Zala ate the Toge Toge no Mi Devil Fruit at some point in her past and joined the organization Baroque Works. She rose through the ranks to become an Officer Agent and partnered with Mr. 1. She used the alias "Paula" and owned the Spiders Cafe as a cover.
When Baroque Works initiated Operation Utopia in the Arabasta Kingdom, Zala was summoned to Arabasta by Crocodile, the organization's leader. She initially maintained her cover as Paula but dropped it when other agents arrived. They planned to meet their boss, Mr. 0, in Rainbase.
In Rainbase, they were greeted by Miss All Sunday, who revealed their underwater location beneath a casino. She also disclosed the boss's identity as Crocodile. Zala and her fellow agents learned about the final plan and their roles in it. However, a complication arose when Mr. 3 revealed that he had failed to assassinate Vivi and her pirate companions.
Since Vivi was a friend of Koza, the leader of a rebellion in Arabasta, her meeting with them could jeopardize Operation Utopia. Crocodile ordered Zala and her colleagues to be on the lookout for Vivi and the pirates, instructing them to prevent the encounter, which was crucial to the success of their mission. With this mission in mind, Zala and her fellow agents set out to fulfill their roles in the operation.
In the mission in Nanohana, Zala and her partner took control of a large weapons ship and intentionally crashed it into the port town. This act, combined with Mr. 2's impersonation of King Nefertari Cobra, was meant to provoke the rebels into opposing the king's army. As a result of these actions, they initiated a sequence of events that would lead to the rebels fighting against the royal army.
While departing, they encountered a young boy named Kappa, who had figured out Mr. 2's deception. Recognizing the threat posed by the boy, they incapacitated him to prevent him from interfering with the mission. Afterward, they left with Mr. 2 for Alubarna, the capital of Arabasta.
Zala and her fellow agents regrouped with the rest of the Officer Agents at the westernmost gate of the city. They were instructed to wait for Vivi and her pirate companions, who were expected to arrive. When the group, consisting of six cloaked figures riding Super Spot-Billed Ducks, approached, the Baroque Works agents could not determine which one was Vivi due to their cloaks and quick Super Spot-Billed Ducks. In an attempt to identify Vivi, Zala and her colleagues split up to pursue the cloaked figures.
Zala followed two of the cloaked figures through the westernmost gate, expecting to find Vivi. However, she was surprised to discover that neither of the two figures was Vivi. Instead, they turned out to be Zoro and Nami. Realizing that Nami was the only one she could face, Zala approached her with the intention of engaging in a battle.
During their battle, Zala took the offensive, attacking Nami, who was trying to get the hang of her new weapon, the Clima-Tact, created by Usopp. Nami struggled to use the weapon effectively, and Zala took advantage of her confusion. Using her Toge Toge no Mi powers, Zala demonstrated the ability to deform any part of her body at will.
At first, Zala found Nami's attempts at various combat techniques amusing, but her patience wore thin over time. She eventually decided to go on the offensive and attack Nami.
Nami attempted to dodge Zala's attacks, and Zala taunted her, telling her that running away wouldn't save her. She suggested that Nami should accept her impending defeat calmly. When Nami tried to use her Clima-Tact, it didn't work as expected, causing Nami to become more frustrated.
Zala managed to slice Nami's cheek, and as she chased Nami, she transformed into a large ball of spikes. Nami was knocked through a glass window but managed to use her quick thinking to wrap her robe around Zala and hurl her away. Zala was mildly impressed by Nami's desperate tactics.
Nami, determined to fight back, reviewed the Clima-Tact's instruction manual, only to find that the fighting combinations were written on the back. She ripped her dress to allow for better movement and began preparing to confront her opponent.
Nami attempted to use the Clima-Tact by blowing bubbles, including warm, cool, and static bubbles, but they only mildly amused Zala. Growing bored, Zala decided to finish her cigarette and charged at Nami, using her Devil Fruit powers to grow spikes on her heels. She managed to impale Nami's leg with a spike. Nami realized that her new weapon was the key to her victory and used the Clima Tact to blow Zala away.
Nami continued to read her weapon's manual, she began to grasp a better understanding of how to use it, particularly the combinations involving hot and cool pressure. Zala, growing impatient with Nami's focus on the manual, charged at her with the intention of delivering a fatal blow. She used her spike fingers to pierce through Nami's chest and face.
However, it turned out that Nami had created an illusion to trick Zala, making it seem like she was impaled. This sudden turn of events surprised Zala, and she quickly attacked again. This time, she transformed her arms and breasts into sharp spikes, attempting to pin Nami to the wall. Nami narrowly avoided getting stabbed by a spike formed from Zala's lips.
Zala continued to taunt Nami, keeping a part of her staff away from her. She mocked Nami's weapon, saying it lacked significant attack power. Nami managed to steal her staff back and attempted to use all three pieces together, but it only created small water fountains, further frustrating her.
In response, Zala transformed her hair into a massive ball of sharp urchin spikes and charged at Nami. Nami rolled out of her path, narrowly avoiding being struck. Witnessing the destructive power Zala possessed, Nami felt fear and apprehension. Zala explained that she was only showing off in response to Nami's "show." She then used her Devil Fruit powers to inject her arms and make them bigger and stronger, intensifying the threat she posed.
Zala, however, slammed Nami backward. Before Zala could deliver a potentially fatal blow, the thundercloud that Nami had created struck her with a bolt of lightning. Though injured and enraged, Zala tried to skewer Nami once more, only to be deceived by another mirage.
Nami, determined to fight on despite her own wounds, thought of Vivi and how much suffering she had endured. She recognized that her own injuries paled in comparison to what Vivi had gone through.
With newfound determination, Nami unleashed her special move. Initially, two small toy pigeons popped out, seemingly harmless. However, they quickly wrapped around Zala and began to spin, propelling her at high velocity. This sent Zala crashing through the walls of a building.
Following the failure of Operation Utopia due to Monkey D. Luffy defeating Crocodile, Zala was eventually found and apprehended by the Marines, with Tashigi leading the operation. Along with the other captured Baroque Works agents, she was sent to prison.
Following the events in Arabasta, Zala, Crocodile, and the other Officer Agents who had been arrested found themselves imprisoned in a Marine base. As time went by, they received an unexpected visit from none other than Miss Goldenweek and the Mr. 5 team.
Miss Goldenweek and her group were on a mission to free their incarcerated colleagues. They successfully infiltrated the Marine base and managed to release Zala and the other imprisoned Baroque Works agents from their cells.
Once they were free, Zala, along with Miss Goldenweek, Mr. 5, Miss Valentine, and the other escapees, decided to establish a new Spiders Cafe. They chose to renovate the former Cactus Saloon for this purpose. Zala took on the role of a bartender and became the owner of the new establishment.
Zala has a calm and mild-tempered disposition. She possesses a unique and somewhat funny way of walking, characterized by an exaggerated "sexy" hip swing. Zala is not easily amused by the actions of others and tends to remain composed in various situations.
While she can be playful and enjoys toying with her victims, she is also a lethal fighter who doesn't hesitate to resort to violence, much like her partner Mr. 1. There are hints of mercy in her character, as she offers a painless death to Nami if she surrendered, showing a more complex side to her personality.
Zala is also brave and unafraid to confront authority figures, as she directly questions Crocodile about his objectives, in contrast to her intimidated former colleagues. Overall, Zala is a multifaceted character with a blend of calmness, confidence, humor, and a willingness to be both playful and ruthless when necessary.
Zala is a tall, slim young woman with curly dark-blue hair, thick lips, dark green eyes, pale skin, and a curvaceous figure. Her most striking feature is her over-exaggerated way of walking, characterized by seductive hip swings.
In her first appearance in the Spiders Cafe, Zala wears yellow crystal square glasses and a diamond-patterned bandanna with pink, turquoise, white, and purple tones. She sports a purple tank top with pink embroideries and green bush-like ornaments, dark brown low-riding pants, and platform sandals. Her long, dark blue hair is tied back in a ponytail.
Her most characteristic outfit consists of a revealing dark brown ensemble, including a short long-sleeved jacket with beige fur trims, a bikini top with a spider web-like pattern on her abdomen, low-riding pants, and platform sandals. She is occasionally seen smoking from a long whitish pipe.
During Miss Goldenweek's "Operation: Meet Baroque Works," Zala wears the typical striped prisoner outfit, covering her from the upper part of her torso to her thighs. She also has dark footwear and large handcuffs.
ala is a skilled fighter, and she often relies on the abilities granted by her Devil Fruit, the Toge Toge no Mi. This Paramecia-type Devil Fruit allows her to grow sharp spikes from any part of her body. She uses this power to attack her opponents by stabbing them with these spikes. Her proficiency with this ability, along with her combat skills, led her to become the second-highest-ranking female officer agent in Baroque Works, just below Miss All-Sunday.
Zala can enhance her physical abilities further by "doping" herself, increasing her muscle mass and strength to the point where she can easily demolish buildings with a single motion. She can also use her power to gain incredible speed by sprouting spikes from her feet, allowing her to move at high velocity.
Her devil fruit is quite versatile, offering a balanced mix of offense and defense, especially at close range. Anyone who attempts to fight her up close will likely suffer severe injuries due to the sharp spikes she can produce.
Zala's relationship with Mr. 1 is strictly professional. They work together as partners to accomplish their assigned tasks within Baroque Works. While their interactions are mostly focused on work, Zala occasionally throws sarcastic remarks toward Mr. 1, particularly when he exhibits violent tendencies. Despite the occasional sarcasm, they function effectively as a team.
Zala, like her partner Mr. 1, finds Mr. 2's flamboyant and eccentric nature to be ridiculous. However, unlike Mr. 1, Zala maintains a calmer attitude toward Mr. 2. She intervenes in conflicts between Mr. 1 and Mr. 2 to ensure they can cooperate effectively to meet their boss, Mr. 0.
Zala maintains a calm and respectful attitude toward Mr. 4, just as she does with the rest of her colleagues. Her actions, such as offering Mr. 4 an orange juice when he arrives at the Spider's Cafe, demonstrate her professional and polite behavior within the organization.
Despite Miss Merry Christmas' impertinence and overreaction to Zala's inquiries about work, Zala responds with a mild temper and a respectful attitude. She even apologizes to Miss Merry Christmas, displaying a level of professionalism in dealing with her colleague's emotions.
Zala initially appears surprised and somewhat intimidated when meeting her boss, Mr. 0 (Crocodile), for the first time. This is particularly evident when she observes Crocodile "drying up" Mr. 3. However, her curiosity drives her to directly ask Crocodile about his final objective, indicating that she is not entirely subservient and is willing to engage with her boss despite her initial surprise.

Miss Goldenweek's dream, as revealed in Miss Goldenweek's Rainbow Color Trap, is to remain as Paula, the cafe owner.
Miss Doublefinger's name is a reference to January 1 (1/1), which is New Year's Day. Oda explained that "Double finger" refers to his own style of body language when talking about January 1; he raises the index fingers on both hands to represent the month and day. Coincidentally, both Oda and her partner, Mr. 1, share a birthday on January 1.
Miss Doublefinger and Mr. 1 have a "sharpness" theme, with spikes and blades in their respective designs.
They were paired together because of their cold-blooded and efficient nature.
Zala's character has a spider theme, with the animal being part of her epithet, her cafe's name, and the spiderweb-like abdominal wires on her battle attire.
Her favorite food is herbal tea, in keeping with the theme of Baroque Works Officer Agents having a type of tea as their favorite food.
