Sentomaru’s History

As a child, Sentomaru was a troublesome and hungry troublemaker who caused problems in his hometown. The townsfolk eventually banished him to the mountains, where he learned to survive on his own. Vegapunk and Borsalino once visited the town to address wild bear issues. They needed to investigate the bears on the mountain to build a weapon to drive them away.

During their investigation, they encountered Sentomaru, who had used Sumo techniques to defeat the wild bears but was hungry and weakened. Impressed by his strength, Vegapunk offered Sentomaru a job as his bodyguard.

As Sentomaru grew up, he eventually joined the Marines. At some point, Borsalino agreed to use his Devil Fruit powers for Vegapunk's research on a future project and entertained Sentomaru with these abilities.

Sabaody Archipelago Arc

On the Sabaody Archipelago, Sentomaru observed Devil Dias attempting to escape from his slavery under the World Nobles Rosward and Shalria. After Dias' unsuccessful escape, Sentomaru commented that surviving in the New World would be incredibly challenging for him.

When the Straw Hat Pirates caused a commotion by confronting the World Nobles, Admiral Kizaru was dispatched to the archipelago. Kizaru tried to contact Sentomaru upon arrival but had trouble with the Den Den Mushi communication. Worried that the Pacifistas might handle the pirates on their own, Sentomaru finally got in touch with Kizaru and informed him that the target pirates were Monkey D. Luffy, Eustass Kid, and Trafalgar Law.

After the Straw Hat Pirates defeated PX-4, Sentomaru showed up in Grove 12 with another Pacifista, PX-1. At first, he didn't reveal his identity but boasted about having the strongest defense in the world. Eventually, he introduced himself. Sentomaru ordered PX-1 to attack, leading to a confrontation with Luffy, Nico Robin, and Tony Tony Chopper.

As the fight began, Luffy attempted to attack Sentomaru, but Sentomaru used Busoshoku Haki to defend and counter, injuring Luffy despite his rubber body. Admiral Kizaru also arrived and attacked Roronoa Zoro, Usopp, and Brook. However, Silvers Rayleigh intervened and saved them.

Luffy instructed his crew to keep running, and Rayleigh prevented Kizaru from pursuing them. Sentomaru ordered PX-1 to deal with the injured Zoro and continued chasing Luffy. While in pursuit, Chopper transformed into his Monster Point and engaged Sentomaru, creating a distraction. This allowed Nico Robin to carry Luffy away.

When Bartholomew Kuma arrived and made Zoro disappear, Luffy demanded an explanation. Sentomaru, still dodging Chopper's attacks, clarified the rumors surrounding Kuma's mysterious powers and expressed confusion about Kuma sending PX-1 away and using his powers on the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates. Sentomaru sought answers to Kuma's actions.

Marineford Arc

During the Summit War at Marineford, about an hour and a half into the battle, Sentomaru arrived at the entrance to Marineford's bay with a group of Pacifistas. He questioned his orders, as the pirates were not all trapped in the bay as originally planned. However, Fleet Admiral Sengoku instructed him to target the pirates who were not in the bay first, even if it posed a risk to the Marine battleships.

Sentomaru was not surprised by Squard's attack on Whitebeard, as it had been part of Sengoku's strategy to make it appear as though Whitebeard was betraying his allies.

Later in the battle, Sentomaru was puzzled by Boa Hancock's destruction of some of the Pacifistas. She explained her actions by comparing love to a hurricane, leaving Sentomaru confused. When Shanks arrived at Marineford, Sentomaru and the Pacifistas he commanded stood down.

Return to Sabaody Arc

After confirming the return of the Straw Hat Pirates, Sentomaru, now an official member of the Marines, was eager to confront Luffy once again. He believed Luffy was on a different level compared to the rookie pirates who occasionally visited the Archipelago. Sentomaru mobilized Pacifistas PX-5 and PX-7, anticipating that Luffy had grown stronger during his two-year absence.

He also mentioned the mysterious actions initiated by Kuma two years prior, which suddenly ended without explanation, and suspected that the Straw Hats would return to the Archipelago eventually. Sentomaru and the Marines later arrived at Grove 46, surrounding the pirates and blocking their escape routes.

When he encountered the Luffy impostor, Demaro Black, he questioned why the impostor was claiming to be "Straw Hat Luffy." Unfazed by the impostor's threats, Sentomaru attacked him and ordered PX-5 to identify the impostor. Realizing that the pirates had been deceived, Sentomaru decided to arrest them for falling for the deception.

Upon learning of the real Luffy's presence, he ordered PX-5 to target him. Luffy dodged the attack but was exposed when his disguise was destroyed. Sentomaru once again ordered PX-5 to attack Luffy, but Luffy, now revealed to possess Busoshoku Haki, dodged the attack and defeated PX-5 with a powerful strike.

Sentomaru was shocked by Luffy's newfound ability. Luffy left the scene, ignoring Sentomaru's attempts to stop him. Zoro and Sanji subsequently arrived and easily defeated PX-7. The Straw Hat Pirates escaped to their ship with the help of Rayleigh, blocking the Marines' pursuit.

After capturing Demaro Black and many of his associates, Sentomaru reported the events on the Archipelago to his superiors. He warned them that the real Straw Hat Pirates had significantly grown in strength over the past two years and were now entering the New World.

One Piece: Stampede (Non-Canon)

When Sentomaru arrived on Delta Island, he ordered the Pacifistas to arrest all the pirates attending the Pirates Festival. He was initially annoyed when Dracule Mihawk appeared to assist the Marines but became depressed when Perona used her Negative Hollow ability on him.

Later, when Douglas Bullet used his powers to seal off the island, Sentomaru was startled. He contacted the outside for further orders on how to handle the situation.

Egghead Arc

When CP0 agents attacked Vegapunk's laboratory on Egghead, Sentomaru took command of the Seraphim units, which included S-Snake, S-Shark, S-Hawk, and S-Bear. Initially confused about Vegapunk's orders to confront CP0, he was reminded by Vegapunk of the favor he owed him from his childhood.

In response to the attack, Sentomaru ordered three of the Seraphim units, S-Shark, S-Hawk, and S-Bear, to engage and eliminate the CP0 agents. The remaining Seraphim unit, S-Snake, was tasked with escorting the Straw Hat Pirates to the Frontier Dome. Sentomaru later reunited with Luffy and spoke with him. However, CP0 decided to target Sentomaru to eliminate his control over the Seraphim units.

During the confrontation, Rob Lucci of CP0 used his hand to stab Sentomaru through the chest. Despite his injury, Sentomaru revealed that he had anticipated the attack to some extent. After Luffy defeated Lucci, Sentomaru urged Luffy to help Vegapunk escape from the island. He faced off against the remaining CP0 agents but eventually collapsed from his wound.

Some time later, despite being too injured to move, Sentomaru realized that the Marines considered him a rebel and were jamming his communications with Dr. Vegapunk. In a final effort, he activated all fifty Mark III Pacifista units stationed on Egghead and ordered them to assist Luffy and ensure Vegapunk's safe escape.

Sentomaru deployed the Pacifista units to protect Vegapunk on Egghead. When questioned about this decision, he explained that he was concerned about a situation similar to the Ohara incident unfolding on Egghead. He believed that the World Government's plan to kill Vegapunk, the smartest man in the world, could lead to dire consequences.

Stussy from CP0 informed Sentomaru that their mission was to eliminate Vegapunk and await Admiral Kizaru's arrival, emphasizing that Egghead was even more formidable than Ohara due to Vegapunk continuing Ohara's research. Sentomaru agreed that it was a valid reason to send a significant Marine force to Egghead. Stussy requested that Sentomaru contact her on a Den Den Mushi since the Labophase's communication systems were down, and after the call, Sentomaru ordered an evacuation due to the alarming situation.

While recovering from his injuries, Sentomaru engaged in a Den Den Mushi call with Admiral Kizaru. He instructed the Marine fleet outside to halt their attacks on the Sea Beast Weapons after observing one of them being destroyed by Kizaru's laser beam. During the conversation, Sentomaru pointed out the irony of Kizaru targeting Vegapunk, as Vegapunk's research, including the Pacifista lasers, was based on Kizaru's abilities.

Kizaru expressed regret for attacking Egghead, acknowledging that the island held significant value to the Marines. Sentomaru confirmed that CP0's mission had failed due to the involvement of the Straw Hat Pirates in the events on Egghead.

A bit later, Borsalino, sent by Jaygarcia Saturn, infiltrated the Labophase due to his Devil Fruit abilities being similar to the technology used for the laser defense. Borsalino specifically sought to confront Sentomaru, warning that he would activate the Pacifista defense and sink the entire Marine fleet if Sentomaru wasn't dealt with first. Borsalino quickly used his Devil Fruit powers to teleport to Egghead, a move that Sentomaru had anticipated.

Sentomaru activated the Pacifistas, ordering them to attack the Marine fleet. He prepared to face Borsalino in combat, and despite Kizaru's suggestion that he surrender, Sentomaru refused. He revealed that he sided with the Straw Hat Pirates to assist Vegapunk, who had saved his life in the past.

The battle between Sentomaru and Borsalino began, with Sentomaru struggling to land a hit on his opponent until he saw an opportunity. However, Borsalino simply shrugged off the attack and used a powerful laser beam to blast Sentomaru into the ground. After the intense battle, Sentomaru was left unconscious and severely injured.

Command of the 50 Mark III units was taken over by Kizaru. Later, during the chaos, Bonney was kicked off the Labophase by Kizaru and fell to the Fabriophase. Just before hitting the ground, Sentomaru, though barely conscious and severely wounded, managed to catch her, saving her life.

He urged Bonney to escape while she had the chance, as the Marines had initiated a ground invasion of Egghead. Bonney followed his advice and fled, while Sentomaru was later found by Marines, unconscious and bearing burn wounds.

Sentomaru’s Personality

Sentomaru claims to have the tightest defense, and he usually refuses to answer questions directly. However, he often shares information about himself or events without being prompted. He insists that he provides information willingly, not in response to questions.

He is very confident in his abilities and is willing to take on challenges, even confronting the Straw Hat Pirates with just one Pacifista by his side. Sentomaru remains calm in serious situations, such as when he encountered Chopper in his monster form.

Sentomaru appears perceptive, quickly noticing Luffy's use of Busoshoku Haki to enhance his attacks.

He is loyal to the Marines and takes his duty to capture pirates seriously. However, he also has a personal debt to Vegapunk and defended him against the World Government, particularly CP0.

Sentomaru shows respect for formidable opponents and disinterest in those who don't meet his expectations. He referred to Devil Dias as incapable of surviving in the New World and called the pirates who fell for the Fake Straw Hat Crew's deception "idiots" for being easily fooled.

Sentomaru’s Appearance

Sentomaru is a formidable and imposing figure. He has a sumo wrestler-like build, characterized by a stocky and robust physique. A prominent scar runs from his left eye to the left corner of his mouth, a result of a bear encounter.

His outfit consists of a unique shirt resembling a large brown bib or apron, adorned with a "heaven" emblem on the front. He also wears a traditional red and white rope or "tsuna" worn by yokozunas. Bandages wrap around his right fist and elbows, indicating his experience in intense battles. A kanji tattoo, meaning "battle," can be found on his left shoulder.

In terms of weaponry, Sentomaru carries an enormous two-edged axe, as tall as himself, emphasizing his combat abilities.

After the timeskip, Sentomaru's appearance changes slightly. He adds a Marine coat over his shoulders, signifying his affiliation with the Marines, and removes the arm bandages. The design on his coat shifts from light green to white, with the white tomoe design becoming thicker.

Sentomaru’s Abilities

Sentomaru is highly skilled and regarded as a world-class guard. He leads the Marine's Science Unit and possesses extensive knowledge in scientific fields.

He has direct authority over the Pacifista, being able to command them without the need for a control chip. Only the Five Elders, Dr. Vegapunk, and his satellites hold higher authority in this regard.

Sentomaru's combat style resembles Bartholomew Kuma's, involving sumo-like stances and open-palm strikes enhanced with Haki. This allows him to harm even Devil Fruit users with ease. Despite his size and build, he is surprisingly fast, outpacing Luffy's running speed. He also displayed resilience by remaining conscious after being stabbed by Lucci.

Sentomaru wields a massive executioner axe, which he uses against formidable opponents such as Chopper in his monster form and Kizaru. He used the broad side of the axe to flatten Demaro Black into the ground.

Sentomaru is skilled in Busoshoku Haki, which enhances his attacks and allows him to bypass the defenses of Devil Fruit users. He claims to have the "world's greatest defense." He can emit his armament Haki over a short distance without physical contact, a testament to his advanced Haki proficiency.

After the time skip, Lucci, in his Awakened Form, was able to pierce Sentomaru's Haki defense with his own Haki-imbued strike, showing its limitations.

He can use a powerful move called "Sumo Strike" (Ashigara Dokkoi), where he smashes his opponents with an open-palm strike infused with Haki, sending them flying and causing damage. Sentomaru can also use Kenbunshoku Haki.

Sentomaru’s Relationships

Kizaru

Sentomaru in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Sentomaru and Kizaru have known each other since Sentomaru was a child. Sentomaru asked Kizaru to train him and make him strong enough to protect Vegapunk, whom he was hired to guard. Sentomaru was also fascinated by Kizaru's abilities and enjoyed watching him demonstrate them for testing.

As adults, Sentomaru and Kizaru have good combat synergy, but Sentomaru often gets frustrated with Kizaru's lack of common sense and restraint during missions. He has to give Kizaru basic instructions frequently. Sentomaru affectionately refers to Kizaru as "Uncle," a term used to show high respect and not to indicate a family relationship.

During the timeskip, their friendship was strained when Kizaru was ordered to eliminate Vegapunk, and Sentomaru chose to protect Vegapunk instead. This led to a confrontation, with Sentomaru expecting to fight his old friend. Kizaru acknowledged Sentomaru's desire to fight him and respected it.

However, when they did face off, Kizaru defeated Sentomaru without mercy, even though it was regrettable due to their prior friendship.

Dr. Vegapunk

Vegapunk once saved a young Sentomaru and gave him a job as his bodyguard, which helped Sentomaru survive after being exiled from his village. This act of kindness created a strong bond between them, and Sentomaru feels a deep sense of debt and loyalty to Vegapunk.

He is willing to protect Vegapunk at any cost, even if it means going against the Marines and facing threats like Kizaru when Vegapunk's life is in danger.

Pacifista

Sentomaru in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Sentomaru has the ability to command Pacifistas, the powerful robotic soldiers created by Vegapunk. He is one of the few individuals they obey, similar to Bartholomew Kuma. This command over the Pacifistas is likely due to his position as a Captain in the Marine Science Unit, and he also possesses knowledge about their capabilities. Sentomaru can even identify individual Pacifista units by their serial numbers.

Pirates

Sentomaru in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Sentomaru claims that he doesn't really have a personal grudge against pirates, but he's willing to fight them as part of his duty as a Marine. He used to be Vegapunk's bodyguard and protected him from threats, including pirates. Sentomaru was concerned about the safety of rookies in the presence of pirates, even before officially becoming a Marine.

Following the timeskip, Sentomaru has become an official Marine, and his attitude hasn't changed much. He takes pride in arresting pirates and seems determined to do his job. He planned to capture pirates who had been tricked by a fake Straw Hat Crew, even though he thought they were foolish for falling for the deception.

Sentomaru has a certain level of respect for Monkey D. Luffy, having personally fought him. When Luffy easily defeated a Pacifista using Haki, Sentomaru recognized Luffy's strength. He tried to stop Luffy from leaving but couldn't, and later, he reported to his superiors that the real Straw Hat Pirates were a dangerous and formidable crew.

Despite his interactions with pirates, Sentomaru's primary concern is Vegapunk's safety, and he would take actions to protect Vegapunk from any threat, even if it means opposing the Marines or former friends.

Bartholomew Kuma

Sentomaru in One Piece.
Still from the anime.

Sentomaru and Bartholomew Kuma have an unclear relationship, but Sentomaru addresses Kuma in a sarcastic and insulting manner. Both may have a connection to Dr. Vegapunk's research facility.

Jewelry Bonney

Still from the anime.

Sentomaru is familiar with Jewelry Bonney, possibly due to her association with Kuma. He cared about her well-being and saved her from a dangerous fall. He also warned her about an incoming Marine invasion, showing concern for her safety, and Bonney seemed to be concerned about Sentomaru as well.

Did You Know?

  • Sentomaru's design is heavily based on the Japanese folklore hero Kintarō (also known as samurai Sakata no Kintoki), known for wearing just a bib, carrying a massive axe, and wrestling with bears. His attack, Ashigara Dokkoi, is a pun on Mt. Ashigara, where Kintarō was raised. However, his name, Sentomaru, is likely derived from another Japanese folklore hero, Momotarō.

  • Like Enel, Sentomaru is seen with the tomoe symbol, which appears on the "heaven" emblem on his outfit.

  • Sentomaru is the first character in the series to have his name written in kanji, rather than katakana or hiragana, and this characteristic is later shared with characters from Wano Country.

  • Sentomaru's favorite foods are onigiri and baked sweet potatoes.
