King’s History

Alber, a member of the extinct lunarian tribe from the top of the Red Line, was born 47 years ago on the Grand Line. As a child, he was captured by the World Government and taken to Punk Hazard's Third Research Institute for experimentation on his lunarian abilities and extraction of his lunarian blood's Lineage Factor. It was during this time that he encountered Kaido, who was also a captive and planning to escape to form his own pirate crew.

Impressed by Kaido's ambitions to change the world, Alber joined him after they broke out of the research facility. Kaido bestowed the name "King" upon Alber, declaring him his right-hand man. Around 33 years ago, the Beasts Pirates were founded, with King as a prominent member.

Approximately 28 years ago, King was present when Kaido received a proposition from Kurozumi Higurashi, which led to the Beasts Pirates forming an alliance with Kurozumi Orochi in Wano Country.

During their time together, King expressed his belief that Kaido might be the legendary "Joy Boy," but King's loyalty to Kaido superseded any interest in legends. He vowed never to lose a fight until he saw Kaido become the Pirate King. Eventually, King and Kaido arrived in Wano, establishing their crew's base of operations there.

King participated in the Beasts Pirates' battle against the Gecko Pirates led by Gecko Moria, resulting in a decisive victory for the Beasts Pirates. He also played a significant role in the crew's takeover of Wano, particularly during the final battle against Kozuki Oden, the daimyo of Kuri.

When Oden and his retainers, known as the Nine Red Scabbards, headed to Onigashima, King, and Queen, along with a thousand members of the Beasts Pirates, confronted them in the Udon region. King engaged in a five-day battle, clashing with notable opponents such as Raizo and Ashura Doji. In the midst of the fight, King managed to injure Ashura by stabbing him in the back while the samurai was distracted by Kaido's attack on Oden.

Ultimately, Oden and his allies were defeated, leading to Oden's execution. King, Queen, and Jack were present when Kaido set fire to Oden Castle in an attempt to eliminate the remaining members of the Kozuki Family.

Marinerord Arc

Two years before the Summit War of Marineford, Kaido planned to attack Whitebeard, and King accompanied him on this mission. However, their attempt was thwarted by the intervention of the Red Hair Pirates, led by the infamous Red-Haired Shanks.

Wano Country Arc

In the present on Onigashima, King was initially seen alongside his fellow All-Stars, Queen and Jack. They reprimanded Jack for the lack of offerings from Kuri and discussed their next trade deal, as they could no longer rely on Donquixote Doflamingo. During their conversation, King made derogatory remarks about Queen's incompetence, leading to a heated exchange of insults between the two.

The following day, when the Big Mom Pirates tried to enter Wano by scaling its waterfall using the Queen Mama Chanter, King, transformed into a pteranodon, attacked their ship, causing it to flip over and fall into the sea with Big Mom. A couple of days later, Queen brought a restrained Big Mom from Udon to Onigashima, expressing dissatisfaction with King's failure to eliminate her completely. Big Mom offered King a chance to join her crew, recognizing him as a member of a rare race not belonging to Totto Land, but he refused her proposition.

Before the start of the latest Fire Festival, King learned that the Numbers had returned to Wano and informed Queen. At the beginning of the festival, King approached Kaido to confirm that he had summoned the Tobiroppo in Kaido's name to locate Yamato, whom Kaido claimed to be his son. Kaido offered the Tobiroppo a chance to challenge the All-Stars for their positions if they succeeded, and both King and Jack agreed to this proposal.

Later, during the Golden Kagura on the Live Floor, King stood alongside the other All-Stars and Kaido as Kaido unveiled his plan, the "New Onigashima Project," and unexpectedly beheaded Shogun Orochi with King's sword. As Kaido prepared to execute Momonosuke, the Nine Red Scabbards and Izou appeared, launching a surprise attack. Izou disarmed King by shooting his sword out of his hand, leaving him defenseless as Kaido faced the assault.

During the raid on Onigashima, as the battle between Kaido and the Scabbards raged on the roof of the Skull Dome, Shinobu tried to free Momonosuke covertly. However, King noticed her and swiftly threw her aside. Fortunately, Sanji, using his Raid Suit to turn invisible, managed to rescue Momonosuke successfully. King clashed with Sanji in midair, but Sanji was able to throw Momonosuke to safety before they both crashed into a nearby tower with King in his pteranodon form, aiming to harm Sanji with his beak.

Afterward, King, still flying, briefly guarded the pathway to the rooftop alongside Queen and a group of flying Gifters, protecting the hole created by Kaido. He then returned to the Performance Stage and contacted the Tobiroppo using a Den Den Mushi, instructing them to stop searching for Yamato and prevent the rebel alliance from reaching the rooftop. Upon Bao Huang locating Momonosuke, King ordered all forces to kill the boy, believing that his death would demoralize the enemy samurai.

Later, King resumed his duty of preventing enemies from reaching the roof, as noticed by Roronoa Zoro. When Marco the Phoenix joined the battle inside the dome and began carrying Zoro toward the roof, King and Queen, both transformed into pteranodons, blocked their path. However, Marco quickly neutralized both All-Stars using his phoenix wings and successfully threw Zoro to the rooftop.

King then engaged Marco in a one-on-one fight. After being informed by Bao Huang about the severely wounded Scabbards hiding in the castle's second-floor treasury, King acknowledged his occupied state and ordered someone else to eliminate them. He transformed into his pteranodon form once again and attacked Marco with a barrage of bullet-like fire projectiles.

However, Marco, in his phoenix form, retaliated by flying at Queen. King swiftly switched back to his human form and leaped at Marco, cutting off his left wing with his sword. Undeterred, Marco used the remains of his wing to create a massive fireball, which he hurled directly at King, sending him crashing into a nearby building. Before King could react, Marco followed up with a flying knee strike, causing an explosion. Nonetheless, King quickly recovered and resumed his fight against Marco, determined to continue the battle.

Later, King observed solemnly as the enemy alliance's morale was rejuvenated by Momonosuke's broadcast, revealing that Luffy was alive and would return to the battle. On the Live Floor, King and Queen began taking down the renegade Beasts Pirates who had been converted by a certain Devil Fruit ability. With Marco temporarily incapacitated and Sanji overwhelmed by the combined presence of two All-Stars, King realized the enemy's plan to heal Zoro's severe injuries and ordered his forces to stop it.

King personally found the bandaged-up Zoro, who was being carried away by samurai and attempted to strike him with a flaming Andon punch. However, Marco intervened and blocked the attack, mentioning a race living on the Red Line with the power to burst into flames. King remained silent and, together with Queen, launched attacks against Marco. Before they could make a move, a recovered Zoro and Sanji attacked the All-Stars with their techniques. Zoro sliced King with his Rengoku Oni Giri.

Although knocked down by the attack, King quickly recovered alongside Queen. Taking advantage of Sanji and Zoro's argument, King drew his sword and aimed a strike at Sanji, which Zoro intercepted. When Queen remarked on Sanji's flaming leg, questioning his origins as a "lunarian," King listened silently.

He then focused on Zoro, who was already engaged in battle. King adjusted his sword to fit Zoro's blades and disarmed him, delivering a powerful punch to Zoro's face, which Zoro blocked with his mouth-held sword. Zoro commented on King's fighting style resembling that of a killing machine, to which King explained that he never found traditional forms and styles useful in real battles.

Zoro agreed, stating that he would also do whatever it takes to win their fight. The duel continued with King launching a kick at Zoro in mid-air. Moments later, King, along with everyone else on the Live Floor, was surprised by the sudden appearance of a dragon, later revealed to be the grown-up Momonosuke, crashing into the Skull Dome.

During their intense battle, Zoro managed to break off a piece of King's mask, irritating him. King, in his Human-Beast form, began attacking everyone on the Live Floor indiscriminately. Using his pteranodon wings as makeshift blades, he unleashed chaotic slashing winds that struck both enemies and allies. The force of his attack sent Zoro flying into the Right-Brain Tower's central hallway, where he encountered Franky.

Queen scolded King for grazing him as well, but King expressed his wish to have sliced Queen's neck before following Zoro into the hallway. Using his Tankyudon technique, King flew at Zoro once again, striking him with one of his wings. Although Zoro countered with his Ul-Tora Gari, damaging King's mask further, King overpowered Zoro and sent him crashing through the Skull Dome's outer wall.

With a third divebomb attack, King nearly knocked Zoro off Onigashima, but Zoro managed to push himself back onto the outskirts of the island where King stood. Zoro demanded that King use his sword to finish him off if he wanted his respect, to which King, with more of his face revealed, agreed and asked the same of Zoro.

The two continued their intense sword fight. King transformed back into his pteranodon form and attacked Zoro with fire projectiles and a powerful beak strike, which Zoro blocked with his swords. As they clashed, Zoro had a brief Den Den Mushi call with Sanji. King then flew high into the sky and launched himself at Zoro like a slingshot, leaving Zoro barely able to dodge.

He explained that this was how pteranodons used to hunt in ancient times. Zoro unleashed his Sanbyakurokuju Pound Ho, but King shielded himself with his wings. They engaged in close combat, with Zoro wondering about King's race and his unique abilities. However, King overpowered Zoro with a powerful sword strike, sending him crashing into a boulder.

At that moment, Zoro's sword, Enma, began draining his Haki excessively, much to his dismay. Taking advantage of this, King approached Zoro but refrained from attacking. Confused, Zoro stabbed King's stomach, which King acknowledged as a direct hit before unexpectedly exploding, causing a massive blast. Zoro managed to protect himself with Haki, but King emerged unscathed.

Using his Tempuraudon attack a second time, King grazed Zoro's head while causing significant destruction to the surrounding rocks. King then kicked Zoro to the ground and unleashed his Barizodon attack, pushing the swordsman through the ground and into the lower floors of Kaido's castle.

After a brief moment of reflection on his past, Zoro, determined to handle Enma, grabbed the sword and released his Haoshoku Haki, knocking out the Beasts Pirates around him. In response, King calmly asked if Zoro truly desired to be a "king," which Zoro affirmed.

Zoro's next attack tore apart King's mask, drawing blood and exposing his face. Underlings nearby recognized him as a lunarian, leading King to use his Karyudon technique to burn them to death as punishment. When Zoro asked about King's race, he dismissed it, considering Zoro a dead man.

They continued their battle outside the castle, with King using his wings to launch a barrage of attacks. Zoro declared that King's reign should end, but King asserted that Kaido would become the Pirate King. Zoro struck King with his Rengoku Oni Giri, but the attack had no effect as King's flames returned, enhancing his defense.

King retaliated with a fire dragon, which Zoro evaded, and they clashed blades. King attempted to disarm Zoro using his swordbreaker, but Zoro repelled him with his Haki. Zoro quickly used his Yakkodori technique to swiftly cut through King, who acknowledged that Zoro's attacks could now breach his defense. King stated that a human could never defeat his kind and considered Zoro a decent swordsman, but Zoro vowed to make sure King remembered him.

King unleashed a massive flame dragon, and Zoro countered with a powerful slash, cutting through the dragon and striking King directly, severing part of his wing and destroying his sword. Defeated, King fell unconscious, muttering Kaido's name and recalling their past conversation about Joy Boy and his commitment to never lose until Kaido became Pirate King. King plummeted from Onigashima, and his defeat was witnessed by a passing Mary.

After the alliance's victory, King and Queen were imprisoned in Udon's former Prisoner Mine under Babanuki's watch. A week later, Marine Admiral Ryokugyu arrived in Wano and effortlessly defeated both King and Queen. King was impaled near the heart by Ryokugyu's wooden tendrils, ending his reign.

King’s Personality

King is a serious and reserved man who rarely shows strong emotions, partly because he always wears a mask. He often insults and belittles his fellow crewmates, showing a harsh attitude towards them. As Kaido's right-hand man, King is calm, proactive, and good at making important decisions under pressure.

He took it upon himself to confront Big Mom and her crew to prevent them from entering Wano, even without orders from Kaido. King showed no fear in front of Big Mom and bluntly refused her offer to join her. He also summoned the Tobiroppo by pretending to be Kaido, knowing they would only respond to their captain's call. During the rebel invasion of Onigashima, King took charge of their crew's troops and gave orders calmly.

King is strongly opposed to revealing his face and his identity as a Lunarian. He always wears a mask that covers his face, and nobody has ever seen what he looks like. When his mask was damaged in a fight with Zoro, King became furious and attacked everyone around him, including his own crewmate.

He then relocated the battle to a secluded area. When King's mask was completely removed, and his Lunarian identity was revealed to some of his underlings, he mercilessly killed them with his flames. King takes pride in the strength of his Lunarian race and believes humans cannot compare to them.

There is a sadistic side to King, as described by Queen, who referred to him as a "torture-loving pervert." He shares Kaido's ruthlessness and has no problem executing even a child if it serves Kaido's plans. King is also willing to betray allies outside of their crew if it benefits Kaido's goals. He even lent his sword to Kaido to decapitate their longtime ally Orochi.

King greatly respects the strength in others, especially Kaido's immense power, which led him to join the crew and trust Kaido. In combat, King believes in being versatile and not limiting oneself to a specific fighting style. He doesn't waste time on theatrics or following rules of combat. Instead, he goes straight for the kill, attacking relentlessly and exploiting any opportunity to defeat his opponents.

King is one of the few who knows about Joy Boy and is waiting for his supposed appearance. He even speculated that Kaido might be Joy Boy himself.

King’s Appearance

King is an exceptionally tall man with a muscular build and long limbs. He has distinctive features of his Lunarian race, including large black-feathered wings that reach down to his knees, silver-white hair shaved on the sides but long on top, and a plume of fire constantly rising from his upper back. He has narrow red eyes, dark eyebrows, a straight nose, prominent lips, and a square chin.

King has a black tattoo resembling a laurel wreath circling halfway around his left eye. To conceal his identity, he wears a dark, form-fitting leather uniform with a full-faced mask that covers his head and neck, leaving only his eyes exposed. The mask has blue strips and flame-like shapes on the sides and horn-like spikes on top.

He wears a double-breasted leather jacket with gold buttons and skull patches, dark-blue pants with studded leather bands, and black high-heeled boots. As a young boy, he had long swept hair, and as a captive, he already had his wings and fire, wearing a light-colored shirt and dark pants. Over time, his attire evolved into his current leather uniform.

After joining Kaido, King started wearing a version of his current leather uniform, sometimes seen without his mask in Kaido's presence. Twenty years ago, his uniform had a dark-red color in the anime, instead of blue.

The spikes on his mask were shorter and blunter, and he wore the jacket's collar upturned without white ruffles. The jacket had one row of buttons with golden cross shapes that either served as oversized buttons or patches. In the anime, King was shown carrying a blue-flamed torch.

King’s Abilities

King, the head All-Star of the Beasts Pirates and Kaido's right-hand man, holds significant authority in the crew just below Kaido himself. He took on a commanding role during his leader's absence, leading the Tobiroppo and directing the crew during the raid on Onigashima. He also possesses a strong will, as witnessed by his remaining unaffected by Zoro's Haoshoku Haki blast.

King is highly proficient in the use of Busoshoku Haki. He can apply Haki to his own sword, enabling him to clash evenly with Zoro's three Hardened, high-grade Meito swords. This demonstrates his mastery of Haki and his ability to match Zoro's formidable swordsmanship.

Additionally, King possesses the ability to use Kenbunshoku Haki, which grants him heightened perception and the ability to sense and react to his opponents' movements. This enhances his combat skills and allows him to anticipate and counter his opponents' attacks effectively.

In terms of combat, King is incredibly powerful, as indicated by his impressive bounty of 1,390,000,000 Beli. He has been a part of Kaido's crew for over 30 years, recognized by Kaido for his extraordinary strength and given the name "King" in acknowledgment of his abilities.

King is known as a "calamity" like the other All-Stars, known for his destructive pyrokinetic abilities. He is confident in his strength, believing he can defeat any of the Tobiroppo. During the battle on Onigashima, King engaged Marco, Whitebeard's former right-hand man, in combat, keeping him occupied until Marco ran out of stamina.

He also proved to be a formidable opponent for Roronoa Zoro, overwhelming him in their duel. However, Zoro eventually discovered King's weakness and dealt a decisive blow, defeating him.

Physical Abilities

King's fighting style is characterized by his wild and brutal approach, combining hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, his Zoan transformation, and his ability to emit fire. He is skilled in melee combat, disarming opponents and using a combination of punches, kicks, and sword strikes. As a swordsman, he can match Zoro's powerful fighting style and overpower him at times.

King possesses incredible physical strength, demonstrated by his ability to throw Shinobu with force, restrain a Raid Suit-enhanced Sanji with one hand, and slice off one of Marco's phoenix wings with a single sword swipe.

King in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

He is resilient due to his lunarian heritage, surviving extreme endurance experiments and shrugging off gunfire without injury. He can endure powerful attacks without being fazed, such as blows from Marco and Zoro's devastating techniques.

Despite his large frame, King is fast, agile, and can cover large distances in a single leap. He can keep up with Zoro in close combat and possesses the ability to fly using his lunarian wings, even without using his Zoan powers.

When the flame on his back is extinguished, King's speed increases significantly but his natural durability decreases. However, even in this state, he can withstand attacks and survive falls from great heights.

Weapons

King carries a large katana on his right hip that has a unique sword breaker design. The blade can form comb-like teeth along the edge, allowing King to catch and disarm his opponents, leaving them vulnerable to further attacks.

He can also infuse his pyrokinetic powers into the sword, creating massive flame dragons from the blade's tip. However, during his battle with Zoro, the katana was broken in two by Zoro's final attack.

Furthermore, King's suit is designed for hand-to-hand combat, featuring spikes that extend from his gloves and boots when he strikes with punches or kicks.

Fire Techniques

As a lunarian, King possesses the innate ability to create and control fire, earning him the epithet "the Conflagration." He can ignite any part of his body, allowing him to manipulate fire in his base form and Zoan forms. The flames on his back are closely connected to his exceptional resilience as a lunarian. When the flames are extinguished, King's defensive capabilities weaken, but his speed increases.

One Piece manga panel.

Using his fire manipulation, King enhances his melee attacks, infusing punches and kicks with flames to deliver burning strikes. He can also coat his sword in fire for added destructive power. From a distance, he can unleash a gatling of flame bullets, and his fiery abilities have the potential to set the battlefield ablaze.

Additionally, King can accumulate flames within his body, releasing them in a powerful explosion when struck by an enemy. This explosion can be devastating, and King's resilience allows him to endure it while leaving his opponents vulnerable.

At their peak, King's flames can resemble magma, and his most powerful fire technique involves channeling fire into his sword to create colossal, super-hot flame dragons that consume anything in their path.

With this fire manipulation, King has used these attacks so far:

  • Andon (Flame Emperor): King conjures a fireball in his palm and delivers a powerful punch engulfed in flames.

  • Karyudon (Fire Dragon Emperor): King ignites his sword's blade and creates a swirling, serpent-like dragon made of fire. He uses this attack to incinerate enemies.

  • Omori Karyudon (Assisting Guardian Fire Dragon Emperor): A more potent version of Karyudon, where King summons a larger fire dragon to attack and immolate his opponent. Its true potential was not fully seen as Zoro was able to slice it apart.

Devil Fruit

King consumed the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon, an Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit. This allows him to transform into a full pteranodon or a hybrid pteranodon form. In his transformed state, he is enveloped in flames and gains the ability to fly at incredibly high speeds. His pterosaur form enhances his physical abilities, including durability, and he can use his strong wings as a shield to defend against powerful attacks without harm.

King's beak is long, sturdy, and pointed, granting him immense piercing power. He can use it like a spear to effortlessly penetrate stone structures. In his Beast Form, King can retract his beak into his face and release it with tremendous force, breaking through bedrock and creating devastating attacks that are impossible to block.

Furthermore, King can wield his pteranodon wing-arms as blades. His wings are strong enough to clash with master swordsmen wielding Meito swords, and he can unleash powerful slashes that can slice through buildings.

King’s Relationships

Crew

Kaido

Over 30 years ago, King met Kaido when they were both captives on Punk Hazard. Kaido set King free and took him under his wing, eventually making him the first recruit of the Beasts Pirates. King became fiercely loyal to Kaido, believing him to be the man who will become the Pirate King. King even expressed his belief to Kaido that he might be the legendary figure "Joy Boy." Their loyalty and trust in each other are evident in their actions and conversations.

King enjoys Kaido's complete trust and willingly carries out missions on his behalf. He demonstrated his loyalty by attacking Big Mom's ship when she arrived at Wano Country and offering his sword to Kaido to behead Orochi. King's devotion to Kaido is further shown when he bluntly refused Big Mom's offer to join her crew, despite her willingness to forgive his past actions.

While King holds a high position in the Beasts Pirates, Kaido allowed the lower-ranked Tobiroppo the opportunity to challenge any All-Star for their position, highlighting the crew's hierarchy based on individual power.

When defeated by Zoro, King recalled his promise to never lose a battle until Kaido becomes the Pirate King.

Queen

King and Queen, the two All-Stars, have a rivalry and often exchange insults. Queen has referred to King as a "torture-loving pervert" due to his leather-clad appearance. King, in turn, gets annoyed by Queen's showy behavior, as depicted in the anime.

When Big Mom was brought to Onigashima, Queen blamed King for her presence since King had previously prevented the Big Mom Pirates from entering Wano. King sarcastically responded to Queen's frustration, implying that Queen had been useless from the beginning. During their fight on the Live Floor, King showed little concern for Queen's safety and even taunted him when Queen narrowly avoided being injured by King's attacks.

Despite King keeping his identity a secret, Queen is aware of his background as a lunarian survivor and recognizes his strength and resilience. Queen acknowledges that Zoro would have a difficult time defeating King.

Jack

King and Queen have a low opinion of their fellow All-Star, Jack. King scolds Jack for his lack of success in obtaining offerings from the Wano province he rules, even calling him "Foolish Jack." Despite this, Jack refers to King and Queen respectfully as "elder brothers" and accepts their verbal abuse without protest.

Tobiroppo

King has a strained relationship with the Tobiroppo, particularly Sasaki and Who's-Who. He is aware of their ambitions to become All-Stars and knows they would likely ignore any orders coming from him.

Still from the anime.

When they expressed their desires in front of King and Kaido, he dismissively told them to know their place. King is confident in his superiority over them and had no objections when Kaido proposed giving the Tobiroppo a chance to fight for the All-Star position.

In contrast, King sees the youngest members of the Tobiroppo, Ulti and Page One, as brats.

Enemies

Big Mom Pirates

As a rival of his Governor-General, King sees Big Mom as an enemy. He personally prevented her and her children from entering Wano by knocking their ship into the ocean as they tried to climb the waterfall. However, he was surprised to see that Big Mom survived and was brought to Onigashima by Queen.

Big Mom offered to forgive King's attempt on her life if he joined her crew, as she desired the presence of the unique and believed-to-be-extinct lunarian race in Totto Land. However, King bluntly refused her offer.

Big Mom's son, Charlotte Perospero, expressed his intention to seek revenge on King for his actions against his mother and crew.

Roronoa Zoro

During the war on Onigashima, King and Roronoa Zoro engaged in a fierce battle after Zoro's recovery from his previous fight against Kaido and Big Mom. They clashed with contrasting views on combat, with Zoro describing King as a "killing machine" due to his brutal fighting style combining swordplay and hand-to-hand combat.

The conflict escalated when King attempted to kill Zoro with his wing, which Zoro saw as disrespectful. This led to their mutual resentment.

Although King recognized Zoro's skill as a swordsman, he was unwilling to accept the possibility of being defeated by a mere human like Zoro, citing his own superiority as a lunarian. However, Zoro proved him wrong by overcoming King's fire dragon attack with his own finishing move, leaving King astonished.
