle, which she styles like an eyepatch, covering her left eye. Additionally, she sports a small crown, emphasizing her role in the Donquixote Family

Sugar’s Abilities

As an officer of the Donquixote Pirates, Sugar held a significant level of authority within the crew. Despite her child-like appearance and having Trebol as her bodyguard, Sugar possessed notable speed and agility. She demonstrated this prowess when countering attacks from Tontatta dwarves who moved at such incredible speeds that normal humans could not perceive them.

However, Sugar had a weak constitution, as evidenced when she lost consciousness after seeing a horrifying visage of pain and anguish created by Usopp, who had been force-fed the Tatababasco-laced grape. This vulnerability became a critical weakness, as anything remotely resembling Usopp's terrifying expression could trigger a flashback causing her to faint.

Devil Fruit

Sugar in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Sugar consumed the Hobi Hobi no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. This fruit granted her the ability to transform any living being she touched into a subservient living toy. When a person was transformed into a toy, their existence was entirely erased from the memories of everyone who had ever known them.

The Hobi Hobi no Mi also halted Sugar's aging process, allowing her to maintain a child-like appearance. After transforming an individual into a toy, Sugar had to establish a contract with them and set specific rules for them to follow. The transformed toy was compelled to obey all the conditions dictated by Sugar, rendering them helpless and trapped within their toy forms. Failure to create such a contract would allow the toy to retain its free will.

Notably, if Sugar were to be knocked unconscious, all individuals she had transformed into toys would revert back to their original forms. Considering the large number of people she had transformed, this posed a significant threat to both her and the rest of the Donquixote Pirates crew.

Sugar’s Relationships

Monet

Sugar and Monet are sisters who were saved by Doflamingo from a terrible environment. Although they are siblings, they are never shown interacting with each other in the series. It is unknown if Sugar has heard about Monet's death, as their relationship is not explored in the storyline.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Sugar holds unwavering loyalty and reverence towards Doflamingo, viewing him as her captain, savior, and benefactor. She maintains a good relationship with Doflamingo and is willing to follow his orders unquestioningly. Her dedication to Doflamingo is exemplified by her role in keeping the citizens of Dressrosa transformed into toys as part of the crew's operations.

Trebol

Sugar and Trebol, another high-ranking member of the Donquixote Pirates, do not get along well. Sugar openly expresses her desire for Trebol to die, and Trebol often refers to her as a brat while treating her like a child. Despite their shared loyalty to Doflamingo, their interactions are marked by tension and discord.

Gladius

Gladius, another member of the crew, becomes annoyed when Sugar faints a second time and causes her powers over the toy fighters to disperse. This suggests that there may be some frustration or impatience within the crew regarding Sugar's fainting episodes.

Trafalgar Law

Still from the anime.

Law, formerly a prominent member of the crew, does not seem familiar with Sugar or her powers. He doesn't show any sign of acknowledgement or caution when she approaches him and Luffy, indicating that he may not have had much interaction with her during his time with the Donquixote Pirates.

Lower-Ranking Subordinates

Sugar appears to be ruthless when dealing with lower-ranking subordinates. She doesn't hesitate to use her Devil Fruit powers to turn them into toys if they trigger her trauma, such as when a foot soldier with a long nose gave her sausages, reminding her of Usopp. Her actions towards these subordinates are cold and unforgiving.

Usopp

Sugar in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Sugar holds a particular contempt and trauma for Usopp, one of the Straw Hat Pirates. She reacts in horror whenever she sees someone with a long nose or anything resembling such due to her past experience with Usopp. Sugar vowed to turn Usopp and his crewmates into toys, but ultimately, she fell victim to Usopp's clever plan, leading to her defeat.

Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, is one of Sugar's adversaries. As a central figure in the Donquixote Pirates' operations, Sugar is a target for Luffy and his crew. Luffy, along with his allies, aims to thwart the Donquixote Pirates' plans and take down Doflamingo, making Sugar an enemy of the Straw Hat Pirates.
